I have been working at Public Storage full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, love helping customers when they need it the most. Working at different locations and meeting new people.

    Cons

Taking away almost all benefits, low pay, selling high priced packing supplies if they need it or not. And SCRIPTS... Like the customer doesn't know it's a script, they hate it too. But it's all about the money, they even bragged at company party about the obscene amout of money they make DAILY...But only give 2% raises. They won't spend money on repairs like gutters, lets just take them down???

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not every state is like California, stop making blanket rules for every market...Does not work. AND better care of properties would be nice, no money is spent on the upkeep of buildings while prices are raised on the pretense of property maintenance.

Heartless Company. They are doing NOTHING to retain the good employees that ACTUALLY CARE about their stores.

I have been working at Public Storage full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It's a paycheck, and I have one of the best DMs out there.

    Cons

STOP with the Google reviews already! You can not continuously pimp out your lowest paid, least appreciated employees to improve your image.
STOP with the unattainable goals. The only people that are making bonus are upper management, not the people at the store level. The store level employees are the ones breaking their backs to put that money in your pockets. STOP with the inane scripts! Real people do not talk like this. I challenge any Regional or Divisional manager to work my store for a month, side by side with me. The CEO himself is welcome to the challenge. If you are so confident in those robotic scripts, then let me see how you make it work in a REAL store setting. I bet your numbers won't be any better than mine, and I work my butt off to get my numbers every month.
Stop with the ten cent raises. Property managers that are increasing revenue deserve better. It's a shame that the CEO makes more in one week than I do in an ENTIRE YEAR. You should be embarrassed that you have FULL TIME employees on public assistance because they can not live on the wages you pay.
STOP neglecting the properties. What happened to "Clean and Well Lit" ? My store has 2, yes TWO working lights on the whole lot. Clean is a JOKE! We are told to not move anything over 35lbs, yet Public Storage won't pay to have vendors pick up abandoned goods. We have to move these things ourselves to the dumpsters, but if we get hurt in the process, we are written up. Do you see the insanity here?
I'm tired of having to LIE to my customers every day. Constantly making excuses. Telling them that their roof leak will be repaired ASAP. Forcing them to pay $21 for a lock made in CHINA! Coercing them into buying the insurance.
STOP with unnecessary upper management positions. Senior DM, Regional, Assistant Regional etc. You need more store level employees not more made up upper management employees. My Regional is a clueless joke and I know more than a few on site managers that DID NOT appreciate him coming out to do the apartment inspections alone.
STOP taking away everything from the store level employees, PTO, vacation time, benefits.
STOP sending out shoppers during the busiest times of the month. Seriously, I do not have time for that nonsense. Look at my numbers. My numbers tell you that I AM doing my job correctly.
STOP raising the rent on long time tenants. They deserve a break! Some have been there 5, 10, 15 years, some even longer. I have seen too many LONG TIME tenants leave because of rate increases.
    STOP the micro managing.
STOP treating store level employees like second class citizens. We are the ones putting millions in YOUR pockets. It's time to share the wealth.
STOP making store level employees work alone everyday. It's unsafe and unproductive. There is more than enough work to do everyday for two people. The hours are posted on the front door. There should be someone in that office at all times. How many customers are YOU losing when I am out of the store cleaning spaces, picking up trash, doing property checks, helping a tenant that again can not open their door, on lunch, going to the bank for the 5th time? Do you see other retailers closing down during posted hours of operation? What if Target closed down when everyone went to lunch? Again, do you see the insanity here? You want to make money, yes? Then why are you CONSTANTLY locking the doors during store hours?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees like they make a difference and they will. The challenge is out there. Work my store side by side with me for a month. You sit there in your suits everyday trying to come up with more ways to make my life miserable. Come sit next to me and see how miserable it is and then we'll go outside and move that filthy, infested mattress to the dumpster.

I worked at Public Storage full-time

    Pros

As a relief manager, I travel around a lot. Was offered a PM job several times but declined because I like going to different properties. At first I liked it. I was able to get the numbers but as time went on I realized this company is very unethical..

    Cons

Where do I even start?! Let's start with the buildings I guess. Horrible. Constantly leaking, nothing ever gets fixed, I had to always lie to customers and tell them "oh it'll get fixed soon" and send out an email to the DM who would never reply anyway. I was forced into selling locks and insurance, which everyone agrees is uncomfortable and I always get customers who always denied/argued about it. Google reviews.. If I hear those words one more time I'll lose it. The rent raises so much, how is that even morally okay?! And guess who gets to deal with it? Us. The managers. While upper management sits on their butts in their comfy chairs, I get things thrown at me, threatened and verbally abused by entitled customers. Even if they're loyal and always pay on time, corporate won't lower their rate and just tells them to "move units". Ohhhh and the cameras don't even work! None of the properties I've ever worked at has working cameras. It's sad, really. There's black mold in some of the offices and it makes me sick. No one cleans it even though I've reported it many times. It's in the AC unit as well which blows on me all day.
    It's a good temporary job I suppose.

    Pros

Money, however little you actually see...

    Cons

Same low life delinquent clients to deal with every month, always cussing at you and fighting with you about having to pay their bill. Being forced by the company to push worthless storage insurance which half the time will not pay out to the customers for legit claims. Low pay. And quite literally no way to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reform this company from the ground up.

