Pros
  • perks include sample sales but those really don't make up for the back breaking hours expected and demanded of staff (in 14 reviews)

    Pros

    - Some great, smart people work here - Gorgeous office (though no more snack closet) - Sample sales (usually once a month) - Bagel Fridays - Summer Fridays (get to leave at 3pm) - Casual dress code - Decent benefits package/paid time off

    Cons

    - The pay is a JOKE for the work expected (especially Merchandising/Production) - Management all around is absolutely a nightmare - Seriously, what does the HR department even do here? - If you are good at your job, expect to be overworked - Promotions aren't really based on performance... more on seniority, even if not deserving - Can be really cliquey, hard when you first start out - Systems are awful and really hinder your workflow - No one listens to the ideas/suggestions of the people whom the change would actually affect - Managers will use you as a scapegoat, and often - You might get verbally praised, but rarely given an actual raise/reward - HUGE HUGE turnover - and no surprise why.

    Advice to Management

    It really isn't that hard to treat the great employees better. Better hang on to them or they WILL find a better place to go.

    Pros

    Such a great brand, and creative people. Nice office space

    Cons

    Bad technology that hindered many creative ideas and UX experiences. Upper management finally got cleaned up but was a nightmare when I was there. Always chasing the next shinny object - no real roadmap/pan. HORRIBLE hr department that did not help employees at all

    Pros

    Rue has some of the smartest, most diligent people I've worked with. However, the current management seems disengaged. After they laid off the smart managers in like January, things got worse and the brand is just floundering.

    Cons

    A lot of the best talent walked out the door after the layoff in January. People who could have led the company into the future fled with a vengeance, and many who are left don't have the smarts and heart to drive the company forward. C-level management that wasn't laid off is dis-engaged, and it shows in the stuff that's now being sold on the site.

    Advice to Management

    Get back into it. The former CEO had his heart and soul in it and motivated people to be innovated and the brand to be beloved. You need to get back there, even if you're just prepping to sell it.

    Pros

    A great place to get a job after college or if you're senior management. The company does promote and gives you opportunity to move to different departments. The people that work there are great.

    Cons

    They are extremely low in terms of salary - across the board. And they demand you work more and get paid less and are very unwilling to reevaluate pay structures.

    Advice to Management

    Learn to keep the people there that want to be there by valuing them, or the turn over rate will continue to be a problem.

    Pros

    Hands-on experience in the studio lets you work with designer set samples/clothing (useful for someone who wants to learn or knows how to hem, steam cloths, style props, paint, etc). Get to know production/studio environment. Access to Rue sample sales...welcoming HQ and public company spaces.

    Cons

    The studio assisting contract gigs are in a nutshell, for someone used to this kind of freelance on-call work; dependent on the volume of work and can be as time-consuming as carrying heavy loads and painting or as quick as steaming a rack. On a normal day, slow. Don't expect a manager there to get new tasks lined up for you.

    Advice to Management

    It would boost morale and make contract studio assistants feel more useful and excited about work if they were given better direct management. Productivity and enthusiasm is reciprocated. Just from the perspective of a contractor.

    Pros

    Great people, "cool " office culture and some fun perks. Company name Looks good on a resume and will help you land that "next" ( better!!!) job!

    Cons

    No growth opportunity ! Back office management is "stuck". A group of "friends" that like to hear each other talk and are not open to new managers , promoting real talent or any new ideas. It's too bad because the company could be great if they could clear out the "cobwebs". DONT GET ME STARTED on what a JOKE the HR TEAM is!!! From their so called " Chief People Person!!!) Lol !!! To the most useless , unorganized team I have worked with in my 25 year career!!!

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of the old school click in back office !!! Stop hiring friend and when good talent comes thru the door -- try listening to them and maybe they will stick around --- get out of your own way and enough with the endless "Meetings" about "meetings" where you pat each other on back but nothing leaves the glass walk conference rooms and / or ever gets done!!!!

    not inclusive for temps/contractors not willing to pass on knowledge. I had to pry it out of my team

    Pros

    Lower to middle management works incredibly hard. the office culture can be fun because of the people. there is some training that HR team does and they do take their role fairly seriously. perks include sample sales but those really don't make up for the back breaking hours expected and demanded of staff. the best part of this company is the individuals doing the day in and day out work, the producers, the studio, the retouchers, the writers, the creative team, the IT team, the buyers, the planners, the shipping teams and DC.

    Cons

    Work-Life balance is completely off and unsupportive of private life, families, appointments, illnesses etc. the feeling is that no one cares and it really doesn't matter what occurs in you life Rue La La expects that it is your life. 12-15 hour workdays are the norm here and anything under gets you shunned by peers. weekend work is expected, constantly being on at all hours and answering every email is expected. Upper management is fairly delusional about how to grow and strategize and they still treat it as though it is a fledgling start up. they hurtle through and have high expectations, telling people what to do rather than being motivating leaders. They set these examples from senior management on down the line so all managers adopt this neurotic sense of flustered work and of caring very little for the employees and how to produce innovative work by being motivators rather than diminishers. it's really a shame because they have incredible staff but can't get their heads out of the sand to acknowledge, celebrate, and achieve. In addition there are substantiated rumors that HR and leadership asked current employees to give better ratings and for them to write glowing reviews here to up their status rather than actually doing something worthwhile to change it which is disappointing in itself.

    Advice to Management

    Be a leader not just a boss. you're draining your employees capabilities and energies by scare tactics, demands, and basic wearing down. Inspire your employees. Rue used to have key words to live by none of which were actually put into everyday use or practice starting with the senior management. You have opportunity, stop overworking and underutilizing

    Pros

    Some of the people are really great.

    Cons

    The company works at a sprint pace and with no time to breath. Everything is a disaster and everything is a urgent problem.

    Advice to Management

    My manager doesn't allow our department to adhere to the summer fridays (get to leave at 3 on fridays from memorial day to labor day)
