Tremendous Growth and Opportunity; CEO is a Visionary

    Director (Current Employee)

ProsRyan is a results-oriented firm which has experienced tremendous growth since its inception in 1991. I have been able to move up through the ranks fairly quickly, as my performance is reviewed according to the results I produce and is not based on tenure. This truly allows an individual to take his/her career into their own hands and get rewards commensurate with their contributions. Ryan is a fast-paced and challenging place to work; the environment allows constant opportunity for learning and professional growth. Also, Ryan provides certain benefits, such as free parking, a flexible work environment, and project bonuses, which are uncommon among similar firms and truly a testament to the value that the ownership group places on its employees.

ConsExpectations are very high at Ryan, sometimes unrealistically so. Additionally, the metric used to measure success is applied uniformly to disparate operations. This can lead to a spirit of defeatism at the management and staff levels, as certain individuals seem to be set up for success and others left to forge their own paths with much less support from the ownership group. Medical benefits are also quite expensive for the value received.

Advice to Senior Management1) Recognition: Teams who perform at 100% or higher of the myRyan measurement are not recognized. Also, teams who receive perfect client service scores without "sufficient" responders are not recognized. Management could do a better job of saying thank you to the nuts and bolts of the Firm, irrespective of the inevitable "top performers." It sends a message that meeting the Firm's very high expectations is not good enough. 2) Benchmarking: The one-size-fits-all benchmark does not set realistic and attainable goals for many teams within the Firm. Moreover, it undermines a manager's judgment when additional staff is needed to meet clients' needs, but a manager cannot act in a manner that he/she deems appropriate due to forecast/benchmark measurements. I advise that these measurements be revisited, taking into account the differences in practice areas and regional concerns. For example, some teams work primarily in states which allow sampling. In that case, the team will need to review approximately 2,000 sample invoices for a single engagement. In contrast, other teams work in detail review states, requiring them to review 8,000+ invoices for each engagement. When you consider the staff hours needed to complete a review for each team, the detail project will likely take 4 times as long to complete. However, these two teams are treated equally, or expected to produce the same monetary results with the same resources in the same amount of time, in accordance with the current measurement. Additionally, new consultants should be phased in, as their contributions do not become fully meaningful until at least year 2 and training these individuals takes away from the productivity of other employees.

    Positive Experience So Far

Senior Consultant, Sales and Use Tax (Current Employee)
    Sacramento, CA

ProsI like Ryan's values and mission. MyRyan, our flexible schedule has been a great success in my eyes as our team has utilized it to our benefit.

ConsThere does not seem to rules in terms of project assignment. More structure to project assignment would be advantageous.

    Fantastic work/life balance!

    Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsI love working for Ryan! I have never worked for a company that cares so much about making sure their employees are happy. The work environment is very friendly and relaxed while being motivational all at once. I have met some really amazing people during my time at Ryan. In addition, even some of the highest head honchos of the company are so approachable and easy to talk to. The biggest benefit of all is the work/life balance that is encouraged by Ryan. Having the flexibility to work around my life schedule makes me a great Mom, wife and employee! It is very refreshing to be able to do the things I need to do without having to feel guilty or receive any grief from management!

ConsRyan’s hiring process is painfully slow. I also feel that Ryan has lost some really great employees that were a product of not being on a revenue grossing team (not by any fault of their own). The catch 22 of myRyan is that sometimes it is hard to “turn off”. Some employees/managers get frustrated if you do not respond to things late at night or on the weekend. The utilization of myRyan is a choice. Some of us still work normal work hours and should not be expected to respond to things at 10pm on a Saturday just because that is what YOU decided to work.

ProsOur myRyan policy allows for complete work-life balance; guilt free environment.

ConsMore opportinites for support staff to join professional organizations outside our company with the intent of earning a designation.

Excellent Entry-level Alternative to Big Four

    Consultant (Current Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsThe work environment is extremely flexible. This firm proves that not all options for accounting grads require you enslave yourself to the office. Benefits, though not excessive in amount, are unique (gym membership reimbursement, cell phone allowance). Overall, there is a feeling that leadership values employees.

ConsMobility between positions seems limited. Pay is slightly lower than competitors, but matches the required work hours of the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue your actions that support your employees at all levels. Allow more mobility between practice areas.

    Great work/life balance

    Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsGreat opportunity for a high income for someone fresh out of school. Bonuses can be really big depending on which team and what projects your manager is able to get.

ConsThe biggest negative is if you end up on a low producing team and get small bonuses. You still have the chance to switch teams, but this can be difficult depending on your office location.
