Rockwell Collins offers a great work environment, opportunities for advancement and a friendly, team-oriented atmosphere

Test Technician (Current Employee) Manchester, IA

ProsFlexible work hours, three weeks of vacation accrues from day 1, good benefit options at reasonable prices, 401k plan w/company match, health/dental/vision benefits from day 1, employees are accountable for their own success, high ethical standards.

ConsNo more vacation until after 15 years of service, mid-level leaders don't follow through with actions and things fall through the cracks -- good plans don't always come to pass, can be high-stress as high performance is expected along with good quality, even when workers are newly trained in a new position.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe willing to spend the money to make changes suggested by employees, when it comes to quality and performance. Many improvements could be made to documentation and equipment, but we are told that it's not in the budget and it never gets done. Follow-up on lean/quality actions is lacking. Many projects are started and never finished or are re-prioritized. Some mid-level leaders are not properly trained in project management; the project doesn't proceed in the proper fashion and there's no follow-up, so employees end up falling back into old habits, actions never get completed and we end up "re-creating the wheel" every couple of years.

I'm experienced and here is the best collection of engineering talent I've been around.

PR Systems Engineer (Current Employee) Cedar Rapids, IA

ProsHigh concentration of Industry experts and really smart engineers.
Great place for challenging design work - some really interesting technology and product development that makes a difference.
Opportunity to work with customers (and travel) internationally.

ConsI commute 30min so I can live in Iowa City for culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe careful with adjusting the overall benefits package. This place relies on attracting top junior engineers. I'm an outlier - most of the technical and business leadership started here in engineering.

    Aviation Geeks' Dream Engineering Job

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Wilsonville, OR

ProsFull of talented, passionate people. Lots of people have been there 10, 20+ years. I think everyone is there because they love what they do. A culture of excellence and improvement. Generous pay and benefits.

ConsAs with any company in the aviation industry there is a lot of process. This is as it should be for the safety required. I'm rather type-A myself and don't mind it, but the amount of process is not for everyone.

    Excellent place to work

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Cedar Rapids, IA

ProsRockwell Collins is a leader in avionics and is absolutely the place to be if you are interested in the field.

ConsThe primary downsides of working for Rockwell Collins is the location and the plodding pace of the avionics industry.
