Praxair is a good place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Praxair

ProsDisciplined and ethical company that focuses on sustained growth. Is a good place to work for people that are looking to interface with many different industries.

ConsFlat organizational structure that makes rapid career advancement difficult. Career growth is steady and usually occurs through a combination of lateral and upward moves.

Excess of internal politics and concern about company"s image to the public

Director (Current Employee)
Tonawanda, NY

I have been working at Praxair full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFor fresh from school people fast promotion without achievements, just based on expectations. For senior employees just pension plan.

ConsCompany is lack of strategy. Senior managers and most of regions presidents do not have sales and business experience. They are selected based on internal politics.
There is no carreer plan. Company is worry about its image. Diversity program only works up to middle level like senior engineers. Going to higher level there is no diversity.
Company does not provide the same structure across the word in spite of goals are he same for all employees.
A lot of unskilled managers are causing potentail and skilled employees to look for opportunities outside.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote people based on skills and achievements, not base on expectations.
Do nt put diversity at the top when hiring.
Carreer plam must be managed by HR and not dump it on employees lap for them to take care of.

Overall a good company to work for. Good people at plant level and Management.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Praxair full-time for more than 5 years

ProsDecent pay, but slightly lower that surrounding Industry. People are great.

ConsTop Heavy in Management and Engineers. Not enough people at ground level to accomplish all that they expect. They promote Safety, yet there is only one safety guy that takes care of Multiple Locations. The paperwork is redundant and there is not enough time to really pay attention to the actual work that needs to get done. Took away our profit sharing and there are really no incentives, they say that we aught to be happy we have a job.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more people. Training. The LMS system is a good tool, but will never replace hands on training.
The Competition here in the South is very strong, we will continue to lose our experineced people to these other plants because of their reward system.

If you like workplace politics and cliques

Associate Director (Current Employee)
Danbury, CT

I have been working at Praxair full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood compensation and flexible time off
Benefits package is good, not the best but good
Cafeteria, on site laundry, barber etc are in the matrix building so the campus is self sustaining

ConsToo many cliques
Exclusionary behavior among upper management
Plenty of corporate politicking among management mid to upper
People will take credit for your work and hang you out to dry so you're constantly watching over your shoulder
Pretty much a buddy-buddy environment....and if you're not in the "in-crowd" you will have a hard time

Advice to Senior ManagementDismantle the exclusionary behavior among "directors" and the clique nature, it's permeating into other areas of the organization....including marketing, legal, tax, IT, etc....

Good company, solid business model, Old fashioned, not suitable for dashing creative people

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Praxair full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPraxair cannot afford to hire bright, innovative engineers from top notch schools and ivy league schools. Not even the good state schools. It can afford to hire engineers from community colleges and local universities who are available at 30% below market salaries. However, you always need employers who will employ B and C grade students. Where will they go otherwise? Praxair is a great company for such people and a ray of hope. Some of these people outshine and become successful leaders. However, company performance overall is governed by the quality and talent of people they hire. That's why overall its a mediocre company for mediocre people.

ConsNot very dynamic, Has very old technology in every field - email system is Lotus Notes - very old, No Web conferencing tools, Has plethora of old 1980 software for business functions, too slow to adapt to technology. Below market salaries.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage entrepreneurship among employees. Be dashing, promote risk taking. Get rid of senior manager with lame duck mentality, promote young aggressive employee friendly people, Pay above market salaries, hire top notch talent, keep them challenged and raise the bar for what they can deliver

Typical big corporate bureaucracy

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Praxair full-time

Pros- Good benefits package
- Kind workforce
- Good teamwork between disciplines
- Safety effort and awareness are top notch

Cons- Management is lacking drive, vision, and don't care much
- Raises are basically the same as inflation (~2-2.5%)
- The only way to get a healthy raise is through promotion which is rarely given to certain specific positions
