    Pros

    PWC tends to get high-profile contracts, which can be exciting for a technical developer.

    I worked for a year as a full-time consultant for a website development contract with a federal agency. We were asked to build a fairly simple and small public-facing content website -- a project we could have hit out of the park in three months. Instead, we weighed it down with incredible amounts of useless bureaucratic time-wasting that added nothing at all to the quality of the product. Website development is not a field that benefits from an atmosphere of intense regulation and corporate conformity. We ended up spending a full year on a project that was not very difficult, employing a team of nearly 10 people when we needed maybe 3. As the tech lead, I had a full-time manager whose only job was to observe my work, though I would have been perfectly capable of delivering on the schedule without a full-time manager. Even more ridiculously, my manager had a full-time manager whose only job was observing him!!! Then, every couple of months or so, they would bring in a "quality team" from some other section of PWC whose only job was to observe all of us. Why didn't they just leave us alone and let us build a website? In the end, all this recursive bureaucracy achieved was to establish a mood of dull conformity and corporate dread, which is the PWC lifestyle in a nutshell.

    Advice to Management

    Website development is not the business PWC should be in. Website developers tend to have some "joie de vivre", which is apparently illegal at PWC.

    Pros

    Exit opportunities, free CPA exam, free dinners. Not much in the grand scheme of things. For some reason, other employers value this place's employees, so you can capitalize on that good will. Leave as soon as possible.

    Cons

    Work life balance is horrible. You will never see friends or family. Busy season does not ever end - there is always more to do. It's bad all year.

    Seniors wait until late in the day to give you work, ensuring you share in their misery into the wee hours.

    The experience looks good on paper but being staffed on mega-engagements doing very specific tasks leaves you with just a vague understanding of how specific software /work papers work, without any big picture context. You won't learn much unless you commit years of your life to the job, and doing so is social and familial suicide. You will find that after leaving you will have learned almost nothing useful.

    My seniors were socially incompetent, cliquey, terrible at teaching and generally unhelpful - with a couple exceptions. They did not welcome new staff and were condescending and rude.

    The healthcare benefits are terrible, especially if you have dependents. My wife and son qualified for state subsidized care, because UHC's coverage was so awful.

    The pay is low. You can easily make just as much in an entry level staff accountant or internal auditor role at a private company.

    The flexibility promised by the recruiters and partners is a lie. Simply do not believe any of it. Their "flexibility" = being available via laptop 24/7 with no ability to get away from work.

    Pros

    Every year that you work here (as with other public accounting firms) as worth 3-5 years of work in the private sector. For example my client has an accounting manager that has been internally promoted. It took her 25 years to reach her current position. Her bosses boss, the controller, worked in public accounting for 8 years and makes ~$40k more a year.

    Cons

    You will not have a life. Even weeks that are not busy season are 55-60 hour work weeks. If you aren't on a client then you will probably be traveling to do an inventory observation. Don't get too excited about that, because there's only so much you can do in Yuma, AZ, Monte Vista, CO, or Burley, ID on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Also, even if one of those days is a travel day, you will be expected to work on the plane in order to make "efficient use of your time" and not fall behind.

    Pros

    Plenty of employee and networking functions. You can make some great contacts while working there. Big 4 looks great on the resume

    Cons

    Very clickish culture. You need a sponsor, don't get placed by a recruiter. True burn them and churn amotsphere.

    Pros

    The firm is closed during the holidays in December, so they are serious about staff taking time off.
    The firm encourages staff to pursue training and other certifications.
    The Onboarding experience for New Hires is excellent.

    Cons

    PwC Federal practice leadership, especially Directors are mediocre.
    "Hours over standard" which are the additional hours staff bills after 40+ client hours, are factored into annual performance ratings, and translates into basically "free work" for the company.

    Advice to Management

    Consider adding a "Senior Manager" level, like the other "Big Four" Consulting firms do. Most of the Directors in the Federal Practice are currently performing at the "Senior Manager level, and those who bring in no additional work into the practice are not held accountable. I observed alot of favoritism, especially to mothers with children. They were not looked down upon if they had to leave the office early to pick up their kids.

    Pros

    While employed at PwC opportunities were endless. Many different roles to choose from. Most employees were hard working and knowledgeable.

    Cons

    Advancement seemed to be based on relationships, not merit, seems to political where politics has no place to be. Those that worked hard often rubbed management the wrong way even though suggestions given were for the better. No consistency throughout the firm

    Advice to Management

    Consistence is the key to success, Without consistent decision making, structure falls apart. Don't fall victim to trends, stand ground and do what is best for the whole, not the one. Listen and act to those ideas, even if they come from the most unlikely source.

    Advice to Management

    Some managers, partners and directors want to be treated like royalty so you should let them step on you whenever they please. This has got to be the most toxic work environment I have ever worked in the last 20 years. The rat race to climb the corporate ladder is purvasive among teams. I am working 70 hour weeks while some of the favorites are always attending "training" seminars. Why hire or retain them if they cannot perform? The unfair workload and domineering managers are the main reason I'm resigning. In my dept I was the only male employee.

    Pros

    -The employees are so nice and helpful
    -Exposure to corporate lifestyle
    -Free coffee and hot chocolate
    -looks good on resume

    Cons

    Well, where to begin?

