I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are great and highly qualified. Some are better at dealing with the garbage that goes on there. There were 2 senior leaders there when I worked there that really supported the employee and they made it a great place to work.

    Cons

When one of the two senior leaders retired then the second one passed away the place went to hell in a hand basket. You were left with senior leaders that did whatever the owner wanted so they wouldn't place their positions in jeopardy.

I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Interesting technology, products and colleagues

    Cons

Management is just one person. The grandson of the founder and all midlevel and upper managers are absolutely scared of thin and they are all kiss ass. Every time he reads a management book, he tries to push it throughout the company. So the work atmosphere changes depending on his reading habits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are not a large company and one man does not make a management team.

I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

All of your co-workers are completely competent and skilled.
Solid brand (except for the work environment), high quality products.
Financially very secure and able to invest.

    Cons

Being paranoid of what could go wrong and a devil's advocate for reasons not to progress are considered badges of honor.
Everyone in the company is looking for a better opportunity, but Rain Bird pays well and similar jobs in Tucson, AZ are hard to find.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It doesn't matter. The advice will be ignored, anyway. Even managers at the highest level shut down their desires to change this company for the better, or they will be shown the door.

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

The only pro is that they pay better than the competition. They have the best products on the market and the best people at the sales and product management level

    Cons

They have to pay better, because it is such a poor working environment.
    Benefits are terrible
upper management is focused on wrong things.
no feeling of support for employees
High turnover of product managers, Engineers and sales people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update your management style to the new century. If you continue to do what you have always done the 60% turnover rate is never going to change.

    I worked at Rain Bird

    Pros

It is a great product and your fellow employees are usually of a very good caliber. It makes you feel good to work wiht quality people that "get it"

    Cons

At this point you've probably read all the posts on here that are negative. I'll share that I was actually an employees much longer ago that indicated on here, but was compelled to post after stumbling on the site. Even after nearly 10 years of being going I find may of the negative comments resonating with my whatI experienced. Lack of trust.. It is truly McGregor's "theory X" management style at work, from an academic standpoint it is very interesting to see - at least I had never see it in this pure of form before!

As marketing, you have a GREAT product to work with. However, don't expect to get creative with it, and don't expect to take their great market recognition and presence and run with it.

They are entrenched in what they have always done, and unfortunately that continues today. While the insults i've seen thrown at the very top management may be inapprpriate, they not completely un-credible. RB is a comapny that has been very successful, but it is now time to go from a family-run styles of business and get a professional mangement team in place.

The comapany, product and people have an incredible amount of potential. it's time to unleash that potential.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Guys, for 10 years or more it has been time for Tony to step aside, and do it without shame. Take pride in what has been accomplished - the company has been incredibly successful, but it can be so much more so with the right team in place.

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

Rain Bird has good name brand recognition and quality products.
it is nice to work for an industry leader.
    They pay well.

    Cons

Rain Bird does not see the value of an employee. People are hired and let go constantly. They hire for the moment, but not for the long term vision. People doing a great job in one department because a different division is struggling at the moment. There are not many tenured people in middle management. Out of my department of 24 people, only 3 had been there over 4 years.
Top management is also so paranoid about having any sales or product cost figures leaked to the competition that they do not even let their sales managers know important costs and figures they could use to better do their jobs. It's insane. The freakiest atmosphere I've ever experienced. Everyone watching their backs and running around paranoid about their jobs. It's weird.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire good people and give them a chance to help your company. Give them the tools they need and you'll be surprised at how they become as much of an asset as your products. They may even add more value to your customers than your product. Let's face it, product differences are getting negligible. However, the human difference can be huge.

What happened to the "people" working in the company. The ones that really bring the money in.

    I worked at Rain Bird

    Pros

It use to be a great place to work. At least in Tucson. Many of the managers cared about their employees and awards were given out regularly.

    Cons

Now it is a different story. Within the same department people are treated differently. The manager walks in and says "How's my favorite inspector to one person. Greet them, joke with them and the rest of us don't even get a greeting. And they'll get the praise no matter how long the job takes them, while someone else may get a write up for going too slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember the people at the bottom. They are the ones keep the business coming in. They pack the boxes, check the quality and ship the product on time and to the right location.

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

    Great People
    High Quality Product
    Market Driven Organization
    Viewed as an Industry Leader
Privately held company - Investing for the future in a down economy

    Cons

Little chance for advancement - your weaknesses or perceived weaknesses are identified early on with little chance of recovery; hence most higher level positions are filled with individuals from outside the organization whose weaknesses have not yet been identified (a vicious cycle).
Employees have little or no industry experience ----- even those employees who are in contact with our customers
A bunch of YES MEN form the Senior Staff.....Even they fear for their job as much as the other employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

WAKE-UP.... We are living off of Rain Bird's legacy and not building the business on it's own merit. We need to replace most of the current Senior Management team (AKA YES Men) with true LEADERS who can improve the morale of the organization before a real solid competitor comes in and knocks the BIRD off its perch.

    Pros

    Rain Bird hires the best.
High turn over allows better than normal networking

    Cons

Little to no communication regarding company direction.
Strategic direction appears to change significantly from year to year
General lack of trust from Management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a three to five year strategic direction, minimize any changes and communicate it to the entire company so that everyone can understand how thier efforts support the plan.

    Pros

Rain Bird has great name recognition in the industry and has very good product quality. There are a lot of very talented people at Rain Bird.

    Cons

There is very little information shared with the employees at Rain Bird. The company also has very high turnover in many areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rain Bird should share more information between employees and groups. Rain Bird should also focus on making less arbitrary decisions when firing employees.
