Constantly declining benefits.

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Cedar Rapids, IA

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 10 years

ProsDiverse customer base helps in bad times keeping people employed. Lots of areas to move around to find the right fit.

Consthe company is being destroyed by HR. our benefits are falling all the time because the company is always trying to improve short term numbers. they are upsetting a lot of employees with changes like eliminating job bands, cutting vacation carryovers, reducing 401K match. these only result in short term bottom line improvements but are increasing the rate of employees leaving.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit treating the employees like numbers and quit expecting to retain or attract top talent with "average" benefits. RC was built with talented employees drawn by above average benefits and will be reduced to average with the moves made in the last 10 years.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Female employees aren't treated the same as male employees.

Engineer (Current Employee)
Cedar Rapids, IA

I have been working at Rockwell Collins for more than 3 years

ProsGreat people, the schools in the Cedar Rapids area are great, good benefits, an onsite recreation center, pharmacy and company owned day-care center.

ConsOverworked due to always being short staffed, a few nice buildings but the majority are poor to fair, management states they want to practice lean, but don't seem to implement any lean suggestions from employees. Male employees are treated much better than female employees, in regards to pay and job advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe young people coming out of college today will not put up with what your 40 and 50 something employees have done. They expect more and will not stick around long if they don't get it. To keep the most talented young people you need to be more competitive.

Great Avionics company

Principal Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Richardson, TX

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 8 years

ProsSometimes you get to do real engineering. Great location in Cedar Rapids for raising a family.

ConsVery slow to adapt new technology. Very risk adverse due to the nature of the business but not fun for new college grads as it will bring them back a dozen years or so in technology. Not really Rockwell's fault but more the FAA and the avionics biz

Advice to Senior ManagementThis used to be an engineering company and now it's ran by PMs. Only PMs get promoted and there is very limited growth for engineers unless you move into management. No real "chief" engineers and no Fellow program.

Corporate employment, even to a fault

Trip Support (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 5 years

ProsDiverse working environment, fair benefits offered, and multiple abilities for advancement if an engineer.

ConsSlow in terms of pay raises, if you're in certain fields or branches you will have a hard time advancing.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a hard look at talent retention, refocus attention on customer satisfaction than overall revenue.

Rockwell Collins

SATCOM Specialist (Former Employee)
Duluth, GA

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than a year

ProsLarge Company with many opportunities for different positions.

ConsIt is a large company which forces them to hire many unqualified employees with little to no work ethic.

Poor leadership

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Melbourne, FL

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThis company is a leader in avionics. It has a wealth of knowledge as well as very capable engineers working here. The avionics are high quality and reliable.

ConsProjects are poorly managed and bid. It would seem that when every project slips schedule and runs over budget that the bidding process needs revision. Poor planning becomes the burden of the employee.

The review system is set up to be easy to rate employees down, not up. The common theme was a person's 'perception' rather than work output. You can see this radiating from upper management in the Melbourne location.

~3% raise is the norm.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on positive reinforcement of your employees rather than breathing down their neck asking daily when they will be done. A simple 'thank you,' or 'good job,' goes a long way toward not creating such a negative environment.

Create realistic project deadlines and quit allowing scope creep every time a customer bats an eye.

Great company products, good people, good headquarters

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Rockwell Collins for more than 8 years

ProsGood product. Good diversity. Good locations.

ConsCommunication between leaders and employee in some areas very good...in others..abysmal.
Ideas of employees are squelched in the non-engineering areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll the surveys hired done will not replace open communication. Building trust everyday must start with leaders and those in immediate line of supervision. Open communcation is championed, but does not happen in practice. There are reasons people are leaving the company. Find out. Mid level managers are pressured to make unrealistic numbers, and they don't credit the solutions to the people who really figure out the solutions.

Good Benefits, Ok People, Bad work-life balance

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Cedar Rapids, IA

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than a year

ProsGood Benefits: 401k match, vacation, winter shutdown between christmas and new years, excellent bonus structure.

ConsA bigger company with some people that needed to be fired but just get shuffled around instead. Was expected to work more than 40 hours/week on a regular basis without overtime pay, although bonus checks were awarded in special cases.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the people you don't want instead of pawning them off on another group.

Was a great career until Dogbert consultation took over

Flight Systems Control Engineer (Former Employee)
Cedar Rapids, IA

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 10 years

ProsOnce the puppet strings from Rockwell International were removed, company was allowed to acquire growth entities.
Marketing has done a great job of new airframes, and update to existing airframes.
The company is extremely proactive with diversity, both ethnic, and gender. It is correcting years of not promoting women in the company.
Lots of design work. New hires are not relegated to collateral support for their first 5 years, as it was in the past.

ConsCompany has evolved to mentality that all levels of management do not require years of avionics domain design intellectual property. This is good because finding this talent that will relocate to a corn field in Iowa is not possible.
The Cedar Rapids location is a one horse town. Career options are always to relocate elsewhere in the country.

Advice to Senior ManagementDomain knowledge of avionics needs be the most important skill to find for all levels of engineering design development.

Content to be a fast follower, RC won't be first, but smaller, better engineered...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood infrastructure support. Strong processes for everything. Lean culture. Great place to go if you want to homestead in an engineering company. Strong set of talented engineers.

ConsLost the entrepreneurial spirit that gave birth to the company. Has NO consulting or engineering services division to offer to its customers. Just a products company. Very little motivation to leave IOWA, hence, very insular cloistered environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak out of Iowa (metaphorically and literally); be where the action is. Get more forward facing engineers interacting with customers, rather than just managers.
