A lot of traing for little compensation

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at RadioShack

ProsThe training is extensive. You'll know every last thing there is to know about cellular service and most of the big companies out there pushing it. Theres also a lot of training on the classic items you know radioshack to sell including but not limited to diy items, batteries, computers and accessories and coaxial cables.

ConsI would say the biggest con is a low salary for a lot of knowledge. The customers usually come in for something specific that they either know about or dont know about and either way YOU need to know what it is.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone at this time.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Pulled too hard in too many directions.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at RadioShack full-time for more than a year

ProsTop-selling employees have the opportunity to earn the equivalent of anywhere from $0.50 to $3/hour in commissions. Good cohesion between associates. Good pay structure (when they leave one in place for more than 3 months)

ConsDisconnect between upper- and lower-level management. Too much is asked of many store managers by their District Managers (DMs) and Regional Sales Directors (RSDs), whether intentionally or not. This trickles down to the lowest level.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt seems like there are some good heads at corporate and in management. But from the highest level of the chain that I've ever seen to the lowest, it seems as though everyone is asking too much of his/her direct subordinates, mostly because his/her boss is asking too much of him/her. Every sale, I have to remember to mention/offer ten different things. It is tiring to me and the customer, and no matter how you slice it, when you try to sell the same person four different things within 30 seconds, you come off as greedy. Let's get back to service before sales. Take RadioShack BACK to the 80's (at least in mindset) and BACK to being there or the hobbyist and the average Joe, and not trying to turn everyone into a DIYer or a latest-mobile-phone-haver.

A shift in culture - both socially and personally.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at RadioShack part-time for more than a year

ProsThe field of technology is an ever-changing one, especially at this point in our society. New technologies are being created and developed making for a fast-paced environment that allows you to continue your education throughout your time there.

ConsManagers work long hours. The pay is lacking. The job is extensive, however rewarding, come with experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf your goal is to attract quality employees and salespeople, make it worth the while. Either increase the commission that employees slave for or raise the base rate so the employees at least have the option to afford the semi-intriguing electronics they are made to shamelessly sling.

High pressure barely honest sales & custodial work, for barely better than minimum wage!

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Montebello, CA

I worked at RadioShack full-time for more than 5 years

ProsMade several friends from a diverse range of people. Comfortable indoor work environment. Great when place when the managers above you are good people. Very social and provides a good feeling when you help solve someones problems.

ConsHaving guns pointed at you in armed robberies.

If you like taking enough time to fully ensure the customer has the correct item and correctly understands how to get what they need from it, you wont be on the favorite employee list of the district manager, the whole operation from the top down is geared to fleecing the customer as much as possible, as quickly as possible, then you only get 7% of the sales or minimum wage, what ever is higher.
If your in a high volume store you may do ok but most of the stores you be doing hugely well to make $2 more than minimum without using morally questionable tactics.

Or you can go into management, where you end up being there about 10 hours a day 6 days a week, and suddenly that salary doesnt look much bigger than your previous pay rate.

Managers change fairly often (5 times in 6 years I was there) and his boss wants a sales gain every month, that just isnt always possible, especially when you almost always have the highest prices in town (And back then ONLY offered house branded items)

Corporate sales pressure disrupts the team into competitors trying to beat the other to the big fish customers.

Just ok

Administrative (Current Employee)

I have been working at RadioShack full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat training opportunity by people I feel were excellent teachers/examples, in higher positions. Relaxed atmosphere, always busy, for the most part respectful co-workers.

ConsDepending on District Manager - training can be lacking for sales associates. Sales associates are young, immature, typically not looking to learn. Upper management tends to have unrealistic ideas as to how long things should take to be completed or unrealistic views on how things should be done. A lot of repetitive work.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo out and speak to people, not only at the corporate office- or the stores in Ft. Worth, but the other stores out there. Find out what Store Managers, District Admins (who are out in field) and District Managers are thinking. Find the missing links and then the company would be 100x stronger.

Lack of pay for Knowledge needed

MTI (Current Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I have been working at RadioShack full-time for more than a year

ProsEmployees are great to work with. I got to talk to customers about the latest technologies on the market. Employee discount is nice.

ConsPay was not on par with the knowledge you need to help customers effectively. Minimum wage plus 2% commission on everything you sell.

Not a bad place to work

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
New Orleans, LA

I worked at RadioShack full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe environment was mostly relaxed and the work was not hard. It was actually quite fun at times.

ConsThe company did ask to meet unrealistic expectations, but have since been revamped. Upper management was very cutthroat.