    -You are an administrative assistant not a true accountant, TL are equivalent to office managers

    -First thing I notice was the division. I was so blindsided by the lack of integration when I first started training. When you are a contractor, it is pretty clear that you are an outsider until you have the ever so slight chance of converting to full time. As a contractor, you are "loaned" laptops, and PwC makes it clear that you cannot take them home like the staff. This is a disadvantage during training because all training material is only available through their intranet system (IBM/Lotus Notes).

    -Training is only 8 days long before you go to the floor and the Sr. Manager expects you to know EVERYTHING.

    -Training is lacking. There are about 10 stages for confirmations (sending/receiving) and about 5-10 processes withing each stage. You may have a request that only has one stage or all 10. You may 7-15 requests at a given time, so organization is CRITICAL or you will fail.

    -Training did not stress the use of WBS charge codes, which is essential to time management. They did not stress that EVERY minute counts. If you are checking an email for a client for just 3minutes, you need to charge that time to that client. 3 minutes do not seem like a lot but when you are checking 20-30 emails in between working on requests. Like taxes, there is a worksheet for that,at PwC, there is a code for that.

    -Do not ask a lot questions. Forget what they tell you in training, it is not okay to ask questions. Use CMS and pray that you got it right.

    -Feedback is another way to cover their tail so when they coach you, they can say, "Well, I give you real time feedback". That way they can defend themselves when they fire you or when you are a contractor end your assignment.

    -Your TL/ETL determines your success. You may get lucky and get an awesome TL/ETL or you can be screwed with being stuck with a horrible TL/ETL due to set teams and groups.

    -Contractors are not guaranteed 40 hours, only staff. Which means your TL(direct supervisor can send you home by the early afternoon).

    -Contractors are not given exciting request with big name clients, only the PwC employees (because as you are reminded like every day, you are not an employee. They even make you watch an eLearn about it).

    -Very compartmentalized. A Tax associate/specialist hardly ever sees a full return completed through. I probably have completed more corporate tax returns at HRB. External confirmation specialists are glorified assistants for the Engagement Team.

    -You can't tell the engagement team that they are wrong. If they send a dis-organized spreadsheet or forget to fill out necessary information; plan on wasting your day pulling teeth to gather info and fixing their mistakes with a smile.

    -Transitioning work after being fired/or for contractors having your assignment end. This is just more insult to injury, it's like, fire me and then have me train the person on my requests on my way out.

    -Contractors were not invited to any holiday parties. In fact, PwC were sneaky about it. They made sure they sent emails to ONLY CORE and staff employees. As hush money, they gave contractors two free tickets to AMC instead. From the start you are pretty much made an outsider.

    -No laptops, no laptop bags, nothing that helps you do the basics of your job were given to contractors.

    -They cut contractors first but will cut the fixed term staff or core if absolutely necessary.

    -Your TL/ETL can and will betray your trust during coachings. Just keep in mind that as a seasonal/fixed term employee, you are up for being cut first then your superior. They are always watching your performance.

    -No work/life balance. I do not consider sitting in front my PC with my lunch working on a request to be a work/life balance. I almost missed a company cruise that I told from the very beginning of starting my job that this even was paid for in advance and could not miss. I was supposed to work half a day and ended being there almost the entire time. That point showed me their true colors and that family life is second to what the client wants.

    Advice to Management

    -Train your employees fairly so that everyone, Staff, CORE, and Contractors have the same opportunity to succeed.
    -If your training is poor, do not throw your subordinates under the bus to save your own butt.
    -If there is no difference between Contractors and PwC employees, just give everyone a laptop to take home or do not do it at all. It creates an environment of nepotism.
    -Office politics only hurts the company brand. It only takes a few rotten apples to ruin the batch.
    -Don't have your TL or ETL do your dirty work.
    -Be honest about what the feedbacks are for.
    -Most importantly,set CLEAR expectations of the employees.

    What is expected of how fast you are expected to work is not defined from the beginning. Define and be clear in what you want and how you want it done.

    Pros

    good learning experience
    some quality people
    may provide a competitive salary
    has seversal offices across the country so relocation is easy

    Cons

    my personal experience as an international women working in US was not great
    - got several project performance awards but that wasn't enough to get promoted
    - if you are perceived to be popular among your peers, it ends up being single biggest criteria for being promoted
    - this firm does not value your past experience
    - Firm does not value diversity and will take no action even when you openly call out extremely racist coworkers

    Advice to Management

    value women workers, promote them if you see established project performance, take all employee complains seriously

    Pros

    Putting PwC on your resume will be your ticket out, as you will get many phone calls when applying to other, much better job opportunities; although I’m not sure why this company still holds such a positive image to the outside world.

    Cons

    They want you to work like a robot. Zero mistakes are expected. Bathroom breaks must be under 2 minutes. NO talking to co-workers, even if it’s work related. You get yelled at from every angle, even if it is something that couldn’t be avoided (i.e. you are given useless systems and zero guidance). Leadership has no idea what is going on, they sit in an office and talk to each other all day. They won’t even smile or say hello to you. They do not care about your well-being, only that you take 50 calls per day and get off of the phone in under 7 minutes when again, they give you systems that literally make this goal impossible. Not worth the money or the benefits, because there are plenty of much, much better companies to work for out there.

    Advice to Management

    Try doing the call center job for one day, and then you might figure out why you have such high turnover.
