I have been working at Rockwell Collins

    Pros

Very advanced technology company. Well run, good c-level execs. Opportunities are there to be had if you extend yourself and show initiative.

    Cons

Medical Benefits are not the best. Very high deductible plan that forces most costs to be borne by the employee. Could be due to the "Cadillac tax" that the government has imposed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restore benefits, medical and/or 401k match percentage. Lacking that allow for 4 weeks vacation at 10 or 15 years tenure rather than current 20 years.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Rockwell is transforming its global IT infrastructure. After years of criticism the company has recently taken an innovative approach in its shared IT services. People are very nice and want to contribute to the overall success.

    Cons

Middle managers operate with a mindset of managing people vs managing talent. Managers tend to be political and approach projects with the intention of covering themselves vs operating in the world of possibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatten the organizational structure. Many middle managers and directors are not needed and often get in the way.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I feel very fortunate to work for Rockwell Collins. My leaders have always cared about me as a professional and a person. I get to do work that I enjoy and the company paid for my graduate degree. Having the holiday shut-down is the best!

    Cons

It is sometimes hard to get decisions made quickly and efficiently. Being in Cedar Rapids is a blessing and a curse. It can be hard to move people here, but for us it is a great place to live.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please keep up all the positive changes you are making in the company. Every word you speak and action you take has an impact on your people. Even if it is something insignificant to you it can be huge to someone in your organization. This works in both positive and negative ways.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins

    Pros

Tight knit group of engineers (within your division). Everyone works as a team to get the job done. Managers, in general, look out for their group and keeps them informed. Provides a career development roadmap

    Cons

Slightly stuck in old ways of engineering. Focus on Lean practices can distract from real issues hindering progress

I worked at Rockwell Collins as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of training and opportunities to learn new things.
    Excellent work-life balance.
Good benefits and 401k matching (even for interns).
    Supportive management.
    Good cafeteria.
    Lots of interest groups.

    Cons

    Terrible locations. (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
Very little vertical movement (management tends to be old men who stay forever).
    Dingy working environment, outdated, etc.
Commercial area nearby is lacking in restaurants and culture.
    Below average pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people to move into job functions more easily. I felt slightly stuck in one business unit and location. This is the reason I didn't come back, along with location.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The best reason is the flexibility of the positions. It is very easy to work around the company because the company is about providing avionics and software packages to the industry. So it's very easy to switch projects if you don't like it. Also, company is medium size which meant that it was easier to meet higher up management. As an intern, we met with the CEO on one of our intern meetings

    Cons

Cedar Rapids Iowa is a very nice city, but growing up from New York City, it was very boring.
