Current Employee - Postman in Diss, England (UK)

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - good pay
    - well looked after, pension scheme, sick pay, up to 6 weeks paid annual leave and CWU union backing.
    - overtime always available for extra cash.
    - your essentially your own boss once you have started your round.
    - you spend the majority of time working outside so your not stuck in a hot sweaty environment all day.
    - generally a good atmosphere in the delivery office and friendly banter.

    Cons

    - some rounds are really small and some are huge.
    - working outside in horrible weather can be a pain.
    - sometimes bosses and managers will send you out on a round you haven't been trained on which is unfair, usually you will need atleast 1 day training on a town round and atleast 3 on a rural.
    - bosses and managers have no idea how hard it can be at times and make you feel stupid.
    - some customers are hard to deal with and will moan at you for being late or find something to complain about. (However a lot of customers are really friendly).
    - seniority takes place over juniority for annual leave and the choice of rounds.
    - days can be very long when parcels and mail are heavy but you are entitled to finish on time and arnt forced to work overtime.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Bosses and managers should test how long rounds take for themselves on a busy day Wednesday or Thursday.
    - get rid of the dead wood that work there and moan 24/7 and make the place miserable, they've never had another job and don't know how easy they have it.
    - make it easier for employees to progress in their career. Something as simple as offering a first aid course.

    Pros

easy job and great company as you make new friends easy

    Cons

    standing long periods off times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

dont get on at people that work and talk at the same time also it would be good if they let you pick where you wanted to worked as you end up doing the same place over and over again and it gets really boring.

    Pros

Working for Royal Mail is very beneficial in terms of learning new skills everyday. Own dedication and enthusiasm will bring the growth in career here.

    Cons

Royal mail is a national company and has a great network for their customers. As it has over 150,000 employees working for it from a very diverse cultures and traditions from different nations.
Down side of it is on number of occasions it has been found a lot of favourtisim in here. That is the reason it does not give a chance to everybody fairly to grow in their career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career Ladder should be always open for totally on the basis of competency & persons caliber.

Former Employee - Operations Manager in London, England (UK)

I worked at Royal Mail full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Front line roles well paid for non specialised roles in comparison to similar employers, opportunity to progress to management roles, trade union, good policies for employees.

    Cons

Constant reviews and downsizing means that all management roles especially those in operations are taking more and more responsibility for no extra pay, be willing to work at least 60 hours for 40 hours pay. recent reviews have even seen benefits pot removed and down grading, which has left staff and management disheartened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop breaking employment law by withdrawing peoples pay and benefits, company is losing its mix of experience and attracting new blood.

I have been working at Royal Mail full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great challenges at work if you know how to create opportunities and run with it. Big company so lots of areas where you could interesting projects to deliver value and develop your skill sets.

    Cons

Be prepared to be part of the old public sector mentality as it is a bit like old boys club. Be prepare to lobby with old veterans and movers& shakers at top if you wish to successfully progress your career internally; alternatively wait for them to offer you voluntary redundancy,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take some real action to improve diversity in workforce
