    I worked at Royal Mail

    Pros

Overall, for a non-graduate this would serve as a base to acquire some work experience. The basic pay package is better than most firms in the UK, which explains why many foreigners start-up with this company.

    Cons

Conversely, for graduates of non-UK institutions who generally find themselves working here, feel and are 'trapped' in the environment which is a 'dead' end job situation for them.

I worked at Royal Mail full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Team spirit amongst regular teams if allowed to work together which in turn ensured the job was completed efficiently.

Flexibility on hours and plenty of overtime if so desired.

    Cons

Poor health and safety, even when pointed out to managers nothing was ever done.

Calibre of the temps used from external agencies,Manpower and HRGo left a lot to be desired, are these people even vetted before being let loose on customers mail!!!!.
They make sustantial mistakes in sorting and even when reported nothing gets done.

Having graduate trainee managers run work areas is a disaster as although theyre only doing their job, more often than not they didnt have a clue about procedures and had to be told the correct way of doing things, which obviously they didnt like but had to take on board to get through the workload.

In the nwpsc the rather cliquey group of managers who clearly had their little gang and would let them get away with doing no work for the whole shift whilst standing around talking all day!!!.

Many cages and yorks with items/packets still waiting to be sorted over a week after the customer posted and had been collected eg dated 12th Dec still sitting their upto the 19th Dec,no wonder customers complain about non receipy/late delivery with non processing like this!!!

Over 90 yorks of international for multiple countries still sitting their on christmas eve morning waiting to be despatched, clearly not going to arive before xmas and judging by the items most were probably gifts for relatives, friends etc, etc.

Belittleing attitude towards the temps who did work hard and far too many managers all of different levels and colours of hi-viz who seemed to just wing it and were mostly clueless about an effective and productive way to actually manage people!!.

Managers openly boasting about the rates of pay they were on when a lot of people working ar middleton nwpsc were on the breadline and probably lived hand to mouth, not very professional to have them hear this sort of thing from so called "leaders" !!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the ivory towers more, work on the floor with the people who make the organisation turn and most importantly, try listening to your staff and customers more.

I have been working at Royal Mail as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

You get paid well that is all

    Cons

Awful company. Full of contractors not knowing what they are doing, people at the top pretend they know what they are doing and make you feel stupid in the meantime, everyone is out to hang you, no opportunity to show your personable side - strange as in Recruitment that's a main contributing factor. A bunch of absolute highly paid con-artists who are conning the public and conning all potential buyers, they lie on their figures and lie to their staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to Management would be 'Leave!', and let someone who actually wants to save the public money take over and not spend the profit personally

I worked at Royal Mail part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best thing is the possible early finishes. Though these are slowly dwindling as more and more people are given more work to fill up there time for being efficient.

    Cons

Delays in receiving the mail. Managers who act like they have your best interests in mind but are only trying to save their own skin. Some rounds that are just too big, others that are too small and managers that have no idea of how the rounds are. Inefficient sorting methods for mail at delivery offices. Poor work clothing. Why is there not some sort of breathable fabric (like climacool) for the summer?

Money good for jobs but nothing else.

I have been working at Royal Mail full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are not many. The pay is good for what it is and it's nice to get out of the office, managing your own time and meeting all sorts of people. Camaraderie between staff is good. It keeps you fit.

    Cons

No promotion opportunities, most front line managers are overpaid, unqualified supervisors who constantly use threatening/bullying tactics and lie to staff to get them to work overtime, treated with contempt if you phone in sick.

Temporary part timers are used and abused regularly, pressured into doing more than they should with the constant threat of no contract renewal in a few months time. Family friendly seems to be a myth as parents are penalised if their children are ill. I could go on...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have witnessed line managers who fraudulently pay themselves overtime, disgusting bully boy behaviour towards employees, and a couldn't care less attitude towards health and safety. There are no opportunities for personal growth and the constant drive for efficiency should now be focused on management of all levels.

    Cons

Terrible senior leadership. Poor leadership. Little strategy. No career development. I found this to be quite a sexist environment.
