I have been working at Protective Life

    Pros

Flexibility is great, if you have a busy life!

    Cons

Smaller company, limited growth. The only reason I left.

I have been working at Protective Life full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The training is great and the managers are willing to help if needed. Being off on weekends is nice, especially after working retail for many years. Company conducts contests to help keep morale up.

    Cons

Talking on the phone all day can be boring. Of course you get the occasional rude customer, but it's not too bad. The company wants you to be in the call center at least a year before requesting a transfer to another department.

Different levels of involvement for different interns

I have been working at Protective Life full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It's not stuffy like a bank. Sure there are folks that have to be in business professional attire for their particular words but for the most part it's business casual or less. Work-Life balance is great. Most weeks are 40-45 hours, which in this day in age is hard to come by. Pay is at the higher end, but not as high as others. It's in Birmingham, but not downtown. There's an onsite gym, with locker rooms and a nurse practitioner that works 4 days a week or so.

    Cons

Because it is so big sometimes things take longer to get done, or decisions to get made. Within the technology group the production control process is cumbersome, confusing and not efficient whatsoever. There's a lack of clarity in regards to professional development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Define clearer plans for future. Obviously some folks are happy where there at so figure out how to make them even better at their current role, but some want to progress and climb the corporate ladder so to speak. Give them a map and help them to get there.

I worked at Protective Life full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Protective has a family-friendly culture that supports its employees. The benefits and time off policies are competitive in the local market. During my time with the company, I experienced great career growth and also saw many of my peers grow their careers as well.

    Cons

Some projects and initiatives don't get off the ground due to analysis-paralysis. The company is a little too risk adverse sometimes. (They are an insurance company...)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While Protective does promote from within, there seems to be a limit. C-Suite placements mostly seem to be outside hires in recent years. Encourage all employees to achieve their best by looking for talent from within.

I have been working at Protective Life full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly work-life balance, prestigious company now being purchased by Dai-Ichi Life from Japan.

    Cons

Strong company financially may well be destroyed by outsider purchase who doesn't understand the work culture of Alabamians or Americans in general.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Reconsider this buy out.

I have been working at Protective Life full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits, and great corporate values. They have a true servants heart.

    Cons

Some times it can feel like communication up the chain is almost like a hassle to your boss. kinda feels like your issues are unimportant even though they are the ones that are managing the project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put in an open door policy so if someone has a quick question they feel a little more open to just stoping by and asking it real quick.

I worked at Protective Life full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There's a jogging trail nearby. And a nice gym downstairs.

    Cons

Co-workers were really catty. It felt like you weren't trusted to get your work done because there were actual monitors that kept track of any down time and if you were away from your computer for 15 minutes your manager would get an email notification.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everybody needs their own printer. The communal printer is a real bummer.

I worked at Protective Life full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice office, it has a gym and a cafeteria. My manager was good.

    Cons

They keep up with whether you are sitting at your desk or not through the movement of your computer mouse. It feels very big brotherish to know your manager will get an email informing them of the amount of time you were away from your desk.
