I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Reasonable work-life balance. My leaders have generally been very personable and supportive of my personal and career goals. Interesting work (if you love aviation).

    Cons

Pay bands are very wide (could possibly be a good thing if you're looking for a title more than pay). Pay is generally on the low side for software engineer positions in the (Washington DC/Northern VA) area, but a little closer to average for the aerospace industry as a whole. During the recession, some people got promoted, but then the pay for their promotion was retracted along with all raises that year. I can understand not giving raises, but promoting without a pay increase for several years isn't fair.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. People at the company are nice and helpful.

    Cons

Very stereotypical corporate. Beuracracy makes it hard to communicate throughout the company, and new ideas are shot down unless you have a business plan

    Advice to Management

Be more nurturing of new ideas and creativity to allow your employees to innovate better

    Pros

Competitive benefits, very flexible hours for engineers, good salary.

    Cons

A lot of processes. Sometimes are good, but at at times tend to hinder progress and efficiency. It seems like the company likes to stay very low risk, which means generally behind the rest of the world in terms of software tools available, workplace culture.

    Pros

Great people to work with, exciting challenges. There is a lot of opportunity for advancement both laterally and vertically. Opportunities for travel abundant. Great working relationships with other companies and countries as well.

    Cons

Very little reward or acknowledgement for achievements. There are times when deadlines are changed with very little notice and very little room for adjustment, however those are primarily customer driven. There is also a high turnover due to lay-offs, typically notified the day of.

    Pros

Good pay. Flexible hours / ability to work from home. Most managers seem to really care about employee morale. Many managers have experience in engineering. Tuition reimbursement available.

    Cons

There aren't any big cons to working here, though a few buildings could use a remodeling.

    Advice to Management

Flexible work hours and the ability to work from home are a great benefit that doesn't go unappreciated!

    Pros

Good Pay, Strong Mentoring program, and ability to move around and get promoted for high performers. They have made great strides since the new CEO took over in modernizing the facilities and tech capabilities for employees. They have implemented new HR policies that have reduced some of the barriers for moving around in the company also.

    Cons

Even though improving, some of the facilities are still worn down. The benefits are also not terrible, but not great. 401k used to match 75%, now it's 50%. Medical insurance has also taken a nose dive.

    Advice to Management

change your mindset and actually follow the new HR policies! Too often I still hear of management still following old guidelines! If you're going to manage a new generation of workers, you are going to have to adapt.

    Pros

People - helpful and encouraging, eager to help. Technology - State of the art avionics, integration and support, with expansion into new areas. Management - Excellent leadership and direction. Work - challenging and rewarding.

    Cons

All in all there isn't too much to say that is negative about the company. There is a lot of work to do with a significant amount of pending work possible, additional expertise will be required to address these new activities.

    Advice to Management

Senior management at RCC has developed a work environment that is conducive to supporting new ideas and designs while still driving superior productivity and results.
