I have been working at Rosetta Stone full-time

    Pros

This is an entrepreneurial environment with very exciting growth opportunities. The company produces industry leading language learning products, and has a very strong and enthusiastic customer base.

    Cons

Things are not as structured as they could be. You have to be very focused, and very good at prioritization. Otherwise, you can be easily de-railed by random requests.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on a few core activities (and products). Do those things really well. Everything else is noise.

I have been working at Rosetta Stone full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

This company is full of people who get stuff done quickly, professionally and with minimum drama.
Leadership is the most rational I have encountered in my career.

    Cons

We are very distributed, so we have the pain of working remote with one another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep empowering your best leaders to maintain the safety and transparency that allows the creative fun behavior that both makes it fun to work here, and gives us the space to innovate.

    - I really believed in the product, and used it often (still do today)
    - My manager at the store level was excellent

    - Unrealistic goals were the same for all locations, regardless of demographics
    - Commission amounts were constantly being cut, and sales required to get any commissions constantly increasing
    - Not allowed to create marketing ideas for individual locations, and no response to local ideas from corporate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The product is great, the employees are generally passionate about learning an cultures, so listen to them.

I have been working at Rosetta Stone

    Pros

Work environment is helpful and understanding while keeping the company's interests in mind. They truly know and appreciate that people are what make the company. It is also understanding for extreme and difficult situations in lives. And while there are times when you have to work hard, there are times you get to play hard. Just a generally fun company to work for with great possibilities.

    Cons

I have been with the company a few years, and the health benefits are not nearly as good as they were when I started. They are definitely not the worst I have ever had. I must have gotten spoiled with how great they were when I got here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know benefits are a cost to the company, but they also motivate the employees. And some of your employees need it more than others. Extremely good and affordable benefits would be excellent. Like we had 4 or so years ago. And maybe, just maybe, be a model for other businesses. Shave a few percent off the high execs salaries and give a bigger piece of the pie to the employees. That would give some LONG term people who care.

I have been working at Rosetta Stone

    Pros

The office is convenient for me and I enjoy seeing my co-workers. Support from my co-workers and management is helpful and inspiring.

    Cons

Communication can be improved to instill greater company wide connection to each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to promote inter and intra office communication - including remote employees.

    Pros

Growth Potential, Professional Team, Travel, Networking, Salary, Remote Work Options. Flexibility.

    Cons

Unease with many layoff's in our past history. Departments don't know what other departments are doing and there is not a team which centralizes communications/documents etc. Some teams are less organized and professional than others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing yearly, bi-yearly questionnaires. Commit to do a few things well.

I have been working at Rosetta Stone

    Pros

Rosetta Stone has always attracted the best kind of people. I get along extremely well with the vast majority of my co-workers. I began my career here 4 years ago and have held 4 different positions demonstrating a) the type of change that you should expect, but also b) the career development opportunities within. Strong work-life balance is encouraged.

    Cons

Communication (upward and interdepartmental) tends to be a weakness. Don't offer great perks, professional development opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Demonstrate stronger value for your employees' opinions and career paths.

I have been working at Rosetta Stone full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people and culture here are really great. There are lots of young people in the office, and it's very laid back. I wear jeans to work everyday. My manager is flexible about my vacation and generally very accommodating. Also, I have found that the pay here is very good, esp compared to other companies in the DC area. I have a great work/life balance as well.

    Cons

There is a resistance to change. Even when something doesn't work, the CEO and CFO don't want to change things up. I get stuck doing busy work, and don't feel like I'm adding value. Even though I've brought this up with my manager, things have not changed. I don't feel like I'm growing enough in my career here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Get candid responses and take action. When things don't work, try something else.

I have been working at Rosetta Stone

    Pros

Teach from home (huge benefit through winters), flexible regarding scheduling & time off.

    Cons

Leadership does not listen to teachers regarding shaping the curriculum; often times leads to the feeling of selling snake-oil; little pay for language tuition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bump in teacher's pay, offer more regular/daytime hours

I have been working at Rosetta Stone

    Pros

Rosetta Stone is an interesting company with cool products and is undertaking a serious effort to become a general learning company, nit just a language learning company. The company has offices all around the world and the Boulder office where I work is an excellent work environment. Being a software engineer, I just need to be provided with a fast Mac, a fast network, coffee and snacks. Rosetta Stone provides all of these and the people in the Boulder office are fun, friendly, and helpful. Definitely a good gig.

    Cons

Working on distributed Agile teams is a bit of a problem, but we are are trying out some new Agile approaches (SAFE) so the company is trying to get teams as highly functioning as possible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become a truly agile workplace, challenging, bit it will be well worth the effort.
