I have been working at Publix full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Training always available, culture is prevalent, updated management pay is quite nice, the theory of how the company is supposed to work is enjoyable...

    Cons

...however, the "good ol' boy" idea of promotion and promoting based on how much one is liked is ridiculous. If a store is failing, look at the management...don't promote a manager within that store, if their department is falling apart.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those that have been around for a while and know what they're talking about. Be willing to listen and actually do something about it, not just pretend you care.

I have been working at Publix part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule. Good Management. Great benefits for a retailer, with an expanding market.

    Cons

Unfortunately with the size of the company individuals are less important. There is always people ready to take your job so your personal needs are not usually weighed in. They are slowly cutting associate benefits especially to part timers while also cutting full time positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember were you started and how Publix became successful in providing customer service by treating their employees right.

I have been working at Publix

    Pros

Very supportive. They look out for their associates and managers. Most individuals that are not satisfied with Publix are actually only rating an individual manager or store. The great thing is that as an associate you can pretty much go wherever you want in the company. Our VP was a bagger when he started.

    Cons

They tend to micromanage and they have become like every big corporation fixated on the payroll portion of profits. The expectations over the years has changed, not necessarily for the better or the worse.....its just changed. Still a great company just hope they don't lose sight of our founders vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to the basic functions of a store. All the high tech IT stuff doesn't put product on the shelves or prepare us for expansion, People do that. Payrolls should have fat in this industry so as to train and promote associates. This is the only way to keep a culture alive while expanding into new and existing markets. Trimming all the fat leaves us starving for people to do the tasks we need done.

I have been working at Publix full-time

    Pros

Overall benefit package is good, retirement and stock purchase plans are incredible. Salary is middle-of-the road. Including quarterly inventory bonuses makes the overall compensation average. Schedule has you working five 12 hours weekdays, 17 weekend hours, and a 3 hour overlap shift in a 2 week rotation, for a total of 80 hours every 2 weeks (on-site only 7 out of 14 days).

    Cons

Tech help is not adequate for Rx volume. Expectations for non-prescription related responsibilities is substantial, making it difficult on most days to fill prescriptions while customers do their shopping. 25% of inventory bonus now withheld each quarter and put into a bonus pool, which you can earn back based on your success in completing above-mention non-prescription related responsibilities. When you are unable to complete these responsibilities during work days, you are expected to "take it out of your overlap". End result is 45-50 hour work weeks to attempt to accomplish all tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In your attempts to attract new patients in order to grow business, don't sacrifice the exceptional customer service (i.e., timely prescription filling) that made you successful in the first place. Getting their prescriptions filled quickly and correctly, and being able to talk with the pharmacist are what customers still want the most.

I worked at Publix full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Amazing company with overall great treatment of employees. Lots of potential for promotion from within.

    Cons

Most locations have one pharmacist covering twelve hour shift. Not able to leave for meal break and restrooms are generally at opposite end of store. Support staffing based on Rx volume, so if you have a slow Rx department, there is zero support staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have at least one support person, preferably a tech, even part time, say six hours per day to lessen insanity

    I worked at Publix part-time

    Pros

They worked well with my schedule, since I was going to college at the time.

    Cons

Any time I asked to learn more so that I could better myself in my department, I was told that I would be given the opportunity to do so. However, something always seemed to come up and was never given any time to learn more.
