Laid back and amiable culture make up for work as an intern.

I worked at Quiksilver as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I was an intern at Quiksilver this past spring left the position with an overall average experience. The surf apparel industry is an awesome place to work. The people are genuine, nice, and above all willing to help you in anyway they can.

They understand that as an unpaid intern, you need all the compensation you can get. So, you're able to get your paws on free samples and can take advantage of the employee discount at the campus store. All in all, I enjoyed my time there; but, I do believe that there is a LOT of improvement that should be acted on.

    Cons

All that being said, I feel there needs to be some serious restructuring to the internship program at Quiksilver. As an college intern, you expect to gain experience that prepares you for a post-graduate career. During my time at Quiksilver, I found myself being assigned to grunt work that full-time workers either did not have time to do or had no desire to do them. Don't get me wrong, every position has aggravating duties. However, I feel that interns would greatly benefit to seeing how their work impacts the workflow as the business as a whole.

Luckily, I did have the opportunity to shadow the quarterly company-wide meeting where I got to learn about the company. Other than that opportunity, I did not feel that I learned much professional experience which was very disappointing.

    Pros

The discount was great The special events were fun. The café was convenient when you were too busy to leave.

    Cons

Lot's of cliques. You would think a surf company would have a kick back attitude. It was quite the opposite. Lot's of politics. There were tons of lay offs so no one felt secure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to stop having favorites and learn to bring out the best in each person. That's a true manager.

    Pros

Casual/fun work environment. Good discount on the clothes. Lots of paid holidays. Good work/life balance, in my department at least.

    Cons

No room for career advancement. Layoffs and restructuring very common now, so morale is low. Some departments seemed to get more perks than others. Communication between departments is lacking. Changes are made by upper management poorly implemented.
