I have been working at Regional Transportation District full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

50% government and 50% private agency providing Denver area with an excellent public transit system. Many exciting new projects like a major expansion of Denver's light rail system. Lots of opportunities in the right areas. Many dedicated lower level employees who care deeply for their community and company.

    Cons

This applies to the 50% government side where I work. Some managers function like loud mouth playground bullies. Seems like their entire sense of self worth comes from tearing people down. Will refuse to listen when staff brings important issues up like major safety violations. Fatal accident occurred several years ago because management cared more about belittling employee's concerns than addressing issue. Management sabotages the EEO manager by threatening employees with defamation lawsuits when employees use the chain of command to address discrimination. Management tries to get employees to secretly tape record other staff and creates conflict among staff. They'll falsely claim to an employee that they can't get a raise or promotion because a minority employee will file a discrimination charge. Whenever you try to bring a serious issue up you are told; "put up and shut up" and "forget about it, it is all in the past." Some managers even continue to harass employees off the clock or even after the employee has quit their job at RTD. Management also has zero regard and respect for the publicly elected board of directors and feel that they can always B.S. them. Employees are ordered under threat of termination to falsify reports that are sent to the board of directors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"forget about it, it is in the past" is a sure fire way to guarantee problems in the future. Human Resources, security and legal should be outsourced. They are so corrupted by the current culture that they can't be fixed and need to be completely removed from the company. Telephone info center should be privatized and an additional resource be made available for employees who want to speak out but can't due to the constant threat of retaliation that currently exists. All of the different street supervision and dispatch need to be brought under 1 umbrella and privately contracted. At the very least this company does have some excellent printed policies. Those policies should be equally enforced for all.

Very Little Accountability To The Public or Employees

I have been working at Regional Transportation District full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Government agency that provieds public transit to the Denver area. Good benefits and many good people.

    Cons

A small clique with a bunker mentality controls the company. Employees cannot speak out without fear of retaliation. Very junior high level when it comes to management. Tandrums and threats are common. Even throwing objects like chairs at employees. Management comes to work at 9:30 goes home at 2:00 while staff works 6-7 days a week and 10-12 hours a day. When management comes in they spend more time having on the clock parties, cussing out staff, cruising the internet and using company cars on personal errands like buying handguns after the Aurora theatre shooting. Homophopic comments common and management tries to turn emplooyees against each other in order to deflect from real problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire an independent ombusman that employees will feel safe coming to and reporting problems. Put a gay employee on the diversity panel. Stop covering up problems. Firing whistleblowers who finally were left with no choice but to speak out cures nothing. Get rid of the dead wood at the top who care more about protecting their perks and image than with providing a service to the public.

I have been working at Regional Transportation District full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Depends on the department. Some areas have great leadership and are enjoyable to work in. Good benefits like the wellness center. Free bus rides. Feel like you are doing something good for community.

    Cons

Senior managers in romantic relationships with direct reports against printed policy. Managers, male and female, threatening staff if they refuse a date. If you report EEO violations to HR retaliation is a sure thing. Company marinates itself in the f-word and other gutter language. Sexist and misogynistic attitude towards women. Insecure and weak women managers enable and encourage the degradation of their fellow female employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up and admit that this is the year 2014. Any manager who threatens an employee and those that don't but enable the threats should be terminated. RTD elected board of directors should have a special investigator who reports directly to them.

I worked at Regional Transportation District full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people betrayed by poor leadership. Good pay and benefits. Help environment and livability of local community.

    Cons

Company worships "go along to get along." Management won't acknowledge serious issues, even covers up assaults by management on employees. An example would be a chair thrown at a female employee. Gay bashing, sexism and racist comments rampant. Serious us against them culture between contractors and RTD and also different departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Violence in workplace is not a joke. Must investigate all employee issues instead of witch hunts, kangaroo courts and threats to employees. Entire management team needs a top down evaluation. Simply branding employees who are courageous enough to speak out as disgruntled employees solves nothing.
