    Pros

Many positions are flexible allowing for work-life balance and opportunities to take courses for professional development; students are incredible to work with

    Cons

Lots of upper level and executive management changes in personnel and as such the direction and future of the institution seems unclear

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be transparent. Communicate. Don't lose sight of the organization mission. Students aren't consumers.

    Pros

My job allows me to structure my work that way I want to do it, as long as I get the job done. Managers are easy going. I feel like a valued member of the staff. Compensation and benefits are excellent.

    Cons

So far, I haven't found any cons to working for Portland Community College

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My manager is very pleasant, but doesn't do any active supervising. I appreciate autonomy, but I also appreciate more feedback and involvement from management.

People wouldn't work here for 20 years if it was bad...

    Pros

Because it's an educational institution employees have access to tuition waivers and such. There is a general encouragement and facilitation by management for staff learning and development. Backgrounds of coworkers are varied and often educated and interesting.

    Cons

There is a glass ceiling between the "Classified" side and the "AP/Faculty" side. A lot of the issues with any huge employer are there; A lot of internal bickering and strife, union disputes, funding issues, a feeling of getting lost in the machine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Even more encouragment for employee development.

    Recommends

    Pros

management is supportive, great benefits and pay, good place to work if you want to teach or help people, they encourage professional development; strong union- job security (it is almost impossible to get fired if you have been around for a while)

    Cons

It is hard to move up within the college if you do not have previous management experience, there are more opportunities for lateral moves; it is so big, sometimes it can get a bit bureaucratic - for example, it takes for ever to hire someone because of the lengthy HR process; because people do not get fired, some "long timers" are not as motivated as new hires are; it may be hard to get in - many staff work as part-time and temporary before getting full -time position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more opportunities for staff to move within the college, especially between general fund and grant funded positions

    Recommends

    Pros

slower pace, people friendly, plenty of interactions with people, especially with students. Can make a difference in the lives of students.

    Cons

    Not so dynamic, somewhat inefficient

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have to run it more efficiently so as to lower tuitions for students. It rises all the time.
