Good entry level job, hard to move up. No commission for sales.

    Territory Manager (Current Employee)

ProsGreat benefits: Company Car, Free Gas, Lots of Vacation, 401K Matching, Medical/Dental/Vision, Short term disability benefits, etc.

ConsCompany is slow to change procedures that aren't working well. The workload and expectations are totally dependent upon who your direct manager is.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave HQ decision makers spend more time with TM's in order to better understand what is going on at retail.

My RJ Reynolds Experience 5 years

    Territory Manager (Current Employee)

ProsEasy Job with decent salary after you put in the time. This job is cake. You pretty much get paid decent to drive around and bs with people.Put up with management once a month and that's it.
Pretty much have a guaranteed base bonus every year even if you half ass it.
    Company Car, benefits.

ConsManagement is pretty awful. They are all brainwashed into thinking an old way of thinking and they push that on everyone else. Even younger management is brainwashed into it. You will only get promoted if you are in a Urban Market.
Management preaches 1 thing and expects another.
They try to make the marketing and sales of tobacco products rocket science.
No matter how much you grow you assignment and increase market share it does not matter. If you are not on the succession list you will not get a high achieves rating. Getting on succession list only happens if you are in larger market and completely suck some ass.
Division management really is useless. I am not sure what they're roll is. It is supposed to be to develop and move reps up and ge them promoted but they all act like a babysitter.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure it out. I mean really figure it out. Let your reps do their thing. You have hired a ton of smart outgoing fresh out of college students. Don't stifle them or keep them from using their smarts and intelligence.
Get out of your old way of thinking. Your merchandising tactics are completely out of control. You get an inch and take a mile. You still haven't figured it out yet that merchandising does not sell your product or increase market share. It is probably the least important aspect of the tobacco industry and you treat it like it's the most important/

    Territory Manager II (Current Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsCompany car, decent pay, decent health benefits

ConsConstantly pushing programs that benefit the company only. Very political and favortism is a large part of this company

Advice to Senior ManagementResearch proper management styles. This company promotes those that brown nose and say the right things at the right times. When it comes to consitently doing your job well, i feel that management over looks this aspect and promotes those that they get along with.

Company with no future and leadership

    Senior Manager (Current Employee)
    Winston-Salem, NC

ProsGood salary, benefits, and community to live in.

ConsNo future, no leadership. The current management is caretakers; the cigarette volume continues to decline the management is hoping the smokeless business will offset the decline in the cigarette volume. For the senior management to continue to receive their bonuses they will need to continue squeeze cost and that translates to continue to outsource and eliminate jobs. The only hope is for British American Tobacco to take the company private when the ownership restrictions from the merger expire.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep squeezing the cost and eliminate as many people as you need to make the stock an attractive purchase.
