STEER CLEAR!!

Freight Broker Inside Sales (Current Employee)

I have been working at Ryder System full-time for more than a year

ProsMaybe a good first job if you are young and not really interested in making a lot of money but want to try a corporate environment.

ConsDo not be FOOLED. This is a 6 man 3pl inside of a giant company. All of the talent has already left the building. Not one broker there over a year. This is a department that has not gotten off the ground in the 2 years it started and is not any part of Ryder's core business. It is run by a first time manager and a detached, egomaniac director. Beware, they are not set up to be a functioning department for anyone with a solid book of business and you will be sold a false bill of goods at the interview process. Be prepared to have no operational or managerial support. Make sure you ask what the top producers have made monthly over the past year (not even 10k/month). Ask to see the numbers!! You will not clear 60k in this atmosphere. Pay is a joke for any seasoned broker.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo back to the drawing board.

If working in IT is a nightmare

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Ryder System full-time for more than a year

Pros-Decent cheap food at headquarters
-Depending on your manager can work from home after a month or so

While it is hard to think of many in general the individual contributors and internal customers were generally friendly and easy to get along with.

Cons-Low pay compared to market
-High levels of stress
-Average technical knowledge of workforce is below average at all IT levels
-Over management of projects
-Management technical understanding extremely limited
-Very slow moving
-Unrealistic expectations for deadlines
-Limited opportunities for advancement
-Raises are very small compared to market
-General IT Resources are extremely limited
-Development resources are limited
-No centralized company source control
-Management uses fear mongering to motivate
-High Turnover

The IT Department at Ryder is toxic, the belligerent style of management that is used at the senior level results in high turnover, gross incompetence, sky rocking cost, and flailing systemic value. The department uses an ineffective traditional engineering methodology for IT solutions to implement technology of yesteryear. Resources are very limited, simple requests like acquiring a database for testing a solution takes weeks to fulfill if you do not know the right person to get around the official procedure.

Management is not willing to spend the money but still expect performance from IT personnel.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompletely gut the entire IT department of all management and start from scratch with people that understand the difference between a software developer and a network administrator.

Get rid of the developers and administrators who perform poorly and instead of hiring an army of incompetent developers hire a few very good developers, use self managed teams with an agile software development methodology to boost productivity. Also try to re-frame perspective on IT department in general, look at them to come up with creative solutions to reduce cost and increase revenue while still maintaining necessary enterprise systems.

If you Want To Put Your Career Into a Tailspin, Ryder Is Your Answer

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Ryder System full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIf you do not have a home or personal life, the demands of working long hours with zero recognition at Ryder are perfect.

ConsRyder System, Inc.
This is the epitome of an organization where the only button on their control panel says “Self Destruct”. During the past 20+ years they have inundated themselves with inept employees at middle and upper-level management positions who have neither people nor leadership skills. The business is run like a child day care center where the focus is strictly on today, without regard to its’ non-existent one, three or five year plan. Imagine that; why plan for the future unless you realize you do not have one. Management has made Ryder completely insignificant in a marketplace founder Jim Ryder created. Ryder over the past six years has twice as many negative sales months as positive ones. There is zero customer focus at the top which constantly adds to the run-away list of ‘former customers’. When it comes to bringing in quality talent, there is always room for Ryder’s revolving-door HR group to add empty suits to its special interest employee pool. Anyone considering a career in this dysfunctional zoo better think long and hard before signing on. Take the time to track down a former employee and get the straight scoop.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart hiring quality employee and customer focused employees who have leadership skills

Horrible place to work at

Logistics Manager (Former Employee)
Pittsburg, CA

I worked at Ryder System full-time for more than a year

ProsNone that I can think of

ConsAs a salaried employee do not expect a raise just more hours, the drivers and union mechanics make more than managers. The maint mechanics are useless, horrible service, and attitude, they will bill you for items that are covered under guarantee maint contracts. They tell you it is one big family...what a lie the SMSand Rental have a budget as does Integrated logistics side lots of misbillings, it is every department for yourself. If your not making your #'s expect to get on the focus group and explain why your not making mone, the most common reason for not making the #'s they sign looser 3rd party contracts and expect the managers to work miracles. HR is a joke. Managers are treated poorly with no support and take the blame for everything...instaed of finding the root cause of issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the cannabalism that takes place between departments. Pay people well and increase what they make on an annual basis based on performance. Nothing like hearing about how much profit the company has made but nothing trickles to the employees in the form of money. Decrease the cost of benefits they go up every year. Eliminate so many conference calls and meetings so the managers have time to manage. Stop signing such looser contacts pull your pants up and learn to walk away from loosing propositions.

Never again

Class A Truck Driver (Current Employee)
Baltimore, MD

I have been working at Ryder System full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood people to work with but not work for
Great accounts
Good benefits

ConsPay sucks...no raise in 7 yrs
Upper management will stab you in the back in a heartbeat
No room to advance if your a driver...most managers could care less if you stay or go
when i started you seen drivers with 15-20 yrs not anymore...maybe 1-2 yrs
sad that they have let a great company go down the drain...might as well be working for JB or Schneider

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to start taking care of the drivers you have and maybe you could retain them longer than 1 year

Ryder is not a caring place...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Liverpool, NY

I have been working at Ryder System full-time for more than 8 years

ProsNone that I can think of.

ConsHealth insurance is expensive; employee pay share, deductibles, covered care is preventative only, not sick ... bring back an HMO!

Supervisors and managers need to pay more attention to their staff instead of bad mouthing them behind their backs, yelling at them, insulting and putting them down, swearing at them ... moral is bad, most employees there hate their jobs and only stay because of a failing workforce.

Undeserving managers get rewarded, even though they do nothing for their staff. What open door, it really is made of glass. Two-way glass!

Several employees are sick. Some are working past retirement. One often walks off the job, in anger, during the day, coming back the next. Several cause damage in the shop creating an unsafe work environment, repeatedly. Unequal overtime, it's a matter of favorites, not teamwork. Only one person works on call every night, while also working during the day. Mechanics are not given the chance to advance; no promotions, no raises, no transfers. Manager is late every day, usually unreachable. Mechanics clock in and sit around drinking coffee.

I could go on.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo right by your employees, all of them, on all shifts, or replace current shop management with someone who knows what they're doing, cares, doesn't bully, and doesn't make everyone hate their job.

A bad place to work unless you are incompetent but a great self-promoter (you may thrive)

Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Ryder System full-time

Pros- A Fortune 500 company (well, in the 401-500 range)

Cons- Career progression is not linked to ability or effort. Talented and hard working people may get stuck at the same level while the least intelligent and the least capable are often promoted (not all the time - there are also some very smart and talented people, especially at the highest levels).

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management should attempt to instill a culture where the most talented employees are identified, developed and promoted. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a smart person to recognize another one so this may not happen.
