Possibly the most gratifying experience; possibly the most frustrating experience.

Machinist (Former Employee)
Indianapolis, IN

I worked at Rolls-Royce full-time for more than 8 years

ProsWorking with some of the brightest minds in the aerospace industry; Many opportunities to challenge yourself and make a difference. The benefits and wages are fantastic;

ConsWorking with a bloated UAW represented hourly workforce. Same old tired union distractions make it near impossible to get anything accomplished. As a highly skilled hourly machinist wanting to make a difference, it was very difficult to work with the company without being alienated and harassed.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue doing everything you can to bust this sluggish union-culture up. Understand that there are some fantastic hourly workers that really want to see the company perform. Those things said, STOP OUTSOURCING WORK from Indy!! You can't see the full scope of the problems you are creating by doing this. Indy is fully capable.

Rolls-Royce Energy Systems in Mount Vernon, OH

New Equipment Proposals (Former Employee)
Mount Vernon, OH

I worked at Rolls-Royce full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompetitive salaries with good benefits, Global business with worldwide customer base, part of a larger global technology-based business with a strong engineering function.

ConsCorporate processes developed for the UK-based aerospace business are frequently not applicable to the energy business with its customized products for oil and gas customers, Poor track record of cost reduction partially due to over-reliance on the aerospace supply chain for aircraft engines in low volume production, Too many free riders not held accountable for non-achievement of objectives.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe brave enough to develop and adopt processes applicable for the markets and customers you serve. Embrace product customization and make solid execution of it a positive competitive differentiator rather than fighting it and failing at it via standardization efforts that are ineffectual.

Energy division is working diligently to adopt current best operating practices in project management methodology.

Project Management Office (Current Employee)
Mount Vernon, OH

I have been working at Rolls-Royce full-time for more than 3 years

ProsHigher than average pay, great career growth opportunity in many industries across the globe, caring executives that want to help you succeed in your personal growth plan. Ok benefits.

ConsLarge corporation that has the usual cumbersome policies that make change slow. Individual sectors/divisions have tailored policies and information systems so finding correct information takes longer( company working to improve this and it has gotten much better over the last several years.

Advice to Senior ManagementShare divisional long-range plan at detailed level frequently with very refined and understandable message, Have project management metrics and tool use on every employees professional development plan to center the business around performance as this will take away the resistive pockets and highlight areas in the business that need raod blocks and bottlenecks removed.

ProsThere are managers that care about their people. If you find one of these managers, you will do well and have opportunities to advance.

ConsAs with most large global companies, it is hard to get buy-in to your process improvements because others believe they know best.
