Acquired via OPNET, lost visibility

Senior Director (Current Employee)
Bethesda, MD

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWe are always provided the best technical resources, and we seem to have support to change direction for our areas. The company seemingly rewards the innovators and hard workers.

ConsPoor internal communications, as many of the engineers only find out about new products or features after public announcements - the systems to support internal technical communications do not work. There is a complete lack of mechanisms to provide feedback in products or processes, and the mechanisms used by OPNET have been removed.

There has been significant change as would be expected during an acquisition, but the attrition is killing the new teams that are being built and rebuilt. Sacking of the former OPNET leadership has killed morale, and without communications we are isolated.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvite your team to share in the future of the company and the products, as top-down decision making without communication is alienating your engineers.

Pretty good. Not terrible but not great

Systems Engineer (Current Employee)
Bethesda, MD

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time for more than 3 years

ProsManagement is good to their people. The products work well. Flexible working hours.

ConsThe OPNET acquisition and transition has been rough. Lots of people have left or been let go and that has hurt morale.

OK, but not great.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time for less than a year

ProsFree snacks, including fresh fruit, are nice to have. The company provides a lot of training opportunities, both classroom and self-directed.

ConsThe company tends to be less open than my former employer, making it harder to do my job. No tuition reimbursement (seems odd, given the training). Management talks about great benefits, but they are nothing special. Corporate pep-talks tend to emphasis marketing and sales, even to engineering staff--that is not the right encouragement for techies.

Advice to Senior ManagementLoosen up and let people do their jobs. Ditch the stock blackout period for non-management employees.

Decent Experience

Summer Software Engineering Intern (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Riverbed Technology as an intern for less than a year

ProsInterning at Riverbed was not overly stressful - I was able to choose my hours and did not feel expected to stay at work in the evenings. The location, in SF near bart, was convenient. The concepts behind their networking products were cool.

ConsI was working in SF while the majority of my team was located in Sunnyvale, so I got less direct feedback/personal interaction than I might have liked.

Riverbed is a growing company.

Member of Technical Staff (Current Employee)
Bethesda, MD

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time

ProsRiverbed employs a strong group of smart, talented engineers, and produces a number of well designed and made products. There are many opportunities to work with good people and to move products forward.

ConsRecent acquisitions of employees and products are sources of some of the opportunities, but are also sources of growing pains that are not yet resolved.

Great technology company with great support and a mangement team struggling with maintaining culture while growing.

Regional Sales (Current Employee)

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe technology that we offer our customers is high value, industry leading and is backed by a tremendous support organization and product development. WHen you represent Riverbed to the industry, it's not hype. It's great technology and a great support organization behind the technology.

ConsThere is new management, especially on the sales side in the US and this has resulted in very inconsistent culture team to team with very little senior management interraction with the field. WIth that comes consistent change in who you work with and who you report to / work for.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to having regulary sernior management participation in reviews so you can stay in touch with what is happening outside of corporate or large offices.

Riverbed is still learning how to integrate its acquisitions.

Engineering (Current Employee)
Bethesda, MD

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time for more than 10 years

ProsRiverbed is still an innovative technology company, with world-class engineers. There is much to learn and many people to learn from. The benefits are quite good, and the environment is generally healthy and open. The company is stable and continuing to try and grow, and engineers have many opportunities for career progression.

ConsRiverbed really didn't know what it was getting into when it acquired OPNET Technologies. It seems that upper management lacks the understanding of former OPNET's philosophy to be able to properly engage former OPNET. It seems to refuse to learn from them or really communicate with them. The message "sell more" doesn't resonate with engineers. The fact that all engineers have the same title more or less ("Member of Technical Staff") implies a lack of caring about their career progression. Decisions seems to be made more or less arbitrarily, with a lack of input from the majority of employees. There has been a lot of attrition since the acquisition.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop giving business-oriented presentations to engineers. Talk to them and understand what motivates them. Be more open-minded about why OPNET did things the way it did. Embrace and learn from the former culture. Be more clear about the overall business direction. Address the attrition directly. Have more technical people in management roles - less business speak, and more engineering focus. (Can the CEO explain what OPNET's software did?)
