    Pros

Rentrak Engineering (which means the IT group that works in the TV and Video on Demand businesses) has turned into an awesome place to be (years ago I heard it wasn't great). Here are some of the positive changes that have happened in the last 3 years: The bad managers have all been removed from IT. New managers are great. There are some incredibly smart/talented people that work in IT and the hiring bar is high. Training budgets have grown enormously -- now managers work with you to find training to help your career Salary ranges have been published and continuously increase faster than inflation Engineering management is very employee centric -- now employees rate their bosses and the top IT leadership treats those surveys seriously Tons of new technology has been brought in to help modernize the environment -- Jira, Hipchat, AngularJS, Tempo, Zephyr, Bitbucket, Sumologic, etc. Slowly the old code is being refactored. It is awesome to work for a big data SaaS company that is working in an interesting space (measuring what people watch on TV)... as opposed to insurance or something. Perks have dramatically increased -- free cereal, pb & j, sodas, video games, the list goes on and on (like free onsite massages, or free movies on opening night, or big employee parties, or etc). New Engineering offices in downtown Portland have opened up and were designed by technologists for technologists .. awesome spaces to work in! Rentrak has a ton of cash in the bank ($80 mil?) and is a 30 year old public company -- so it has job security -- but it feels like a start up.

    Cons

There is a large codebase and a complicated business to learn. Rentrak is growing quickly, so there is always more work to do than people to do it (but they keep hiring so that's cool).

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, respect the engineers, and maybe lift a bit off the accelerator... Continue to stay ahead of the pack.

    Pros

Rentrak is the best software development and Big Data company in Portland. They gather information from all over the entertainment world, and process, analyze, and report it to all the players in the industry. The software development team is world class.

    Cons

There is a lot of pressure to produce results quickly. Sometimes the senior/executive management seems disconnected from the work of those of us in the trenches.

    Advice to Management

Stay more connected to the day-to-day. Even lower-level management seems separated from the details of the work.

    Pros

Rentrak is a great place to work. You work on interesting problems with cool data and awesome people. Management treats employees with respect. Even C level officers are happy to make time to discuss ideas and projects with engineers. The work environment is fantastic, with great fringe benefits. The people are amazing; the whole of IT has brilliant people who are also very friendly and willing to help. Excellent work life balance. Good perks for Senior Engineers and higher. Senior management has done an excellent job moving the company with the market and anticipating where business needs to go.

    Cons

Salary and benefits are only adequate, though they've both been improving lately. 401(k) is OK. 3 weeks of PTO (to start) includes your sick time. Medical was slightly below what I'd expect. There's a fair amount of issues related to being a rapidly growing company. Expanding bureaucracy and change issues. While those are annoying, they are at least being addressed by management.

    Advice to Management

You hire top notch people, spend the money and resources to keep them. Work harder towards making systems that should be legacy into actual legacy systems. Software Development is dramatically slowed by the mountain of legacy code. Longer term strategic development in engineering would really pay dividends. Try to streamline the bureaucracy a bit.

    Pros

Great Company interesting problems great work environment employees have lives and are no just bound to work. I really like it, I can't say much for the culture at the NY office but Portland is great. I am an intern and being able to ask the dumb questions is a big deal for me, the people there are a great help and always down to help me. I think the people their are some of the most friendly people to work with. Would recommend this company to my friends in a heartbeat.

    Cons

I don't really see any sort of cons to working at Rentrak I really enjoy the work-life balance and just about everything I think there is a lot of room for personal growth at Rentrak. You should take everything I say with a grain of salt though I am just an intern and perhaps haven't seen all there is it see.

    Pros

It's an exciting company "inventing new science" in audience measurement. I get to work with many smart, engaged, enthusiastic people every day.

    Cons

We are faced with many marketplace pressures and have to work above and beyond to get the job done. Prioritization can be a challenge.
