Great People...Corporate doesn't always see that

Senior Systems Engineer II (E04) (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsChallenging Problems, Steady, Good Contracts, Growth

ConsSome programs are very top heavy, You have to change programs to move up...some engineers have good breadth of experience, but it is rarely noticed

Layoffs...fact of life in defence right now

Advice to Senior ManagementLook beyond those metrics in your rankings...definitely look beyong the performance reviews. There are some engineers and scientists that perform well outside of the pigeon holes.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcelent benifits, great opertunites to move around within the company

ConsWorking on a government contract does have its downsides, such as if the govenment goes with another contractor then you are pretty much SoL as far sustaining employement.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWhen you are making products that protect the warfighter, it makes your job feel very important and it drives you to do more for the company. People are great to work with, benefits are great, we are paid well too. 9/80 schedule is also very awesome.

ConsNot much room to get promoted, unpredictability of the defense budget sometimes adds stress

One of the best company I ever worked for

ProsProvides decent and competitive salary. Exposed to the advance technology that you cannot get from small-medium size company. You'll feel proud that you work with that big organization.

ConsSince the defense budget cut, People are losing their jobs.

Local site in large corporation manages to retain family values

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Fort Wayne, IN

ProsGreat people, stimulating work, genuine passion for quality and value

ConsDefense industry is still 70% of the portfolio and even though the business is well positioned in the market, neglect of this legitimate function of the federal government has forced business restructuring and downsizing. The company is way past using reduction in force to eliminate dead wood and is forced to eliminate excellent performers. Good performance evaluations are no guarantee of longevity with the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementStay the course. Remain true to ethics. Stay in touch with the good workers you have lost (invite me to the picnic like a retiree). Remember that this too shall pass.

    Good, stable career path

Senior Cyber Engineer I (Current Employee) Salt Lake City, UT

ProsI respect the Raytheon values and their efforts to continuously keep their employees trained on the latest security, ethics, and legal issues regarding our company and our jobs. Raytheon is at or near the top of the most respected companies in the defense industry for good reason. The pay is great, the benefits are great, employment is very stable, and work/life balance is top notch. While I am at a smaller division that is geographically isolated from much of the rest of the company where vertical growth is slower, the stuff we do is pretty important and I feel good about what I do.

If you like a stable environment where the pay/benefits are good, many of the staff take mornings off on powder days, and you want to do something important for our country, then this is the place for you.

ConsThe air quality in the Salt Lake valley is comparable to Beijing on several days during the winter season. Also, like I mentioned above, if you are very ambitious you may not have as many vertical opportunities as you may like here.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that the decisions you make, or fail to make, do affect everyone else here. Do not wait until the end of a release cycle to start planning for the next.

ConsThe time needed on site is difficult with small children.
