    Pros

Innovative products when new products are being funded.
    Ok benefits.
    It's a pay check.

    Cons

Quality issues are stifling new product development which is leaving Rain Bird behind in the industry.
New technologies are not being incorporated into new products.
Management dose not value their employees.
Even employees that perform well will be eliminated because of the forced ranking system.
The employees are scared to speak up at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not lose sight of the new technologies that are being used in ALL other industries. Without the incorporation of these new technologies Rain Bird will continue to slip behind its competitors.

I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Rain Bird pays well. They also have good benefits. They emphasize continuous improvement, although provide little training. Advancement is possible.

    Cons

Rain Bird likes to hire career driven people who thrive in competition. This creates an atmosphere of extreme competition. Everyone tries to manage those around them. No one actually does much work. Every day at work felt like being a contestant on “Survivor.” If you thrive in a cut-throat, competitive environment and you are good at what you do, you will like Rain Bird.
A lot of jobs are being sent to Mexico (Engineering, Human Resources, Accounting …)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of “transitioning out” people in the bottom 20% performance level, give them realistic training goals and provide them with resources. to achieve their goals.

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

    - Pays well, especially in the Tucson market
    - If you get the right manager, your career with Rain Bird can be great.

    Cons

    - Bad decision making by senior management
    - Overworked with unfair benefits (especially vacation time)
    - Poor processes in place to provide wise decision making
    - Strategy does not exist - everything is shoot from the hip

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some senior staff members create a culture of fear with no opportunities for improvement or change. Working in these groups creates a bad atmophere.

    I worked at Rain Bird

    Pros

Decent pay, robust processes, commitment to quality, commitment to growth, stable business in tough economy, appears to be economically sound with conservative decisions regarding spending.

    Cons

More secretive than the CIA. Information is tough to come by, revolving door for many positions, aggressive ranking system that fosters distrust.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The should realize the way they operate, it will make them warped in their thinking and make them @#$ kissers the rest of their lives.

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

Roles are not specific so you can learn a lot of different areas. There is a lot of flexibility. Most of the people are hard-working and intelligent.

    Cons

There is no communication. So much turnover that nothing gets done. Senior Management is not acknowledging that there is a problem and, in many cases, are contributing to the problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You pride yourselves on hiring the best. Give these people the tools they need to succeed. Why are you surprised that people that have criticisms want to remain anonymous when anyone who brings up a problem is permanent labeled "negative"?

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

Wages are above average for the area. Hours are good. There is no overtime therefore planning off time is reliable. The rank and file personnel are good, talented people.

    Cons

I feel like a pawn in a game I have no idea of. This causes feelings of uncertain future. Are they moving to Mexico?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people on the floor. Give better idea of the vision of the division. Control the inter-division rivalry and focus on the bottom line of the company, not the individual divisions. We are throwing away lots of money to satisfy the ego of some at other divisions. Look at a person's experience more than his education.

    Pros

Your everyday co-workers keep you there, not management.

    Cons

Complete lack of organization and communication at mostly all levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the RB slogan of "We Hire The Best" they need to also addres the constant undertone termoil to "Retain The Best".

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

The compensation is great. They hire pretty great people for the most part. They prefer that their customer service representatives have a master's degree for cryin' out loud...that's not a joke.

    Cons

They hire great people, but they don't really care about retention. They'll hire the best, use every ounce of their soul because every department is under-staffed, tell them they do a so-so job and shrug their shoulders when those great people decide to leave. I've seen some excellent people come and go through the Rain Bird Revolving Door (complete with metal detectors on the way in AND out). Also, the vacation is pretty stingy. It's a running joke throughout the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't think senior management really cares about anyone's advice. But, I would just say that attrition costs you money. Valuable knowledge and training walks out the door with every employee that leaves. If you don't care about the cost of your huge employee turn over rate, fine. Otherwise, Rain Bird needs to stop seeing employees as just expenses, but needs to start valuing them as ASSETS. If you hire the best, then learn to keep the best. Study companies that have great employee retention to see what they're doing right. I bet you'd find that the majority of people aren't leaving simply because of the money because Rain Bird pays very well.

I have been working at Rain Bird

    Pros

Rain Bird is the world's largest manufacturer of irrigation products and services. Rain Bird hires very talented, self motivated employees. If you are looking for a challenging work envirnoment, Rain Bird might be a good fit. Rain Bird is a "green" industry company focused on water conservation (The Intellegent Use Of Water). Rain Bird offers good a overall compensation package.

    Cons

Very difficult work environment at Rain Bird. The employee turnover is way too high. The irrigation industry is full of ex-Rain Bird employees hell-bent on burying Rain Bird. Company has questionable HR practices and has a habit of forcing out older employees (over 50). Rain Bird Senior management is holding company back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees with respect. Send as much time and effort retaining top employees as you spend hiring employees. Start making decisons like your company depended on it...... it does!
