    Pros

    The pay is above average for similar jobs elsewhere and if you make it to a management position the bonuses are awesome.

    Cons

    Everybody knows that working for a tobacco company in a declining industry is not the best, but hey, they pay pretty well. Senior management is more involved in politics than anything else. Most often than not they reward the wrong behavior (politics vs. performance). They just got rid of 40% of the salaried employees in Winston Salem. Sure enough they kept some of the worst managers I've ever seen in my 15 years of professional experience.

    Advice to Management

    Get down to work. Make the tough desicions and look at your consumers and your brands.

    Pros

    The pay that RJ Reynolds offers is good and so are the benefits.

    Cons

    Reynolds has a very unfair promotion process. People are not promoted on their performance, but instead they are promoted on personal favors and personal friendships with management.

    Advice to Management

    My suggestion would be to interview for promotions instead of letting management chose their friends over hard working employees.

    Pros

    Creative work environment. Very casual and supportive of work family balance. Good salary and benefits packages. Not many places that will pay for 100% of medical and dental, but I guess they should as it is a smoking environment.

    Cons

    This company is filled with politics. Many employees are mediocre at their jobs and very petty.

    Advice to Management

    Reward true performers and truly live the vision. You already do 80% of the time kick it up a notch and take it to 100%.

    Pros

    -great benefits package -Pay is ok for your first career opportunity -paid vacation and time off -company car/gas card -ompany CPU -cell phone allowance -home internet allowance -fortune 500 company -experienced co-workers are very educated about company (most of them smoke a great deal though) -overnight travel occasionally (average 1-2 times a month)

    Cons

    -long after work hours (i.e.. administrative duties on top of a 8-10/hr day in the field -some territory are too big and cover areas where there is absolutely nothing...(do not accept postions where you don't want to be...they will offer another position minutes later) location location location -senior mgmt only promotes the good ole boys -for your salary the work load may not be worth it... -mgmt will fault you for there mistakes in communication -make sure you are content with working for a controversial company!

    Advice to Management

    decrease work load offer better compensation since ASC was purchased...come on the work load has doubled for same salary! offer better training

    Pros

    Great salary plus relocation, low cost of living. Other interns are good and your managers really want you to succeed. They take the law and their corporate social responsibility very seriously.

    Cons

    Salary not high enough to compensate the bad reputation you get when you look for a full time job. The decision to hire for full time is arbitrary and based on superficial perceptions and not your work, upper management sees you as extra work and don´t really care for your future. The industry is highly regulated and there are a lot of things you won´t do or learn because they are illegal for this industry plus on the first weeks everyone treats you like you are stupid just because you don´t know every minuscule detail of their laws and regulations.

    Advice to Management

    Face it, not many people want to work for Big Tobacco you need to give more of your time and make an extra effort $$$$ to attract candidates, at least be respectful of the time an effort that an intern puts on the job.

    Good Salary and Benefit required to attract and hold employees

    Cons

    Good old boy environment, no future industry in decline, does not have the initiative or capability to take on #1 in the industry.

    Promote based on capability not pedigree

    Pros

    Salary was great and advancement for hard-working individuals was available. Benefits were fantastic and PTO allowances were outstanding. Plus, the travel and expense accounts were fantastic.

    Cons

    After the RJR merger in 2002 most employees expected the worst, however a CEO was brought in who fully understood what made the company great. However, after 7 years at the post, he was run off because he (allegedly) did not want to move back to North Carolina and take on the role of Reynolds American's CEO puppet. Due to that, in 2009, the current CEO, NB, was brought on from his most recent failure with GFI (an international wing of RJR/RAI that took care of SFNTC's international groups along with other RJR/RAI brands). Within just three months, the new CEO made some drastic changes that completely demoralized the employees and destroyed the culture of the organization. It is not clear, but NB either orchestrated or was forced to carry out the will of the powers that be at RJR/RAI, and removed the employees who felt that they were tasked with preserving the culture and spirit that made SFNTC a great company to work for. After that, as they say, it all began to go downhill. As it stands right now, according to peers still involved in the organization, RJR/RAI took the most incompetent employees to Winston-Salem and left the good ones to rot.

    Advice to Management

    Look yourself in the mirror every morning and ask yourself if you are proud of what you have done to what was once one of the best places to work in New Mexico. Was it worth it?

    Pros

    Good salary, benefits, and community to live in.

    Cons

    No future, no leadership. The current management is caretakers; the cigarette volume continues to decline the management is hoping the smokeless business will offset the decline in the cigarette volume. For the senior management to continue to receive their bonuses they will need to continue squeeze cost and that translates to continue to outsource and eliminate jobs. The only hope is for British American Tobacco to take the company private when the ownership restrictions from the merger expire.

    Advice to Management

    Keep squeezing the cost and eliminate as many people as you need to make the stock an attractive purchase.

    Constantly pushing programs that benefit the company only. Very political and favortism is a large part of this company

    Advice to Management

    Research proper management styles. This company promotes those that brown nose and say the right things at the right times. When it comes to consitently doing your job well, i feel that management over looks this aspect and promotes those that they get along with.
