Former Employee - Staff Accountant in Birmingham, AL

I worked at Protective Life full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Employee focused and friendly atmosphere with personal training, access to upper management and mentors. Provide opportunities to individuals who show an aptitude and interest in a given area. Career planning advise and help available in an easy to follow path. Allow employees to leave work early every Friday (when I was there). Appreciate people with initiative awarding their hard work and are willing to truly consider new ideas to processes, etc.

    Cons

Not a lot of flexibility about work hours or leaving for a period when all work is complete even while on salary. When starting a new area with a new skill set the individual can sometimes feel left to their own devices and not be able to readily find help to proceed with task. Location access is just off of Hwy 280, which has intense rush hour traffic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is great that individuals are given the opportunity to work on new skill sets, therefore advancing their careers, but it would be good to make sure resources are readily available to assist them with the challenges experienced when working expanding their skill set.

    I worked at Protective Life

    Pros

Very old-school environment. There were lots of opportunities for advancement, but they were not doing a lot of hiring. Great company to work for.

    Cons

They had strict budgets that would not permit a lot of hiring, but it is understandable with the current economy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work! My manager always listeneed to my ideas, and made me feel very important. It was great.

I have been working at Protective Life

    Pros

Protective is a value driven company. They think and make decisions based on how those decisions will affect people. I cannot say how much I appreciate that in a corporate environment.

Protective is very interested in education and development. There are many opportunities to learn and grow within the company at no expense to the employee. Everything is paid for by the company.

The CEO does not hide in an ivory tower. He speaks directly (face to face) to his employees.

    Cons

Somewhat limited opportunities to advance. Even lateral moves don't seem to readily available. Too much planning. Too much time spent planning leaves no time left for actual working!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Carry on and forge ahead. Don't forget that doing the right thing for your people is also smart business. Don't focus on now, focus on 20 years from now.
