    Pros

The people you meet can be amazing. World travel. Unique Experiences. Laid back working culture. It's great when you're young!

    Cons

Tiny cabins. Roommates. Safety drills and procedures. Food. Countless little annoyances and restrictions. Little things like shipping / receiving supplies for the job are a nightmare. Have to mostly pay for internet access. Hard to communicate with outside world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay has not increased for AV positions for almost 20 years.

I worked at Royal Caribbean Cruises as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good company profile, lots to learn, good human resource department, multinational crew, social life rocks, no discrimination, constant trainings to develop oneself.

    Cons

Low salary, slow growth, you need to know someone high up to climb the ladder to success, tough for mid level managers as the human resources is used as a tool by non performers to not do their job properly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Depending upon ship to ship, the work place environment changes. Different ships in the same company have diffent work place environments.

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Miramar, FL

I have been working at Royal Caribbean Cruises as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

I was a contract Software Engineer at the Miramar IT building. Contractors are treated fairly. Pay is ok. There's always something to do. At times too much and at times not enough. It's a culturally diverse environment. You can hear several languages being spoken walking down the hall. There is some freedom, but... (see cons)

    Cons

...there are many constraints. Naturally, since this is a large company, there must be procedures, but still. There seems to be a general lack of trust of contractors and especially third party vendors. Yet, many people that work here are contractors. There are employee benefits you may often hear about but practically all don't apply for contractors.

There is a real us (IT) vs them (business) environment that doesn't help. It seems like the business and IT often don't trust each other. For example, the business side goes and hires a vendor to redevelop some system without really consulting with IT. Naturally, IT management may get defensive when they are involved after the fact and have to support the new technology developed by the vendor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more direct employees and less contractors. Understand it may not be best for the bottom line in the short term, but it will be best for morale and the bottom line in the long term. Don't let the Street rule you. You are making billions.

If you want to have top level IT talent, you need to have top level perks and benefits.

    Treat your contractors well.

Work on the business vs IT relationship. Involve the other party as early in the decision making process as possible. Trust each other.

    Be candid and tactful.

I have been working at Royal Caribbean Cruises full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great way to save money, see the world and make life long friends, having long vacations to travel or relax. You have to be ready to work very hard and party just as hard.

    Cons

Food can be a little boring the same each week on the same day, so you can sometimes tell what day it is by the food your eating, long hours with no day off during your contract, but you know all this before you join,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some people are promoted because they are in the right place at the right time, and have been with the company the longest, this is not always the best choice!!
