I worked at Ross Stores part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Ross, as a company, is not bad. Despite their lower pay, they are flexible and the managers I had were good people. I have nothing bad to say, aside from the pay.

    Cons

Customers! The store that I was working had a huge influx of upper class Mexicans who would spend hundreds (or sometimes thousands) of dollars at a time, and thus slowing us down. Hey, employees get timed on their transactions. The worst customers? Military personnel! One woman had the nerve to tell me I shouldn't had to charge them sales tax because she was a "Marine". I imagined she was a marine creature due to her size, but she kept saying how she's a Marine and all that and because of that I couldn't charge her tax.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-This one is to the CEO: pay a bit more, please.
-Managers, if customers are insulting employees...do not side with the customer and refuse service.

I worked at Ross Stores full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    There is room for advancement.

    Cons

There were three new streore managers in one year and two district managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When new store managers are hired and several good employees leave, you might want to find out why. Additionally, when registers are consistently short, you might want to check out what's going on in the cash office as well as the cashier.

Decent experience, but low compensation and other factors caused me to look other places for full time employment.

I worked at Ross Stores as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Provided experience with managing and working within teams. They were accommodating with work/life balance and let us have requested days off most of the time. If you enjoy working for them and are interested in moving up in the company, they will help you. Teach you the different responsibilities of being an assistant manager.

    Cons

The experience is in retail and if you haven't worked in retail before, you might want to reconsider as it can be frustrating work. I had experience in the retail industry as an associate and did not enjoy my time at the company. I thought as a manager it might be better, however I did not enjoy it much more. The level of training and attention you get as an intern is greatly dependent on the store you are placed in. The store I interned at was also a training store and was often hectic and some of my training kept getting pushed back and was never completed. Because of Ross' business model and low prices, the compensation for management is low. Many of the customers were extremely rude and treated employees including management with little respect, which proved to be rather frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increasing compensation for management, especially those with business school qualifications and experience. Ensure that all interns are getting similar treatment and training. Some interns I knew never closed down the store and worked 7-5 Monday-Friday while others worked all different types of shifts and even on some holidays.

I worked at Ross Stores full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

45 hour work week for salaried managers. 20 percent discount everyday. 40 percent discount quarterly! The stock is light compared to other retailers who sit on a lot of freight. Everything must be processed and put out daily, carryover is not tolerated.

    Cons

Too much politics going on. If you have been in the company over 7 years, look out, you might be replaced. Also if you are promoted from the inside, you are not going much of an increase in pay which is sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company has done a fairly decent job in valuing the associates but can improve on Valuing their managers. Also
when promoting from within, give management the same compensation that you would offer an external hire.
