    Comfortable Job with little promise for future

    Software Engineer E1 (Former Employee) Cedar Rapids, IA

    ProsOverall, my employment here was a decent experience. As long as you can manage yourself to an extent, you will be able to find something to do to keep yourself busy. It may be just testing software, but its something to get going. Overall, the technology tends to lag behind industry but sometimes makes sense for reliability reasons. If you are looking for a comfortable job in a laid back city, this is it.

    ConsThere are certainly some managers here that should have never left their desk as an engineer. When it comes to writing code or designing a project, they are fantastic. But when it comes to management style, well, there is no management style. Over my year of full-time employment here, I was going onto my third manager due to reorgs, people leaving, etc. Also, the work given to entry level engineers, most of the time the most code you will write is some Python to automate a test.

    Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on getting better managers in place, and I think the employees will be happier.

    Solid Company with poor managers.

    ProsI am trusted to get the job done working alone. Pay is fairly competitive. Company is on a good path to sucess.

    ConsSafety issues reported to management and they take no corrective action. Management & co-workers ignore your emails, however if you ignore one of theirs you catch hell for it. Work policy only counts for some workers and not others, otherwise known as favortisim.

    Advice to Senior ManagementDon't ignore safety issues, this will cost you big when someone gets injured. Don't tell one person he has to take a day of leave to go to a doctor appt, then tell the next guy to go ahead we'll cover for you.

    Trying to Improve

    ProsTalented engineers, interesting technology, overall a company with rich history.
    Good amount of paid time off.
    Salaries OK.
    New COO, Kelly Ortberg is engaging his leadership to make a difference.
    Move to Google will help many of our IT, and sharing issues.

    ConsWork force is held to percentages, even though the company claims not to, being the sole drivers of the business model that creates the percentages, leaving the employees with no opportunity to make a change for the better.

    Whether or not you are successful at Rockwell will depend entirely on your direct manager, and their common sense, or lack of. Some lack the courage to oppose bad ideas handed down from our Directors and VPs. Far too many Directors are willing to back their colleagues bad ideas, and overlook the opportunity to make a real difference and improvements

    How seriously your ideas for improvement are taken depends totally on your job title, which is very frustrating. You will be asked for your input in Lean events, meetings, process improvement plans, and nothing will be acted on. After a while you shut down and decide not to contribute because your ideas are not valuable.

    Daily office politics are exhausting. If you can sound like you know what's going on, your fine, no one is held accountable for a good job, or bad. I have worked with many dishonest people, willing to blame others for their miss takes, and it works!

    Advice to Senior ManagementRockwell Collins needs to find a balance for the ebb and flow in todays economy and technology. Instead of the knee jerk swings we have been experiencing due to the fluctuation of stock prices.

    Eliminate green spaces and permit parking, there nothing that makes you feel more segregated than driving by many open green parking spots to park in the back lots next to the tennis courts. It forces employees without the green space privileges to create their own parking tags, or drive family members cars and park in Transit all day undetected. Or at the very lest, please add one covered walk way from each back parking lot. I have fallen on the ice, as I know many others have. We live in Iowa, with more bad weather days than good. It's not the walk that bothers me it's the inclement weather.

    Rockwell Collins charge back business model leaves it's internal departments starved and fighting for useful current marketing assets and materials. With each department budget tightening, all visible costs are under scrutiny. A charge back department can not share assets with another department without charging to do so. This practice ensures valuable assets will be unusable, creating self serving metrics proving other departments don't want or need these assets and materials. This couldn't be further from the truth. We have great products, legacy products, talented engineers, cut these assets loose and let the world know what we Have! Sale it!

    Do you realize how many people don't know Collins brought GPS to the world? The company's heritage is a marketing plus, and should be focused on. Many of our historical assets have not been taken care of, or thoughtlessly thrown out in 5s events. Whole data bases to pull assets from archives and warehouses, have been boxed up and sent to a warehouse, leaving these historical pieces unsearchable.

    Ok company if you want a job.

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Cedar Rapids, IA

    ProsStable job. I feel that companies sales department does a good job. It is easy to transfer departments. Some of the products technology is really cutting edge. Average pay is good and for the Cedar Rapids area you will feel very comfortable.

    ConsAs the products technology is cutting edge, the tools are most defiantly not. Be prepared to use office tools in all the wrong ways. I have worked at many different companies much smaller and much bigger than Rockwell Collins and I have never seen such a culture that favors home brewed tools. Many of the "more experienced" engineers have never worked outside the company have little interest in learning about new and better techniques in the industry. I have seen million dollar investments dumped into home made tools that could have been better spent on real off the shelf solutions that would have been more flexible for only pennies on the dollar. For example many companies write and review software why must Rockwell Collins use a custom review tool?

    As for the cutting edge technology. Good luck ever getting on any of those projects. I have been trying for over five years.

    The pay is comfortable, but it might not be for long. For the year end reviews Management is forced to create a bell curve for their employees and compare them to other management teams in the department. So if a manager has 5 employees two will be graded higher than normal, two will be below normal, and one will be average. You are given a magical number which is then tossed into a pool with other managers magical numbers. After much politics and fighting a weighting number is developed to apply to your magic number and now you have your pay raise. The average pay raise being about 3% which places many engineers just at the rate of inflation. So technically many engineers will be making less money the next year.

    If you want good projects you really need to be buddies with your manager, and play the politics game. In "most" departments virtue and skills are not nearly as important as political positioning and presentation. Managers really vary in personality and age. If you want to advance your career be prepared to to match and understand your managers style You may need to learn how to drink more and party, or attend the correct church.

    Advice to Senior ManagementI see internal initiatives to get around political aspects of the company, and from a engineering perspective this does help with moral. But, even the latest "think of a good idea and we'll fund it" concept is flawed with resource issues that management will not help with. I think this leads to the bad habit of custom tools that makes an Engineers life so hard. My suggestion to management is to trust the engineers instincts more. Especially trust the more experienced engineers that have seen better and cheaper ways from other parts of the industry.

    Great Company Unstable at times

    Good company...if you are in Cedar (corporate headquarters)

    ProsPay and benefits are very competitive (company has stronger benefits than most, and a good bonus program that all employees participate in), company tries to be employee focused, focus on integrity, diversity

    Cons"Old school" management style can be oppressive (much more stick than carrot on a daily basis), politics are huge, offsite locations will always be secondary.
