I worked at Rent-A-Center full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great learning experience. Customer service, sales, team work, billing, marketing, account managing, and all of which had potential to be enjoyable. There were many good days where all required work was complete and management was pleased.

    Cons

I often felt that the products were a total rip-off price and it's hard to promote and sell something you know you wouldn't be able to sell yourself on. Also, the amount of hours demanded to work (9 - 7, close to 50 hour work weeks. Sometimes more, if staff got low or numbers were bad.) I do not advice this job if you have a family or children that may need you in the evening or on weekends. I never felt that the other employees were happy or respectful of each other. I often said "we spend more time together than we do with our own families, working our butts off with no incentives, so respecting each other is awfully important! Without it, I'd rather not be here." I'm sure that's not the case everywhere but for whatever different reasons it was in our division. Not only within our store but the others near by that we also worked closely with.

    Pros

You have the potential to make good money but only if you are in the right location.

    Cons

As a male you will be expected to do everything, & get little to no appreciation for it. You deal with the most uungrateful and disgusting people in America.

I have been working at Rent-A-Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You get great pay and big bonuses.

    Cons

You do a lot of work and sometimes other people work. They are all about your numbers. It sucks because you have a sorry sales manager making your schedule, and while they leave early everyday your doing all the work. if your have a organized fair sales manager then it will be okay but this job is stressful your away from your family all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sales managers should only be allowed to make fair schedules. They should also listen to employees concerns a lot more. If you take care of your employees they will take care of you.

I have been working at Rent-A-Center

    Pros

You do meet a lot of people
You do have the potential to make a bonus,
(But don't depend on it.. if you have a slow store, charge off's/delinquent payers, all of these things will affect your getting that bonus.)

    Cons

Slow sales, ineffective and VERY slow support from the collection team for delinquent payments, 1st payment defaults, pick ups, EXTREMELY HIGH &FAST EMPLOYEE TURNOVERS, deliberate flouting of religious beliefs/freedom (won't give you days off for church) DM'S don't complete the 32+files/calls as per SOP, THEY EXPECT YOU TO DO THEIR WORK FOR THEM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rotate Sunday AND Monday off...
live UP to company motto of improving life for employees as well as customer. Otherwise. .
you just sound pompous and insincere.

I worked at Rent-A-Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Most of the employees that work there are decent people, and there is constantly something to do that makes the day go by really fast.

    Cons

This job is NOT for somebody with a family!!!! The days start really early and can go well into the night so if your kids are involved in anything at all be prepared to miss it. There expectations are impossible to achieve and there is constant pressure from upper management to meet those expectations or you will lose your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

value your employees and give them a reason to want to stay and work hard.

    I worked at Rent-A-Center

    Pros

You get to leave the store during the day delivering product or flyering

    Cons

Nasty work environment, rude people, you have to hound people morning noon and night, bosses hound you if your not selling whether you are on delivery all week or not

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow down training process. Give each applicant plenty of time to learn a section before going on to something knew andexpecting them to automatically understand how or why your doing it that way.

    I worked at Rent-A-Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensations was very good, if you were on the old pay scale.

    Cons

Work life balance was horrible. Weekends off were unheard of and almost anti religious in this environment. Expectations for field level and district level employees was unattainable.
We were told of great and exiting upcoming things, which all to often never materialized, despite informing out team members and clients. Constant back peddling and re justifying company direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would not recommend. Study the stocks, the expectations, and extreme changes going on in their home office and executive levels.

I have been working at Rent-A-Center full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great experience with customer service, guaranteed overtime (where the real bacon was brought home) and an excellent employee purchase program. You will learn to hone your skills in entry consumer sales, merchandise service and resolution of customer discrepancies.

    Cons

Store level business focus is no longer about matching the merchandise to the customer, but about how high you can raise your APU (average price per unit). This company used to truly create an atmosphere where the merchandise would sell itself as ground breaking and cutting edge, where as now you focus on how deep can you get into the customer's pocket while selling the American dream.

At times where there was actual potential for a life long career with visions of long term goals, the mantra now states, "what can you do for me today". Bipolar management makes you unsure as far as what your goal is for the day, until you get the emails from the regional director and the additional snippet from the district manager who directly correlate numbers and effort together. Imagine the " if wishes were fishes " mentality.

They have recently cut hours across the hourly board in the name of "more time with the family" when in fact your stock has dropped off the charts and we needed to save ≈$21M. I can live with the cut but don't tell me an orange is an apple by shaving a half hour of each morning and cutting meal period in half.

When they say RAC is your life's work, they mean it. The only guaranteed off day is Sunday on account of the storefronts being closed (for now). You get the feeling of compassion for those who even attempt to blacklist you to start here (is. Stockholm Syndrome)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Legitimate interpersonal leaders are a must in this industry and Ernie Talley is rolling in his grave at the management and (lack of) true leadership in the districts and regions across the company. Make a long term relationship with your employees by considering some intangibles (employee development for starters) before promoting to District Manager and above. Don't falter at one days hiccup but rather try not to deviate from long term goals over losing 3 bor on a Wednesday, per se.

    Pros

Employee purchase after 6 months if you can put up with the bull!!!

    Cons

I received a $.25 raise but got my hours cut by 3 from 50 to 47. I am still losing about 47.00 a week in pay becuse the company has standards that are ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to rent to just anyone. The verification process is not enough. I cannot make grown people pay their bill. If they don't pay pick it up. you cannot expect that all stores will be in compliance with your credit system. Some people come into the store with the intent to steal. Get a better system of verification, and you will have better customers. Lower your prices and you will have even more customers. Stop preying on the poor and giving your employees less then 1/16% of your gross revenue to make a business run.

    Cons

    long hours not enough pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

some of your dm's don't really give a crap about their managers they ask them to do things that they know are not right, and when the crap hits the fan they turn the other way and act like they had no idea????? you have lost a lot of good managers because of this! they are in it for themselves only,a paycheck they only pretend to care. Just look at the stores that have lost good managers and see what happened to the BOR after they were gone - look at that stat and you wont wonder what is going on???????
