Very poor growth opportunities, especially in the Bethesda office

Member of Technical Staff (Current Employee) Bethesda, MD

    Pros* Interesting work
    * Stable and low risk job

Cons* You can remain stuck at essentially an entry level position even after working for more than 5 years and being a very good contributor (as accepted by management)
    * Pay hikes are very poor
    * Very high levels of micro-management and very poor organization
    * There is no leader to inspire engineers
    * Every release cycle ends with supplanting engineers from multiple teams to get past the finish line. So engineers never get to stay focussed on a solution.

Advice to Senior Management* Address the cons listed above
    * Communicate frequently
    * Delegate and stop the micro-management

This is not the place I joined any more.

Director (Current Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsThe people truly are great. There are very smart and loyal people at the company. The location in SF is great and they are about to move into a new location that will be gorgeous. The technology they have is very interesting and the potential for continued growth is there.

ConsThe company is going through huge growing pains. Acquiring OPNET at the end of 2012 was not received favorably by Wall Street and just when it seems they have gotten the acquisition under control, Elliott a private equity firm in NY takes a 10.5% hold of the company. Moral is very low and there is a huge lack of communication from upper management about what this all means. It is distracting to many employees who seem to be waiting for the other shoe to drop. If you are considering a role at the company I would definitely recommend you keep a close eye on their stock and what the media has to say. Elliott is not going away and if you want to be at a company that is growing and has great positive energy this is not the place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementI wish you the best of luck. This year is going to continue to be very tough from what I can see. Communicate early and often with us and help us read between the lines so we can encourage our teams. You have brought in what appears to be some great executives in the past year. I only hope they can turn things around quickly enough!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

    Prosgood espp and RSU compensation

ConsWorst HR and IT ever! New management additions are horrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire all IT and HR management. Don't hire executives that don't fit the culture.

Company that has some of the best products but worst management .

    Tac (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGood products like WAN optimizer and load balancers.

ConsI really get surprised when I see this company gets the best working place award in silicon valley. actually out of about 10 companies I have worked with in my life, this is the worst one. there are no ethics, no human values. There were days when management denied my sick leave to take my wife to hospital. There were days when I asked for help from management and they simply were not available and tried to save their seats. I will never ever think of working with same company again. In fact, I am now afraid of working with start-ups and smaller companies due to my experience with Riverbed. Happy to be with one of the multinational company who really cares about HUMAN values and helps to grow you ethically right.
later on after leaving this company couple of years back, found that I was not alone that was literally harassed like this.
I would highly recommend you to stay away from this company.

Advice to Senior Managementget rid of your top management layer, appreciate the true human value and help employee in needs.

    Management has no clue

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsOpen door environment, provides training.

ConsManagement has no idea what they are doing. Makes false promises, no value for human capital.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue employee not just investors or market analyst.

    I am disillusioned.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe schedule is flexible. The salaries are industry-standard.
    The engineers are brilliant.

ConsThere is no bonus plan, no awards, and no recognition for top performers.
Top management is still based in San Francisco, while the talent is actually in Sunnyvale. We must commute to San Francisco to get recognition.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire managers in Sunnyvale. Weed out non-performing top management. Ensure that managers treat their employees with respect (I hear this manager shout openly at her reports). In my department, managers are making special "deals" and promoting untalented people who do them favors. Go figure!
Provide employees a chance to rate their managers anonymously.

Dwindling benefits with low regards for an engineering career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    Pros- Free snacks
    - Good health benefits

    Cons- Benefits keep getting cut
    - Bad place for an engineering career
(The only way to progress is to move to management)
    - Sales is all they care about
    - Most of engineering is kept in the dark about company/product direction
    - Remote wipe of your personal smartphone should you dare put the company e-mail on it

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease stop cutting benefits to increase profits. Treat engineers with dignity by giving them decent titles and good growth opportunities.

Worst place to work as a QA Engineer, however good place to be a system developer

QA Engineer (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGood place to have work life balance. Awesome culture. If you want to be a developer on the system side, this could be a good place to start.

ConsThis is not the right company to be a QA Engineer. Worst ever middle managers who play dirty politics , just for the sake of being in the company for "n" number of years they dont even care to listen or trust the junior or entry level engineers.
Need to follow blindly what ever developer say. No proper learning curve for QA engineers. Cant grow up easily if ur QA engineer, rather than developer where there is larger scope and people with in the development appreciate the work

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the middle level managers: Listen to the entry level engineers and talk about the problems, issues rather than avoiding it. No use of trusting higher level engineers all the time.. Biased nature of trusting people will downgrade the work style at some point of time.

Stay away if you are in HR

Talent Acquisition (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

    ProsGood Name in the industry.

Cons-Horrible management that lies to you about pay raises after 3 month reviews. Don't believe anything this company says to you about performance reviews and bonuses. I've spoken with multiple contractors that have said the same thing about the way this organization lies to their people.
-Lies told to all contractors about job growth, increase in responsibility, and visibility within the organization.
-Major attrition in HR. Nobody stays past 6 months because there is no career path at Riverbed in HR.
-Lack of response in communication from management. You can write repeadeted emails to your manager about action items discussed in past meetings, but if he doesn't feel your email is important, he will just ignore you and act like nothing ever happened.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a reason that no one stays in your recruiting organization after 5-6 months in R & D...and it isn't the contractors. Try communicating with your employees and holding yourself accountable

    Just "ok"

    Recruiter (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGreat technology, smart employees, better than great engineering team, excellent tech support team, and good health benefits (if important).

Conspoor compensation, poor career path opportunities or promotion opportunities. If one is performing well in their current position they will keep them there and hire from the outside. Tend to hire from outside vs promote from within.
