A rare company that practices what it preaches

Software Architect (Current Employee)
Westford, MA

I have been working at Red Hat full-time for more than 5 years

ProsRed Hat has a strong commitment to open-source software. It contributes to the advancement of technology around the world, allowing people to build atop the work of others to produce products and solutions greater than the sum of their parts.

The corporate culture is by far the finest I have experienced. The culture of collaboration permeates every level of the business.

ConsRed Hat's salaries do not always measure up to the giants of Silicon Valley. The work-life balance can sometimes be difficult to maintain, as everyone in engineering performs multiple jobs.

Red Hat can be stingy at times, such as requiring employees to room together on business trips.

Advice to Senior ManagementLoosen the purse-strings a bit to avoid losing good people to soulless companies with deep pockets. People will stay at Red Hat for the corporate culture if the pay gap shrank a bit.

Outstanding products and brilliant coworkers

Technical Support Engineer (Former Employee)
Raleigh, NC

I worked at Red Hat full-time for more than a year

ProsTruly lives up to the term "collaboration" and breathes the open source principles in day-to-day operations. Some truly brilliant coworkers who are passionate about what they do. The learning curve is very steep, but the environment is supportive and tech support engineers gain experience very quickly. Train every TSE for RHCE and require they attain it to maintain their position. Continue to develop internal and external tools to streamline workflow and make the organization more efficient.

ConsThe compensation is far from competitive. This aids in attracting those who are passionate about the technology and open source culture; however, it is difficult to raise a family and pay debts on the poor pay. Also causes a constant churn of the most skilled engineers.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the pay more competitive. You don't have to lead the pack, but reduce the gap.

Far and away the best job I've ever had

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Red Hat full-time for more than 3 years

ProsMy job is challenging to the point of not knowing whether I can succeed, which provides quite a thrill once you get used to it. Also, I get to work on truly ground-breaking ideas that I've never even thought about before joining the company. Finally, people listen to you here...no matter whether you've just joined and they're a few levels up the management chain, if your ideas are good they get attention.

ConsThe business is growing so fast it can be pretty hard to keep up with the things you need to know to do your job. Also, because we're so interested in technological innovation, it seems like we're constantly interested in a slightly better solution than the one we have (for a given internal need). These collude to produce an environment where documentation can sometimes be hard to find, and it can mean tracking down a specific person to get answers you need to do your work. Since we're a truly global business, that may mean dealing with awkward timezone differences to ask questions.

Red Hat Review

MIddleware Sales Specialist (Current Employee)
Cincinnati, OH

I have been working at Red Hat full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat company. Employees are passionate about the company's mission and objectives.

ConsSmaller company (6,000) employees, so there is not an unlimited number of resources as compared to an Oracle or Microsoft.

I get to do what I love to do

Principal Software Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Red Hat full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI work remote. They care more about results than hours worked. I get to work with the open source community. The managers have a high respect for their engineers. Everyone I work with is a team player, there's no dead weight. It's hard to write 20 words about the"cons" of working here ;-)

ConsThey really want you to share hotel rooms when you travel. You have to give weekly status reports. You have to take ethics training once a year (via online).

Advice to Senior ManagementAdd more to the travel budget and let engineers book individual rooms. That will help moral.

Great company - plan to stick around for a long time

Senior QA Engineer (Current Employee)
Raleigh, NC

I have been working at Red Hat full-time for more than 8 years

ProsA great company to work for. I've been there for many years, and it still has a small-ish feel even though it has grown 5x (employees) during that time. Most of my coworkers in the engineering department are smart, motivated, and good to work with. They stick to their principles of open source. Communication internally is very good. I feel like in general, the company cares about their employees and tries (within reason) to make us happy. It's a stable environment and I've never felt any concerns about layoffs or downsizing - if anything it's the opposite (growing pains).

ConsOf all the jobs I've had internally, I've found management to be very hands-off. i.e. "You know what you need to do, so do it". At times I've wished I had more direction, but I'd take that over a micromanager.

Awesome Company!! Get paid to be part of the solutions not the problem.

Senior Solutions Architect (Current Employee)

ProsEvery open-minded and creative culture. Truly values their employees. After all opensource is about community. Redhat even as a gowning company keep the core values of source strong.

ConsVery tech savy company. Those that like to use MS word and Outlook for mail may find it quite different.
