    Time to go?

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Newark, CA

ProsGreat and attractive benefits..there is the hook for incentives and motivation.
Great story and history of the company and where it wants to go
Great company with scientific modeling capabilities and well respected experts in fields of meteorology.

ConsTime for a reality check...Rms (N)One was a completely over ambitious gamble with no fall back plan and things are now going very wrong. Unfortunately, the same story of believing in the arrogance without any history of delivering products on time, and with any quality.. Is now haunting with very worrisome consequences.Over spending this time WILL catch up...what client will buy a product or service or a promise, why stick around with the prospect of more illusion?

Advice to Senior ManagementYou don't listen, so why would we expect you to change? This was a great company, is this what you wanted, Hemant?

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

The good, the bad, and the ugly..

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Hoboken, NJ

ProsA majority of this depends on your manager

    - A pretty fast pace work place and can learn and get things done depending on the size of your team and what you are involved in
    - Can move up quickly if people above you leave or move to another group (which happens pretty often)
    - You are given atonomy if you prove that you are an A+ employee
    - Free snacks and drinks in the kitchens
    - People in the company waste money like no other because there is no checks and balances, as long as your manager approves of it. (This can be a pro or con depending on how much you care about the company)
    - If you are in with senior management, you are set and you can almost do whatever you want and not get fired.

Cons- The same work is done over and over and over again by different groups/people and is ultimately scrapped all together in the end which wastes everyone's time
    - People move around all the time and generally are put in roles that they are not technically qualified for but since they know the right people, managers they turn a blind eye with regards to their technical skills
    - People in middle management are there not because they were "promoted" but because people above them left. They are not given formal training which causes big issues in the end.
    - There is not enough communication among different groups which causes information to be lost
    - Compensation is way below average compared to the industry
    - TOO MUCH POLITICS AT THE TOP!!!

Advice to Senior ManagementTalented people are leaving left and right and no one is really doing anything about it.. DO SOMETHING! Get your act together before everyone leaves.

Stop trying to set unachievable goals just to appease clients. Develop a backbone and learn to say no.

RMS is at an inflection point ... and is unfortunately going in the wrong direction due to politics

    Development Organization (Current Employee)
    Newark, CA

ProsVery intelligent modelers, from Stanford and Berkeley. Some very smart people in the trenches.
Been profitable for > 15 years.
Board (parent company) seems to be hands-off.

ConsPolitics has gotten very, very bad now. Too many reorganizations, one every 3 months in development organization. People who only talk, and talk well, are getting promoted, and a lot of talent is leaving. Pushy VPs taking credit for other groups's work.

Company is spending huge amount on logo change, while we are critically short of human capital in other areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of politics, else long term future is in jeopardy.
Bring back the anonymous question/answer we had on the internal website (Ask the leader).
Seriously review why attrition is so high, talk to anyone who has worked at RMS more than 3 years, and left in last 2 years -- not the perfunctory exit interview. Rather a detailed one, seeking feedback, 30 to 45 days after a person has left.

An OK experience if you are a self-started and independent worker and don't mind a HIGHLY competitive work environment

    Senior Catastrophe Modeler (Current Employee)
    Newark, CA

Pros- If you work hard and play the politics game to get your name out there, you can get good money relatively quickly
    - The work can be interesting when not bogged own by office politics

Cons- Office politics in Model Development are current terrible
    - Senior management is all scientists which is causing a problem in how to manage a company
    - HR needs to given more power to keep managers accountable, currently this lack of accountability is killing all the projects as people get enlarged egos

Advice to Senior Management- Make your employees accountable, ESPECIALLY management
    - Try an anonymous email or physical suggestions/complaints box. This could prove VERY interesting and helpful
    - Hire some people that know how to manage, not just scientists who think they know everything and don't need HR or someone else telling them they need to improve. The scientists here get all bent out of shape because they have been allowed too much lee-way and someone needs to check many of their egos [perhaps including this humble scientist's as well]

Prossmart people, flexible hours, good reputation

Conslack of clarity in management and vision, no career advancement path, VP and above mostly are hired, multiple re-orgs in the past few years

Advice to Senior Managementstart getting upward review, start being clear about decisions and communications, rather than ideas present plans to employees

Working at RMS is often frustrating and disheartening.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Newark, CA

ProsRMS has many smart people who genuinely try to get things done. The benefit package is adequate and the compensation is fair for some parts of the company. The lower down in the organization you go, the more the people try to work as a team and help each other.

ConsSenior management is often clueless when it comes to the pulse of the company. Turnover is in the double digits, which creates a constant revolving door. The consistent churn creates a nightmare for the people left as they try to keep work moving as well as train an endless parade of new employees. Sr. Management in the business as well as HR will always side with management and can not be trusted.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a critical look inside the ranks and determine who is actually there for the good of the company. Make tough decisions in evaluating performance and stick to what you say you are going to do. Be careful of discriminatory practices in hiring and promoting.

Very political place to work. Think through before you join in

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Newark, CA

Proslocation, commute, flexibility of remote working, stable company

ConsIt is very bad place to work, no respect from supervisors if you are employee. Middle management and senior management people are lacking of business goal. Most of the full time employees joined are laid off from other company or H1 people. No good technology. This company pretty much depend on H1 people , and people who has 2-5 years experience(they don't know what are they doing, finally just doing some trial and error method) , all these people are playing a lot of politics in the organization, senior managements are totally incapable to manage these people. No good architects in the company. No good technology, people are just playing politics inside the organization. I think my suggestion is think through before taking position in RMS if you are a god technical(IT programmer) person.

Advice to Senior ManagementManager needs to understand the business goal and also prove employee career path and play less politics

Niche industry. Meager chances to grow. Politics.

    Senior Risk Analyst (Current Employee)
    Noida (India)

ProsBest to learn in the field of Catastrophe modelling. start upon SQL and go advance in Excel(seriously!) in some projects. flexibility of time.

ConsLesser learning opportunities and no challenges apart from people who are a challenge! No 360 degree peer review. No recreational activities and over all employee satisfaction. Can grow if you are good at connections!

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees should be engaged in a way that they need not worry about people around making troubles in 9-6 hours! Provide forums to talk and let it be known to senior management.
