    Good Place to Learn & Good Work/Life Balance

    ProsEuropean owned company - 37.5 hr work week! Good balance work/life balance....you aren't working crazy hours which can be a common expectation in the marketing field at other companies. Learning opportunities are readily available in order to promote advancement in your career. Friendly people to work with.

    Advice to Senior ManagementTo keep good workers, salaries need to be a bit more competitive.

    ProsGreat benefits, work/life balance. Advancement can happen if you play the politics right and are ambitious. Flexibility allows for internal job switching if an opportunity comes.

    ConsMy personal experience was bad because I worked for the American publishing division which was eventually sold off. The division I worked for was in sale mode for nearly four years, and that meant very little investment in technology or business expansion. Overall, the senior management seemed directionless and inaccessible. There was little or no communication between the various divisions.

    Enjoyed the "family-oriented company" atmosphere.
    Company sponsored events for employees.
    On-site cafeteria.

    ConsOngoing restructuring led to disorganization and confusing strategy.
    Difficulty in synching product delivery with IT.
    Unprofessional behavior from manager was never addressed by HR.

    Advice to Senior ManagementMicromanaging never leads to a positive product outcome. Suggest stepping back and letting editorial staff do his/her job.

    Nice place to work, can be challenging for an American to get ahead

    ProsGreat work life balance, they understand that employees have lives and the goal is to do your job not just show up in a specific location.

    It is a truly global organization so the opportunity to interact meaningfully with a wide range of people is very real.

    ConsElsevier can be very euro-centric in how people are promoted and treated. When I was there it was much more common for Europeans to be promoted into senior U.S. based positions than the opposite. It came across as a glass ceiling for Americans.

    Getting things done can be tedious. There are layers of internal departments who main function appears to be form completion and project delay. This is common to many large organizations so it's not a unique problem. It did get worse over time though as more MBAs entered the business.

    Constant shifting coupled with no real change

    ProsGenerally treats its employees well. Time off, working flexibility are good, pensions, benefit were good but have been getting worse. Work life can be very pleasant and measured, all the usual trappings of a company their size.

    ConsNo-one's heard of the company. People know the brands but expect to explain how to pronounce Reed Elsevier (reed el-severe) let alone what they do. It seems like change happens at a glacial place. Management has been turned over several times in the last 2yrs, this, coupled with the downturn, has led to continued product stagnation and a general lack of overall direction. They've been steadying the ship but don't have a rudder or any wind the sails.

    Advice to Senior ManagementSet some direction, communicate it, to the employees and to the market stick to it.

    The greatest publisher in the world-content wise, but a difficult place in which to succeed.

    ProsThe largest publisher in the world, delivering critical material to science professionals that ultimately helps in discoveries to improve life and living everywhere.

    ConsThis applies to the books group only: Heavily matrixed organization, difficult to learn one's way. Systems need work. Change is constant. Sr exec sometimes insults/berates employees publicly and allows an environment for other employees to follow suit.

    In a cutthroat market, you need to be in touch with all employees.

    ProsReed Elsevier provides a decent salary and package, compared to the rest of the industry, which is in dire straits.. Some nice co-workers made the experience pleasant on a day to day basis. Management is pleasant on the face of it, as it is most places in publishing, but gives poor, useless, or no feedback while a project is going on. It has a good reputation in an industry which has the shakes, thanks to diversified products that keep its neck above water.

    ConsThere is poor communication throughout the system, a throwback to an era when things moved along at a lazy pace in publishing. But it matters a lot today. Heavy on the politics, even to the detriment of work time.

    Advice to Senior ManagementBetter communication up and down. Reward outstanding contributors to the team effort.

    Low pay, and mind-numbing work, but you can take lots of days off...

    ProsThe company is based in Europe, so the attitude throughout the U.S. offices seems to be a tad more "Euro" also. Great vacation time, sick time, AND personal days. Managers are known for being fairly chill and understanding. There is also the opportunity to travel if you have been at the company long enough, and if you are lucky, basically.

    ConsLOW pay and VERY limited opportunity for advancement, even though management (via corporate)tries to act like there is, by requiring you to fill out a "personal development plan" that is basically BS. It is a genius idea to keep us motivated, but it becomes a big joke to anyone who had been there longer than a year. My branch was also littered with people who were probably considered "unemployable" for the most part, and were just happy to have a job.

    Advice to Senior ManagementBe a bit more candid about our significance in the company. We know there is little to no chance for promotion. We know our job is easily replaced by outsourcing (or more sophisticated softwware). Don't kiss our ass and give us a condescending pat on the head (or a measly $5 starbux card) when we do something right. Anyone who has a half a brain can see through it and it's demoralizing.
