Former Employee - Sales in San Francisco, CA
Former Employee - Sales in San Francisco, CA

I worked at Revel Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Company just raised 100 million
Company just made a deal with Intuit to change out QuickBooks POS to Revel POS
Company rumored to have larger deals in the pipe line which I did not believe but now seeing the news.

This company's leadership is truly amazing, for any leader to get private equity to back them with 100m is amazing. Note I have been in the business of funding and VC's money is way easier then private equity money. Lisa you are amazing keep it up I will not be doubting your ablities anymore! Hope you can rehire me.

    Cons

A lot of neg reviews on Glassdoor which got me looking at other companies in the first place.
Must live in San Francisco because commuting is a hassle as I lived 45 mins east.
A lot of rumors do float around the office but what office does not have rumors. I have been hearing a lot of the Dictator comments about the CTO but not sure that is a bad thing or not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you do as it is truly amazing what you have achieved. If I only have seen what you were doing I think I would of stayed. Please communicate more your plans so the employees know where the company is headed. This is why I left so instead of hearing the news about what the amazing accomplishments we are doing give the employees the light at the end of the tunnel early. Motivate us.

    Pros

Friendly culture, close knit team, everyone contributes something great, team really cares about each other. You really feel like your coworkers are your friends. Fairly flat org structure. Great parties. Lots of challenges but fun to work on. Its great to work on a product that is very meaningful .

    Cons

f you require a lot direction and/or micromanagemen it may not be the best fit. The team trusts you to make things happen after initially putting you in the right direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going. I love the team. Communicate to the team more with all hands meetings.

    Pros

They are great at promoting from within if you prove yourself! As a very fast pace growing company, there is great opportunity for anyone that raises a hand to take on extra responsibility. It is a very fun place to work but people also get their work done. People who do well are extremely motivated and hungry. Revelers are fun, down-to-earth people, humble, and we have great team parties and events.

    Cons

The office is about quite a commute for me so that is a draw back. Like any startup in a hot space, you must be comfortable with uncertainty. If you can't learn new features and new systems quickly it may not be a good fit. Revel is starting to feel more like a big company which is good because its becoming more structured although some departments still need more structure. Unfortunately its no longer a company where you know everyone by name.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I’d love to see more career guidance and mentor-ship. I think it would be great to have more all hands meetings and more trainings. Get a bigger building as the walls are shrinking here in SF.

    Pros

The environment and culture are amazing. I’ve met some of my best friends here. The company does very interesting work. You fee like your work is relevant when you work here because of the nature of the company's work. The people are nice and down to earth. I like how it’s a real product that will help people. You learn a lot while working here.

    Cons

People are assigned a lot of work and the clients are very demanding. Dealing with small business owners that are very price conscious can be difficult. Sometimes it gets very hot in the office and it can be hard to get work done when the AC is broke, but I know its being fixed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get Air Con fixed. Raise more money so we can expand faster

I have been working at Revel Systems

    Pros

The whole industry is copying Revel which tells me that Revel is in the lead. Join a company that is changing the way people are experiencing commerce. Vision is one of the things upper management does have. Lets think about it. They have taken the company from 0 to over 25 million in revenue. Revel is a profitable business. How many companies in the valley can say they make a profit in less then 4 years?

    Cons

people that don't believe in the company are still around. Fire them faster.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Professional growth is supported by senior management when aligned with company direction. I feel valued by my manager and senior management. I never have a boring day at work and thrive because I am provided the flexibility to own projects and solve problems! The consistent flow of innovation coming out of engineering is mind blowing. Very good benefits/perks for a small company.

    Cons

Given this is a true start up/ small growth company, it is not for everyone. If you function best in a stable, static environment and/or need a very clear directives to work from, you would not be happy at Revel. As with other start ups I have worked at, there aren't many others performing the same function so I can't truly be off-grid for very long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look into adding a 401k plan.

    Pros

    170 employees and growing fast,
work hard but as the song goes "work hard, play hard" is our motto here at Revel.
I just moved to SF office and I love it here. So much to do in this city and I am grateful that Revel is giving me a chance to succeed in life.
Cool toys to play with all the time.
Whole staff on support is always helping one anther and it is great team work here.

    Cons

Revel POS keeps changing all the time, so it is hard to stay up and up on all of the features.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Delegate more and get more senior management as you are working yourselves to hard. I see the CTO running all over the world and he needs help.

    Pros

This company is worth a lot and the faster people understand that the faster people will realize what the founders are doing. I wonder if any of the bad reviews came from people that got fired? I have a lot of respect for the founders and what they have pulled off is amazing! With square taking a dive in the press Revel is finally coming into the light even more. I noticed the buzz around the office is building into something amazing. People are saying the three letter word a lot more (IPO). In our last company meeting the founders said they are taking Revel to IPO. I believe they will do it to.

    Cons

Only lunch Monday, Wednesday Friday, they should have it every day catered.
Lots of work but I guess I am not here for vacation
Some times have to work on the weekends

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the great work and keep hiring good people we need them.

Incredible product with unique angle on market

Unlimited opportunity for increased responsibility and growth

Management is accessible and encourages employees to innovate and create change

    Cons

The company has grown faster than certain systems, so there's a lot of work to be done! But that's the reason I love being here. The opportunity to build and create what didn't previously exist.

    Pros

Extremely grateful for getting this position. After working in the banking industry I see what the cool factor in tech is. Unlimited PTO, work from home, stock options, catered meals and health benefits are some of the biggest perks I have experienced so far. Having a super cool manager and coworkers compound that. This is a successful and growing company that allows you to speak out and make decisions on things that are usually made on your behalf in other companies. Also located at a great downtown location. This company is growing at a fast rate with a solid outlook.

    Cons

Working in operations I had first hand knowledge of the issues the company was facing, which was that the program was buggy. Within a few short months Revel hired more QA and developers which released consecutive builds within a short time that made this program clean. This group is now building upon the software to include more perks and useful material for the customer.

Working for a new company requires the employee to be really good. The resulting turnover for the sales team was high for awhile due to this. Currently there is a new Sales Manager that is bringing stability by hiring great people and coaching them appropriately which in turn is increasing revenue for the company. Keep it up!
