    Pros

    Large, multi-national media company that successfully transitioned from print to digital. Lots of diversity and interesting locations, projects and really great, dedicated people.

    Cons

    Executive management can be stifling and are often misguided by expensive consultants. Loyalty, passion and dedication are quickly forgotten when senior management changes. The really sharp senior executives who get recruited and hired are smart enough to leave within a few weeks leaving behind backward-thinking mediocrity.

    Advice to Management

    Former CEO Sir Crispin Davis was dedicated but best known for his 10 years of continual cost cutting. His successor Erik Engstrom has continued that legacy with a spend-to-save mentality that drove the share price up but at great cost to the workforce - resulting in layoffs and eroded customer retention. Recommend focusing on employee value and contribution vs. rank and titles. The firm values and invests in leadership but not the required expertise to a large degree.

    Pros

    Can't think of any anymore

    Cons

    Lots of cons.. In IT we have a reorg at least twice per year. They are always laying people off.
    Benefits used to be good now I can't even afford my own prescriptions. I spend $500 a month on health insurance and can't afford anything for myself. I have to choose whether I'll pay for mine, my wife's or my daughter. Can't afford all 3.
    Haven't had a decent raise since 2000.
    They are constantly outsourcing to India, Singapore or Philippines.
    Many people don't even get raises. When you do get one, it's 1.5% or 2%.
    They brought in a VP for 3 years who had the task of firing as many people as possible.. He fired so many people that there weren't enough engineers around to do the work. Engineers called them the Mafia because they all had Italian names and were all from New York.
    NO direction from executive management. They don't have a clue..
    Engineers support thousands of servers and get zero in the way of gratitude.

    Advice to Management

    You want those servers to keep running along? PAY YOUR ENGINEERS BETTER
    start listening to us.

    Pros

    Good benefits and some perks

    Cons

    Management that is so out of touch with reality and more important, it's employees. People stay for their paycheck and lack of options.
    Constant daily changes with no regard of what employees already do, and they never consult those who do the job to see if even feasible.
    Lower level employees are held accountable for all management decisions. Management is never held accountable.
    If you disagree you're fired.
    No internal advancement, they only load up staff with no opinion staffers.
    No women to upper management. Men rule at all levels.

    Advice to Management

    Wake up! Morale is in the toilet and after all these years I repairable. Don't know anyone, and I've been here 10+ years likes where they work, or would ever speak up because of daily fear drilled into us.
    I'd say listen to your employees....but trust factor left long ago, as was respect.
    Practice your own company values!

    Pros

    "an excellent starting package with pension and medical.

    Cons

    The IT division RETS (reed Elsevier technology services) is almost all run from the US so the UK is treated like a poor offshoot, poor training if any causing a general de skilling of UK IT staff over time, no bonuses, a 3% cap on pay rises although 2% in more common, a promotion path that is totally unworkable leaving people undervalued.

    Advice to Management

    managerial change is the norm and I personally have had 7 managers in the last 5 years, everyone knows they will be sacrificed for the bottom line regardless as to there use to the company often leading to huge gaps that need to be filled quickly, this reactive approach is not dynamic but flawed as the upper management have no technical understanding yet force decisions that later often prove to be expensive and incorrect, don't work here in the UK if you want management to respect or listen to you.

    Pros

    Interesting location and some nice people work there.

    Cons

    I worked in the RETS area. It's over-siloed, over out-sourced and good communication between teams is difficult. the on boarding process is fatally flawed. The net result is that it is very difficult to understand how to do your job. There's too much process and very little procedure. They try to do things the ITIL way and fail miserably in my opinion.

    Advice to Management

    Forget about having a separate IT service department and integrate IT with the business areas.

    Pros

    Work with some excellent peers in my group and others, challenging work, with fair compensation.

    Cons

    Recent re-orgs an

    Albany office will be closing, while i expect to be able to continue a HBE, the impact to people I've been working with for years and to the city, where Matthew Bender has had a historical precence is challenging.

    Communication, current organization is not well defined or understood.

    Pros

    Facilities, good IT department, international atmosphere and welcoming people. Good possibilities to enter an International career in Publishing Bizz.
    Elsevier offers you international experience and looks great on your resume. I had some mixed experience with the company but with the right team and structure you would probably learn a lot.

    Cons

    MATRIX fixed company, not suitable for Interns with low academic background. Be more than just pro active, because their might not be any guarantee for you to have a plan.
    The HR department is not flexible so be sure you have a very clear (written) contract before you begin, to the details about what you are obligated to!

    Pros

    Benefits, but I don't really know how well these compare with other companies.

    Cons

    Employees are treated as disposable. Employees in the UK have no properly constituted representation and management are free to ignore workers issues on reorganisation. Professional standards have been lowered to match a cost-cutting mentality which drives the business, with quality as a distant secondary consideration. Innovation is being touted as the way forward but there is little evidence of this. Unimaginative management and a lack of real vision is holding back this development. Company is unwilling to invest in research and development and consequently is behind competitors in key areas. Company vision is too inward looking and too process driven to the point where what we do (to generate revenue) seems less important than how we do it. A cheap employee rather than an expert employee seems to be the prevaling vision. Not a plan for cutting-edge achievement.

    Advice to Management

    Respect and value expertise and knowledge in your people. Uphold the values you advocate. Invest in the future and don't expect to get something for nothing.

    Pros

    Global Presence with strong brand names in it's portfolio

    Cons

    Its not "What you know" it's "who you know" and "How Well You Know" gets you anywhere
