I have been working at Quiksilver full-time

    Pros

Characteristically California surfer style and aesthetic, close proximity to the Huntington Beach surf, 50% discount on merchandise, paid holiday vacation, and casual dress (flip-flops and board shorts) worn in the office.

    Cons

Very low company moral as a result of poor management, high turnover, layoffs, restructuring at top level (2 CEO's in one year is the strongest indication, and little to no support from Human Resources. The social climate is toxic for those who don't follow the status quo and it seems to be an extension of college fraternity/sorority life for the majority. Only the "cool kids" survive! Additionally, employees and managers can be found inebriated from a night of partying the day after. Lateral movement often occurs for those who can crush beers with upper management but are not fully qualified or ready for more responsibility. There isn't a clear line in the sand which allows for sexual harassment, office bullying, HR violations committed by management, and poor work ethic (employees can be found watching YouTube or leaving the workplace for extended amounts of time). Overall, there is zero confidentiality, accountability, and professionality. With layoffs, smaller teams have to absorb more work with no pay raise & overtime is not an option.

    Advice to Management

Most management shouldn't be in management. It's similar to teachers with tenure, poor management are given a sense of permanence which perpetuates the decline. I would advise intensive management training and a reevaluation of who is hired. The Human Resources team needs to be restructured as well. They do not serve as a resource but more as enablers of deplorable behavior.

    I worked at Quiksilver full-time

    Pros

The only Pro is the Employee discount. Standard benefits for health and vacation. No 401K match.

    Cons

Poor management, favortism from management to the max (for a certain department I know), big turnovers (7 people quit in 8 months in one department I know), too many layers of managers; company needs to let go couple worthless VPs (a manager or a supervisor could do the work of this particular VP I know). Company's debt is phenomenal; thus, it needs to cut cost by eliminating some of these high positions with not so much talent.

    Advice to Management

Company is too busy to stay afloat. But HR needs to spend time to understand why the turnovers are so high for one department.

    Pros

Medical benefits and the employee discount.

    Cons

There is NO room for upward advancement. And even if there was an open position they'd promote someone by default because there wasn't anyone else. Yes there is, hire outside people who are qualified. Management is too lazy to take the time to search for quality people and train them. They can be sometimes difficult to work with and not flexible at all. Turnover was so high because they pay their associates crap but managers get bonuses and $6k raises while the front line gets $.25, if that. They talk a big deal about treating you like family but when it comes down to it, it's every man for themselves.

    Advice to Management

If they respected their staff they'd get some respect too. You've talked a good talk to get naive fresh out-of-high schoolers to drink the Kool-aid but what are you going to do to keep hard-working, qualified workers?

    Pros

When there are creative people in the right posts your work can be rewarding. There was about 9 months in which I had a positive outlook.

    Cons

Co-workers constantly complain about workload and processes. The "old guard" holds on to the past by doing things inefficiently and are resistant to change or different point of views.

    Advice to Management

Holding on to the same work force certainly appears to be the right thing but you must continue to train people. Keeping mediocre talent does not help you grow and diversify the product.

I worked at Quiksilver full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Both buildings on corporate campus are very nice and museum-like, have great food, and a great office gym (only one gym). Workloads are never overwhelming for anyone who isn't an executive. Most people leave right at 5:30 and doing so isn't really shunned upon. The company is not ran "lean"... there is basically an employee for every facet of the business (at least when I was last there)... This lifts heavy responsibility from any one team member. In retrospect, I was a lot more relaxed and had a great work-life balance while at Quik.

    Cons

Compensation. Ability to move up and attain deserved raises. The budget for salary/raises is extremely tight... Quik has been negative on their bottom line for a number of years now. Only employees who "have gone above and beyond the expected progress" get a raise... And the raises are VERY small- about half of the national average of % raise increases. Do yourself a favor and don't go to Quik unless you desperately want to work in the action sports industry and/or you're looking for a "chill" job where you don't want to push your limit. But, There have been so many layoffs in the last year, looks like they've finally got the picture and trying to eliminate excess positions... I was lucky to get out when I did.

    Advice to Management

You shouldn't have allowed Slater to leave.

I worked at Quiksilver full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Very casual, laid back atmosphere.

    Cons

Management are recruited on whether or not they surf (or if they know the owner through surfing) not whether or not they are qualified for a specific position. Probably why they have a takeover group in now trying to turn things around

    Advice to Management

Hire QUALIFIED people with experience in their particular areas (whether or not they surf). Get rid of the "Bro Club"!!

    Pros

used to be a cool place to work, casual dress

    Cons

this place is a corporate nightmare, top execs overpaid, upper middle is uber political...and they just keep laying off more and more..

    Advice to Management

sell now before the bottom falls out.
