I have been working at Rentrak full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are plenty of interesting problems to work on. While it will depend on the department, the company is interested in updating its substantial amount of legacy code to use new technologies. There are many talented people working here, and the management of the technology department is very open to input from the rank and file. The atmosphere is very collegial, with an emphasis on collaboration and spreading knowledge. In 2012 I was considering quitting due to problems with IT management, but since then there has been a big turnaround that has made all the difference for my quality of life at work.

    Cons

Sometimes sales is overzealous and sells a feature without consulting the engineering department, resulting in a sudden shift in priorities and compromises on the design quality and/or work/life balance. The CEO is a sales guy who often comes across as tone-deaf to the concerns of the rank-and-file.

I worked at Rentrak full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people you get to work with at Rentrak are the best part of the company. It's almost expected to have people randomly come into your office and chat just to catch up. The engineering department is small enough to make friends with everyone.

You also start with three weeks of PTO, and a company holiday lasting 5-7 business days around the new year.

    Cons

Pushing for changes to any product is pretty difficult. Rentrak has problems with scaling, and introducing new technologies to help with that is an uphill battle.

People on the DevOps team tend to work very long hours to keep the company up and running.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your engineers for new ideas. You hire the best and the brightest, and it's a shame to waste their talents.

I have been working at Rentrak full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Generous PTO and holiday time off. Game rooms, Movie passes, and in company movie rentals. Lunch brought in, Company sponsored teams for Hood to Coast, annual golf game. Lots of growth and opportunities. Friendly Peers. Casual environment.

    Cons

Compensation could be a little better, unless you are a favorite it can be hard to receive recognition for going above and beyond (extra tasks, extra hours, volunteering projects ect..)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play favorites. There is a lot of hidden talent among you that you may not be giving enough attention to.

I have been working at Rentrak full-time

    Pros

Great people, competitive benefits, a week off in December for the holidays

    Cons

Poor management, backwards HR policies and little regard for employee opinion, little respect for work-life balance (expectation that work always comes first)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really listen to what your employees are saying and go out of your way to make improvements based on their feedback. Don't just dismiss their comments right away.

I have been working at Rentrak full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There is some loyalty to the careers of the majority of workers. Free movies, game-rooms, and free professional sports tickets are nice perks.

    Cons

The location of the office hurts the circulation of best software practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company's executives should build more balanced software teams with focused strategies.

I worked at Rentrak full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good benefits, positive executive team. Most execs and mid management are great and support professional growth and work-life balance.

    Cons

Lame location, unknown company future plans. Shaky future - they compete with industry strong holder and have not excelled as planned. They will not likely ever be a hugely successful company but will not fold either. The goal is most likely to be bought.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent, trust lower level associates.

I have been working at Rentrak

    Pros

The developer community at Rentrak is great. Everyone is good at what they do, almost everyone is great at it. The problems tend to be interesting and dealing with massive amounts of data forces everyone to think about performance and code quality all the time. For most teams 40 hour work weeks is the standard with very little deviation except in emergency situations.

    Cons

The internal source code control and site deployment strategies are not at all what they should be. Sometimes upper management can start to micromanage things a bit too much. The coffee is terrible. The building is far away from everything interesting in Portland and the only food around is a lunch truck with a habit of being poisonous or expensive fast food.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to figure out what their priorities are and stick by them. Being beholden to clients' whims can be profitable but is not good for developer morale.
