I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Rockwell Collins is a great company to work for. It's senior leadership practices it's motto of "Building Trust Everyday" both within the company and with it's customers. The work is challenging and individuals wno perform well are appropriately compensated. The company invests in it's employees through it's internal training programs and encourages pursuit of higher education. The leadership I have had the pleasure of working under have consistently emphasized work/personal life balance and have supported me throughout my career.

    Cons

Cedar Rapids isn't for everyone. It is a wonderful town particularly for family oriented activities, but not be attractive for some younger employees looking for a more urban environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep on doing what you have been doing. You have a good recipe; don't change it unnecessarily. Maintain your values, they have been key to our success.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Exceptional CEO - Clay Jones is a charismatic, focused and driven leader
Strong financial position of the company
    Great work life balance

    Cons

    Iowa/Cedar Rapids centric culture
    Lacking in true Global Diversity

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If Rockwell Collins wants to become a global company, you should focus on building a globally diverse senior leadership structure. The focus of diversity at Collins appears to be based on skin color as opposed to building a true and exceptional workforce that has strong global work experiences. Company should look outside its walls to attract & retain senior leaders.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work hours, three weeks of vacation accrues from day 1, good benefit options at reasonable prices, 401k plan w/company match, health/dental/vision benefits from day 1, employees are accountable for their own success, high ethical standards.

    Cons

No more vacation until after 15 years of service, mid-level leaders don't follow through with actions and things fall through the cracks -- good plans don't always come to pass, can be high-stress as high performance is expected along with good quality, even when workers are newly trained in a new position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to spend the money to make changes suggested by employees, when it comes to quality and performance. Many improvements could be made to documentation and equipment, but we are told that it's not in the budget and it never gets done. Follow-up on lean/quality actions is lacking. Many projects are started and never finished or are re-prioritized. Some mid-level leaders are not properly trained in project management; the project doesn't proceed in the proper fashion and there's no follow-up, so employees end up falling back into old habits, actions never get completed and we end up "re-creating the wheel" every couple of years.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

High concentration of Industry experts and really smart engineers.
Great place for challenging design work - some really interesting technology and product development that makes a difference.
Opportunity to work with customers (and travel) internationally.

    Cons

I commute 30min so I can live in Iowa City for culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be careful with adjusting the overall benefits package. This place relies on attracting top junior engineers. I'm an outlier - most of the technical and business leadership started here in engineering.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Full of talented, passionate people. Lots of people have been there 10, 20+ years. I think everyone is there because they love what they do. A culture of excellence and improvement. Generous pay and benefits.

    Cons

As with any company in the aviation industry there is a lot of process. This is as it should be for the safety required. I'm rather type-A myself and don't mind it, but the amount of process is not for everyone.
