I have been working at Principal Financial Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company is very pro-women advancement, and is extremely conscientious to be open to all cultural, gender, and other backgrounds without bias. The work is very interesting and they are open to discussion and suggestions

    Cons

Some of the entry level positions are very numbers-driven and unrealistic on time demands. It can be very stressful to work here

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please leave room for quality along with demanding the quantity. If you look only the numbers of calls made or the number of calls/emails taken care of...the question is... were they really taken care of. Was the question really considered and addressed rather than just firing off a quick reply without understanding what that customer was asking? When the numbers are too high,I can guarantee that many of the responses were of a mediocre nature, and creating many problems down the line for our company.

I interviewed and was hired as a Investment Advisor Representative with this company. The process was smooth but long.

I have been working at Principal Financial Group as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

They are really concerned with that the applicant understands the difficulty of the road ahead.

    Cons

The testing phase is without pay. An applicant is required to cover the costs of the tests/prep, can be over $1000.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the management is doing a good job of informing and inspiring potential job applicants.

If you are a man you will fit right in and be treated like royalty. Women steer clear. I regret making this career move.

I have been working at Principal Financial Group full-time

    Pros

If you are a man the office manager will love you and let you work your own schedule, get special treatment, etc.

    Cons

Gender bias..men are wonderful, women..ehhhh, bullying by management. Senior management doesn't listen to employees at office level when they complain about a manager. Not following legal and ethical guidelines like they should. Doing whatever it takes to make the sale at all costs. Management thinks they are above the law for some reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Take complaints seriously and do something about it. Treat all employees fairly whether they are hourly, salary, male or female.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, good pay, very supportive of work/life balance, maintains a positive working environment, focused on employee safety, lives core values

    Cons

Technology efforts are typically focused on client experience. Would like to see more technology enhancements aimed at the internal employee experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure all senior leaders are focused on the greater good of the organization, not solely focused on what the see as good for just their business unit

I have been working at Principal Financial Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Principal is a great company located in a great location. You get the benefits of working in a fortune 500 company without the costs associated with working on the coasts or a huge metropolis.

Principal is big enough that you can move around to change careers but stay at the same company, but small enough that you can build close relationships.

    Cons

Like most financial services companies, the last 4 years have brought a lot of pressure to keep the bottom line in the black.

I have been working at Principal Financial Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The training program and resources are top notch. Very ethical. Management genuinely wants you to succeed.

    Cons

Working on a commission only basis is tough. The stress level can be high at times around the office. Some of the corporate training is not entirely necessary and you get the feeling that you are at times getting the short end of the compensation stick.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide the sales staff with preset leads or appointments. Take some of the money that is spent on training seminars and put that money into the sales staff marketing budget.
