I worked at Reinsurance Group of America

    Pros

Work is great but way too political. Company is financially sound & will be around for years.

    Cons

No opportunity for advancement if you do your job well- fail at what you do and you will climb the corporate ladder! They do not respect long-term employees and people only stay because they think they can't make money somewhere else. For an insurance/reinsurance company, benefits are EXPENSIVE. Operations Department needs to change all management for a fresh look at work & no grudges remaining from 10 years ago. They don't care about their people. Look somewhere else for employment!!! Also they don't teach workers about processes - only encourage you to get the job done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire new management to give departments a fresh start. Get rid of processes leftover from General American days!

I worked at Reinsurance Group of America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

People are very friendly. The business is relatively stable.

    Cons

I found it very difficult to actually accomplish anything within IT. The politics and old corporate mindset stopped short any attempt at innovation or progress. Every tool/solution has to meet the needs of the entire department, and so nothing ever happens. The clients have not been exposed to proper IT practices and so that is an additional barrier to getting anything right. All in all not a toxic environment, but a frustrating one. It is attracting and retaining people who are just there for a paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jettison your 90's model of IT and empower your teams to innovate again.

I have been working at Reinsurance Group of America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart actuaries. Core of the business. Very generous vacation policy. Work is not strenuous. Most people do not work more than 40 hours. A busy week is 50-60 hours.

    Cons

They are going to run into some headwinds soon. Support departments such as it, finance and admin are inefficient. Too many new managers with big egos trying to rise to the top. They require 7-8 years experience for analyst jobs.

Too high manager/associate ratio. In some departments its 1 manager per 3 employees. This includes their managers. insane!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not hire so many people from outside. They are changing the culture of the company for the worse. Specially in technology and admin.
