    I have been working at Responsys part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Decent work life balance

    Cons

    - Lacks climate for innovation, Politics galore
    - Limited career development and learning opportunities
    - Too much focus internally, product development slow, frozen and jerky, way too much time spent building band aid solutions that really dont inspire
    - Employees score high on arrogance and less on smartness or ease to work with
    - Non-tech savvy customers and sales organization
    - Archaic technology stack to work with
    - Stingy benefits, no free food, gym, miserly 401k plans

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Seriously consider the neighborhood you are part of, what is your value propostition in the silicon valley for a prospective employee to come and work for. Neither a technology powerhouse nor a thought leader necessarily with a culture that stifles innovation is a bad recipe to attract top talent

    Pros

    Location of office. Enjoyed other program manager relationships. There are a few people in Senior management roles that are 'real.'

    Cons

    Not being heard. Management doesn't have good training to manage. Managers party with subordinates. This is an entry level position in the Seattle office. Lots of working on weekends and nights. Started to feel robotic.

    Listen and side with your subordinates. You will get more respect.

    Spaghetti Infrastructure, no clear plans to fix, would rather firefight & churn employees

    Pros

    Co-workers generally very competent if not socially adept, due to slightly above average compensation, closeness to public transit, and reasonably affordable housing in immediate area. HR team above average to work with as well. Company is stable financially. Probably would be OK to work here if you're not involved in the support of the infrastructure (sales, marketing, etc.).

    Cons

    Management team with a couple of exceptions is a nightmare. Lack of respect, immature behavior, and overall inability to rectify the on-going infrastructure problems resulting in operations staff having to work like dogs just to keep production up. 8hr + maintenance windows averaging every other weekend. No clear direction from management. Infrastructure problems laid at feet of current staff, when true problem is an architectural design that is not scalable. High turn-over rate of IT staff means playing constant catch-up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Step back and take a look at the staff churn-fest and address the underlying problem. Set an EOL for the current app & infrastructure and hire the staff necessary to buy & build a sustainable infrastructure in parallel with current production.

    Pros

    Compensation is fairly OK if you negotiate upfront, people are fair and open with exception of management, growing company-may be great if you are good to analyze companys potential and financial growth

    Cons

    High handedness of management in day to day affairs, impersonal behavior by people in management, politics in a small company, bad project and time management, lack of adherence to standard practices, arrogance adamancy and lack of commitemnt to change and fix internal issues, disregard to interpersonal ethics, no review policy. Company seems to have resistance to think big picture and intolerant to any suggestions

    The upper management may be good and leading the company towards better things but the management closer to individual contributors are building blocks and should not be ignored at the cost of development towards acquiring new prospects/customers in the market. Company requires an overhaul to grow big

    Pros

    The pay is pretty good and the benefits were okay. For a while it looked like things were going in the right direction from a technology level, but that stopped being true some time ago. One of the biggest and best things about Responsys was the momentum it gathered while outstripping all the competition. The real question is going to be whether Responsys can continue that in the face of poor planning, bad management and rising costs. If they can, Responsys will emerge dominant in the email marketing space, and its competition should fear the advantages it will come up with next.

    Cons

    The biggest problem has got to be communication. Management doesn't seem to think it's important to communicate to underlings, and worse, don't tend to give anything closely resembling honest feedback to those who need it. Furthermore, nobody in Human Resources wants to step up and come up with a consistent set of performance guidelines or standards for having those difficult conversations with employees. It is too bad, because dead wood and a lack of communication are going to drive all of the good people out of the job and into the welcoming arms of a booming and growing technical job market.

    Take a good long look at middle to upper management, replace it as needed, and don't be afraid to fire and forget.
