    Pros

Brilliant and wonderful thinkers within the R & D division keep this company afloat. These are the inventors who extend and expand the capabilities of technology. It was a joy to work with several of these individuals. If you want to invent the future, Rambus may be a place where you can thrive.

    Cons

The company's primary business expertise is inventing and licensing. Producing products and services is a new line of business, and as such, it can be a challenge--it depends on the project. If you interview for this section of the company, analyze the playing field and determine whether the project and people will be a positive fit for you.

    Advice to Management

    1. Communicate detailed product vision to all employees. 2. Require transparency and accountability of all managers and employees. 3. Provide proactive, corrective guidance on a continual, as-needed basis, rather than waiting for large events 4. Define the project process, roles & responsibilities, communication/escalation chain, deadlines, and risk mitigation strategies. Follow up to ensure these project aspects are being maintained, and if not, why not. Correct and repeat.

    Pros

Benefits are pretty good. Work environment is pretty good as well. There are some great people that work there which made the experience enjoyable.

    Cons

While I was there, there was a huge turnover in my department. At the end, the VP they hired in our department pretty much made everyone leave including contractors. I know they probably said everyone left due to different circumstances, but the root cause was due to the VP they hired. I think it was more specific from our department and not necessarily reflects the company as a whole.

    Pros

Beautiful downtown San Francisco offices, friendly intelligent co-workers, good benefits and pay, flexible hours, decent work/life balance.

    Cons

Too many layers of management, some of whom are clueless and non-technical, for such a small company. Very political. Not as meritocratic as I would expect for a smallish company. One runs away from huge companies (Google, Intel, Oracle, etc...) in hopes of finding less BS and politics at MUCH smaller companies but unfortunately - not true. I expected it to be more startup-like, where startups tend to operate with very low overhead and more performance-orientation, flatter management layer - but I am disappointed to learn that it's quite the opposite.

    Advice to Management

Engineers are not the problem - they are rarely incompetent. When droves of engineers quit, that's a STRONG signal that something is severely wrong with management at the company.

    Pros

Our team was working on a good product. The pay was good as a contractor. My immediate team was good.

    Cons

The layers of management made it difficult to get a handle on what the goal was. I would accomplish a lot, but because different managers wanted differnt things they would not understand what I had been doing.

    Pros

+ Good salary and benefits + Open communication and lack of boundaries + Not much work pressure + CEO committed to adding share-holder value

    Cons

    - A good company should have lots of "value creating engineers" and a few managers/hands-off engineers. Rambus has lots of management and hands-off engineers, but very few hands-on engineers who create value. - Trying to launch products, but there are still lots of design IP projects which don't ever create $$. - Very strong old boy network in parts of the company. Most Rambus VPs and Senior VPs are white Americans. While many of them are cosmopolitan, many of them give more responsibility to people with similar cultures whom they are more comfortable with. One would expect responsibility to be given based on performance - that's not always the case. - Performance-based incentives are far less compared to other Silicon Valley companies. - No real vision. Just boosting stock price is not a vision, like a previous reviewer said. The single-minded focus on boosting stock price leads to frequent cost cutting and layoffs to boost the next few quarters' EPS (which hurt the company in the long run). - Company has a reputation for not-so-good professional ethics. While the marketing team is trying to change this perception in the industry, some of the company's behavior is still on the borderline of what can be considered ethical. For example, people are frequently laid off just 3-4 days before their 6 month bonus payments (often worth $30k-40k) are due. These employees are out of a job unexpectedly, and at the same time the company relies on fine print to deny them money they believe they've earned.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the number of managers, hire and retain people who create value.

    Pros

Perks were nice - good benefits, stocked fridge with snacks. Easy access to top management.

    Cons

Company is not respected in the industry. Too much litigation past tied to it, hence bad reputation. Tough to grow revenue.

    Advice to Management

    Diversify

    Pros

Very friendly atmosphere Competitive pay( I was an intern there and my pay was comparable to what my friends in other sw firms were being paid) Good work/life balance

    Cons

They seem to be going through a bit of a dry patch at the moment. They went through a 15% staffing cut while I was there.

    Pros

Benefits are phenomenal, location is great. New product-centric business units run like up-beat startups with purpose. New CEO seems to have a good perspective on transitioning to a business services model.

    Cons

Kind of a downer to work for a licensing company that makes money primarily by patent infringement lawsuits. Patent troll culture is kind of ingrained in the middle management. Cost-cutting inevitably creates a "get out while you can" environment until the transition to a new business model turns the corner.

    Advice to Management

Flatten the structure by a level. Flush the management structure to bring in product-centric folks to match the new business model. Change the company name, not just the logo.