I have been working at Public Storage

    Pros

Great profits for shareholders knows how to get big dollars in sales from non commissioned sales people. Very profitable company

    Cons

Dm role is 5 different jobs at least no support from leaders or field support. The facilities support is not available. There is no work life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to break down the country into geographic regions company is to large to have everything done from Glendale ,CA if each division had its own support team.there would be increased efficient process reduction in time to respond.Instead they have the DM'S do all of it and get to spend no time doing sales coaching. If there was field support teams sales would increase dramatically. As it is set up now DM never get caught up even when. Organizing to the max. Change/ force old regional/ long-term regional to understand there is new ways to do things and coach people. That employees in the front lines are people and you should know who your people are by name it is what being a leader is about. You should not act fake or like you are better than them.

I worked at Public Storage full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable work hours, if your manager does not call you at home to "prepare" you for upper management upcoming visit.

    Cons

Public Storage is unethical from the top of the structure, this trickles down and creates a hostile environment. The only value in this business structure is profit. Stakeholders are given no consideration in the decision process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Educate yourselves in business ethics, everyone including those at the top. This will improve employee retention, customer satisfaction and prove to better your reputation.

I worked at Public Storage (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The job itself is easy. Some of the customers are fantastic people.

    Cons

Name it. Everything is wrong with this company. I was there for 4 years. When I started with the company I received a monthly bonus. Then it was a quarterly bonus. Then they changed it to a yearly bonus that was impossible to get. I made less money every year I worked there. We didn't even get a cost of living raise in 2013. We were driven like donkeys to meet upper managements goals so they would bonus. Management was constantly in our faces about Google reviews. People were writing fake reviews to get them off their backs which was grounds for termination. Management had non customers write reviews so they would bonus. Nothing got fixed. Security cameras were out and wouldn't be fixed. The gate would allow anyone to enter using any number at any time. They wouldn't fix it. I had to lie to customers about everything. We were forced to harass non paying customers with repeated phone calls. There was a gas leak from one of the heaters, They wouldn't call for repair service. There was black mold in the office and utility closet that was making me sick. I was told to purchase bleach with my own money (we were not allowed to order it),and scrub it off the wall. I was told to never mention it again. We were forced to falsify the monthly checklist (grounds for termination) only to have the auditor call us out on it. This company doesn't care about employees or customers. It's all about upper management making their bonuses. Bonuses most of them do not deserve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do your job. Answer your phone. Stop telling employees to keep cell phones out of the office then tell them to text you. You need to appreciate your employees for lining your pockets with bonus money you didn't earn. Stop making your employees break company policy so you can bonus. Give employees raises and give them a chance to bonus again. PS is the highest grossing storage company in the world and pays their lower level employees the least. Shame on you!

I have been working at Public Storage

    Pros

Decent hours, nice DM's, and some pretty cool customers. The company itself aims to please employees, but that is sadly overridden by the cons.

    Cons

Where do I begin. I have been around this company for many years. Starting out, it was a great place to work. This company, about 6 years ago or so, truly cared for its employees and customers. The rapid decline began about 3 years ago or so. Here is what is wrong with this company. Your Regional Managers are DESTROYING this company. They FORCE property managers and relief managers to break company policy constantly. I do not think corporate has any idea what is going on, and if they do.. shut it down... just shut it down and hire robots before you continue to employ actual humans who can see straight through the BS we are shoved every single day. We are told to DO GOOGLE MAPS reviews IN OFFICE and type it on the customers phone. That is not only against google policy, but against policy for the company as well. We are forced TO PACKAGE lock insurance and merch merch merch... DM's are ADVISING PM's TO ADD IN MERCH WITHOUT CUSTOMER EVEN KNOWING!!! Do you know why corporate? Well to tell you, it is THEIR BONUS. They will do things the wrong way, break company policy LEFT AND RIGHT, and they take it out on us. We are ALL scared to say anything. And that is just scratching the surface. They wont fix anything, because their maintenance is a BONUS metric. We are told to TELL CUSTOMERS to bring flashlights to their units because the lighting is not a priority. I can go on and on and on.. .but IM telling you this is TERRIBLE.... You have many LONG TERM employees who are jetting because they are being treated terribly. All it is about is regional manager and DM bonus, they DO NOT CARE About pm's or reliefs.... Anyone who refers to the rules set by corporate is told that those are just guidelines and that they can do what they want. Let that sink in....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to really check out your Regionals and see the true fear they are instillling if they do not get their bonus checks. They are running everyone off, especially the hard working ones. Get rid of the Favorites game bonus, and start appreciating people who work hard, not just kiss butt and look good on paper. Oh and PROMOTE from within!!!!

I worked at Public Storage full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Daytime work schedule, completely independent work environment.

    Cons

Unscrupulous business tactics, tenants units broken into daily, rigid scripts, low pay, schedule varies drastically, co-workers are catty backstabbers, no appreciation whatsoever. No security measures to protect employees, the office I worked in had bullet holes in the wall behind my head and I frequently had isolated encounters showing units to drug addicts and gang members who where off the hook.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    A complete ethics overhaul.
