I worked at Reynolds American full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent salary and benefits. At times way to political which causes people to go along for the sake of survival. Work environment improved for employees over the years to make it attractive to stay.

    Cons

Challenging high performance culture to an excess. Management never ever satisfied with employee performance even in years where you left it all on the field and gave till it hurt your personal life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Improve middle management communication skills

I have been working at Reynolds American full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-Opportunities for upward mobility if you are willing to RELOCATE and put in the work to get there.
-Work Hard, Play Hard Company culture (if you're into that)
-Developing Talent is highly valued... this company will invest in you!
-All promotions are within the RAI talent pool (outside RAI hires are rare)
    -Benefits are fairly good (Vehicle/GAS, 401K, Health/Dental).

    Cons

-little opportunity to be creative. Much of the work is execution and robotic based. Unfortunately, the job can get somewhat monotonous and boring.
-inconsistency at entry level manager due to inexperienced manager's. Some manager's are excellent, some are horrible. In my opinion, much of this is due to RAI's "fast-track" strategy with succession candidates.
-Some bureaucracy (like any other fortune 500).
-Work Environment is primarily at Gas Stations and Convenience Stores... not exactly a glamorous work site.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people the opportunity to share new ideas, practice creativity and innovation. The Tobacco Transformation you are trying to construct may be right under your nose.

I have been working at Reynolds American

    Pros

Great benefits, company car. I've had one really great manager and one really bad. So much of the job depends on who your boss is since that is your main contact.

    Cons

You will have no control over where you live. Employees that want to advance are given very little say in where they are relocated to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Post job openings and allow employees to apply for promotions in areas they are interested in.

I worked at Reynolds American full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The package is good (pay, car, phone etc) and work can be fun. Most co-workers are really good and promotion is possible (I was promoted after 16 months during a time when promotions were "rare").

    Cons

Some managers are micromanagers to the extreme. Your work week will never be 40 hours unless you stay a Territory Manager for life. Best candidates not always promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take away relocation as part of promotion and you will finally be able to promote the best talent instead of just the most flexible.

    Pros

Great benefits, Good starting pay, and for the most part great team members

    Cons

Lots of "equal opportunity" management, promotions take forever at least 18 months, micromanaged, Managers act as private investigators to and will ride your territory w/out you knowing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the right person for the mgmt positions, and treat your territory managers right they are what drives the company

I have been working at Reynolds American full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

RAI Services Company provides excellent compensation and benefits.

    Cons

RAISC only wants employees who are certified in their field and let employees with 20+ years of experience go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many years of experience and loyalty to the company are leaving the company. New employees who are hired do not possess the loyalty and dedication of the long time employees. This company will end up with more "chiefs" than "indians" and no loyalty and dedication it once had. The newer employees do not have a reason to remain with the company as the salaries are much lower now than in the past. Management is more task oriented than people oriented. This company used to be a great company to work for, and the culture has changed to the point where each employee is looking to "step on the toes" of the other employee to get ahead.

Current Employee - Territory Manager III

I have been working at Reynolds American full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility, Company Car, and Okay salary once you reach TM III. Great opportunities to meet people throughout the company at national meetings. The company spares know expense at national meetings.

    Cons

The biggest Con is the incompetent DM's they have managing you. In order to grow as an individual you need managers that will coach you to be your best. Instead these DM's are too busy covering their butts that they micro-manage and lose focus of the company culture. This company has limited advancement opportunities and its difficult to live a comfortable lifestyle with the compensation provide depending on your assignment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start coaching employees to advance within their desired area and stop micro managing. This is tobacco not rocket science!
