I have been working at Reynolds American

    Pros

    Good salary and benefits package

    Cons

No room for advancement unless you network correctly. Promotions are based on knowing the right people rather than competence. Higher taxes and FDA regulation will eventually change what the current job position is drastically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove all previously Brown & Williamson executives from CEO on down, and fix the massive favoritism within the organization. Fixing both of those issues would prevent the company from being used as a place for individuals to simply "move up the ladder" and then leave quickly; as well as prevent the company from rotting within due to low morale.

You can not rely on constant turnover within the organization and still keep the morale. The morale is tanking, and tanking hard... as well as share.

I have been working at Reynolds American

    Pros

Decent Pay, Company Car (free gas), decent benefits, good starting job for a young adult

    Cons

No Future due to Legislative issues, Most management is not worried about YOU, they are worried about THEM or the share holder of RAI. RJRT management employees have fallen into the trap of " I did this, so what have you done". People are promoted for ability to relocate vs. knowledge/effort/success. RJRT is becoming a "meat factory" comprable to the insurance companies. Management is "forcing" ideas down the throat of the industry, due to the declining market. The philosophy @ RJRT is "it is what it is", few have answers, and the ones that do are not permitted to speak up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good Luck, your philosophy's are broken. The only constant is change, whilst change is good, the level of orginization and moral are suffering, due to the lack of ANY consistency. Even YOUR philosophy's change every six months. You need to develop a clear and consistent VISION, that is applicable and profitable. Quit talking the talk, and start walking the walk or SOM/ Volume will continue to decline, and your brands will not be able to be revived.

    Pros

You can take vacation whenever you want. Good place to start if you are right out of school. The company is desperate for young people to engage young smokers face-to-face. The company will embrace you and promote you quickly.

    Cons

VERY political. I could go on all day here. They treat everybody, employees, customer, consumers, like crap. They think by saying something it makes it so (we are ethical, passionate.....etc) They are anything but. Senior management has no clue. I was with them for 21 years, and the company lost share every year. Like playing for the Cubs- lose EVERY time. The company is hemorraging cash, and will probably soon be bought by a competitor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    This company is beyond repair.

I have been working at Reynolds American full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Salary and company car, meager benefits, some great co-workers and managers (very few.) Nice to not have to be around managers all the time.

    Cons

Terrible work/life balance, constant reports, time wasting approach to sales, micro-managing, in-fighting amongst teams, loads of lies and misdirection in a so-called transparent company. Main office and company's original spirit and ethics are a shell of what they once were. No support from RJRT since they eliminated the HR and legal departments. Favoritism, attitude, disconnect, and inexperience from managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop spewing your team ethos when you only think of the people at the top. You have demoralized and destroyed a once great company. Keep looking out for yourselves, since that is what you are good at anyway. Just get the merger over with and stop trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. Beware of karma - what goes around comes around.

    Pros

For New Mexico the pay is good. Benefits are alright. Co-workers are the best part. VP is good. President is the best but a figurehead. Tobacco is the very best. There are some very talented people working in this company.

    Cons

Little trust in upper managment no matter how they try to dress it up. Politics are despicable. Watch out for the overly ambitious but mediocre talent judging others and holding your fate in their hands but not all are like that. some very intelligent people also hold your fate in their hands. But lots of Ego-driven and obsessed with heirarchy. Some real micro-managers. Not enough great workers get promoted. Why? Not from RJR? Not able to relocate? Aren't BFFs with certain people? Not the Reynolds style? So many of the employees are tyring to figure out how they can get out without losing everything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think of the entire company as one big team instead of ELT, MLT and then the peons. Bring us all together. Understand the true meaning of transparency. Support genuine talent development. TEAM TEAM TEAM

    Pros

The money and company car, that's it

    Cons

IN MY OPINION - no room for advancement unless you are a manager's pet, good looking, played an instrument, drank with the good old boys after hours / Get ready to live in your suitcase / Politics here consumed almost every decision made / Graded by a so called "panel" at the end of the year, which you don't hear about until weeks later, where managers sit there and bash you and you can't defend yourself until after your review is given / Slowly and painfully having the original history of the company gone and becoming RJ Reynolds.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people like human beings / Treat people based on their achievements, not for who they hang out with, or if they may seem a little different

    Pros

    Decent salary
    Company car
    Nice benefits package

    Cons

VERY poor middle management / leadership
No standard of goals for employees to achieve advancement
    Total popularity contest
Those who are the laziest but best suck-ups get promoted every time regardless if a more tenured employee would like advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

TRAIN DIVISION MGRS on HOW to be a GOOD LEADER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give CLEAR and CONCISE standards for EVERYONE, not just the DM's pet on how to advance
Understand everyone enjoys having a life outside of RJ Reynolds

    Pros

The compensation -- that is it ... this company used to be one of the best places to work for until RJRT got involved heavily in 2007 -- and like always, big company politics change the culture and structure, to the point of no return.

    Cons

I never have given my heart and soul to a company that in the end treated me so foul. I won awards, contests, etc. here. I was considered at one time a front runner of the position. Upper Management here reminds me of being in high school. If your one of the cool kids you can be part of their clique and get a promotion regardless of your tenor, or what lack of accomplishments you have done. There have been so many promotions here were people have been here under 2 years and did not even master their current position, but because they were a "chosen one" they were deemed fit for management. Upper management loves to use words here like "networking" , "change" , and "transparent". But what makes me laugh is they make the rules and change them all the time, and exclude themselves from their own rules. My supervisors planned trips and visits in the field around night life bars, and were under the impression that rules did not imply to them, and that it was ok to say inappropriate innuendo's. Very unproffessional management was here (not sure about now -- keep hearing very inexperienced now) My boss at one time, told me you had to be part of a clique to get a promotion, and that it did not matter how good your reviews were, or what your accomplishments were. The "good old boys" network is strong here as well, loaded with favortism and politics.... If you speak up about wrong do'ers with power here -- their friends (with power) will not forgive you and hold grudges and not ever speak to you again. This is regardless weather or not being right or wrong. This company says they are a family company, but more times than not get ready to stay and sleep in a hotel, or on the road somewhere away from family. Also, when I was here the health insurance was next to awful. I could have almost paid for insurance on my own for what their costs was to insure more than one person. If you are a single person, right out of college, or in your mid 20's, and don't plan on having a life, maybe you should try here .... I never in all my years of working have seen a place turn into this result, and I have worked for much larger companies. In my opinion this is an awful place to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being hippocrites -- practice what you preach -- stop favortism and inexperienced performers getting promotions -- and please, let's stop kidding ourselves about a merger with RJRT .... The writing is on the wall !! One may read my review and say, what a bitter and disgruntled person -- that's fine ... But what about the other dozen or so reviews that have a lot of similarites to mine? Are they all wrong and disgruntled too? ... Santa Fe -- maybe you need to "change" ?!

    Pros

The lifestyle of the job is great since it allows you work independently and not have to go to an office.

    Cons

The culture is one that involves management by fear. You hear more negative than positive which is not a motivating factor.
