I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I came to Riverbed after a two-year stint in a large Valley software company where chaos reigned and nothing really got done unless blood or tears were spilled. At Riverbed, I found rational people who are smart and capable, working on the stuff that matters, in an environment where people help each other and care about the quality of their work. Decisions get made, people get recognized, and everyone is treated well. I joined a GREAT team under a GREAT manager, and I'm still incredibly happy nine months later.

    Cons

The company is experiencing growing pains, and people who have been here for a long time can be a bit cynical about the direction we are headed. But when 100% of industry analysts say they would recommend Riverbed to their clients (and they do), I figure our product and technology strategy is on track -- so the haters are being pretty harsh. We are also in the midst of going private, and there are a lot of people who want to know whether stock incentives and the ESPP program will be replaced with other incentives -- and I get that too -- but this is a company with a l-o-n-g track record of treating employees really well, so I for one am trusting that the company will offer all of us a reason to stay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase face-time with employees to let us know what you're working on to speed this transition. Tell employees about bit wins that demonstrate we are on track. Make sure the deal to go private protects employees, and really doesn't create a lot of pain.

    I worked at Riverbed Technology

    Pros

I was in sales, and it was the best internship I ever had. Everyone was social and treated each other with respect, and I would work in a job environment like this permanently.

    Cons

None to say at this time.

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of youthful people as well as people who've been around the industry. By "adult" I don't mean a particular age, I mean there is opportunity to take lots of responsibility and thus become a key team member. Show that you can be depended on, and others will do the same for you. It's really refreshing, and this level of mutual respect extends to excellent benefits as well.

The San Francisco office is located in a hotbed of tech companies--within a 10 minute walk are Yelp, Wikimedia, Uber, LinkedIn's new building, SalesForce's new building, etc. Tons of restaurants, 1 block to the Museum of Modern Art, & so many kinds of people with so many professions are on the street at lunchtime. The complete opposite of the sterile tech campus neighborhood which, if a 10 foot fence were added, would be indistinguishable from an ultra-max prison for the imagination!

Riverbed's products express truly new ideas which track the evolution of how wide area networks and the Internet are being used by real companies. If you want to really understand the guts of how today's networks and computing platforms actually operate, you have the opportunity here. If you want to work with very smart people in an atmosphere of trust and make a real contribution, this is the place.

    Cons

Most of Engineering resists using formal titles (except for manager, director, VP), which can make it difficult to gauge your professional progress.

The company personality is a bit understated, which might give job seekers the incorrect impression that not much is happening here. To the contrary, heavily hyped social SW isn't even 1/10 as complex and interesting as this stuff.

    Pros

Compensation is good, culture is great, office in SF so no shuttle rides needed.

    Cons

    Pros

With the recent news of the Thoma Bravo acquisition, we have the chance to really start focusing on a comprehensive strategic plan that will help get the value we have to market much more effectively. For current employees, we immediately have more of an incentive to be on this recent wave of success and remain loyal.

    Cons

Change comes with anxiety and those who get caught up in the anxiety without moving forward will probably end up being frustrated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the enthusiasm and reward the players who support you. There's a lot of talent and resources to tap into at Riverbed.

Riverbed is a great place to work. Hard working people who are very open and friendly. Work/life balance is good. Products work extremely well and generally people are very happy here.

    Cons

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Many opportunities to work cross-functionally in alignment with big customer and company initiatives. This is culturally the most frictionless environment I've ever worked in--the ethic of "git 'er done" is pervasive across all functions and in practically every person I've encountered. The pace is fast and the work is demanding, but the explicit focus here on employees from executive leadership is superior to all my previous employers.

    Cons

Very lean, IT services-wise. IT doesn't get in the way, but some of the niceties I grew accustomed to with other employers are absent here. The focus on cloud-delivered and off-the-shelf systems could definitely benefit from some integration and systems work.

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Real Growth Opportunity: In my short time at Riverbed, I've seen the following promotions of ISRs: 2 ISR Managers, 3 Commercial Inside Sales Executives, 2 Territory Field Account Executives.

Your voice is really heard: It is not every day that you can walk the halls and chat with Senior Executives and the CEO about your business and get real input or see real change based of your input.

Great Team: The Riverbed Team is Top Notch. From Engineering to Operations to Sales, there is real sense of Teamwork and working towards a common goal of success.

Benefits: Salary, Time off, Medical, Dental, 401K, ESPP are all excellent at at the top tier of what you would expect to see in the Tech Industry.

    Cons

With recent pressure from Investment Firms regarding the Acquisition of Riverbed, it has created some unnecessary FUD that we have had to work through. In most cases, this has driven our team to work even harder to deliver the great Solutions that Riverbed Offers.
