I have been working at SCANA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The area is really family friendly, and so is the company. If you liked the military, and the culture in the military, this is the company for you.

    Cons

There are a lot of "good ole boys" who really do not have much experience managing large projects, or much of any experience outside the company. The company really has a hard time creating and managing schedules, and this leads to mass miscommunication to everyone, do to management creating unrealistic expectations. The company has really brought in some high caliber people because of the closures of other plants around the country, and they all came here because they heard how great the company culture was. Unless the company pays more(which they can't because of their size), there will be a mass exodes of people, and it will only continue throughout the years. With several other AP1000s going in around the world, many people in all departments at SCANA, are waiting to get experience and then leave to go to another company when they start construction of their own AP1000.

    Advice to Management

Unit 1 has great culture, because of their great communication. Everyone is tired of the management pumping sunshine, and telling stories about how great it was doing new construction in the 80s. Also telling everyone to suck it up for minimal pay is worthless, as many could have stayed in the navy for that.

    Pros

Great location in the heart of Buckhead

    Cons

    Micro management in Marketing Department.

  3. A company with a lot of potential but too conservative for its own good

    Pros

Fairly solid and stable - few layoffs or personnel cuts

    Cons

Great stock placed on SACRED values but these are not followed in practice. Very difficult to advance into management unless you know someone higher up. Achievement is not rewarded and there is no pay for performance

    Advice to Management

Recognize that your people are your greatest asset and reward them accordingly

  5. Company could be promising with the right upper management team, Overall Good People

I worked at SCANA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits for currently employed employees. They cut the pension out last year, so no new hires from here on will be able to get a cash balance pension. They match 6% for 401k and you are immediately vested. Vacation is good and grows with time with the company.

    Cons

Inadequate upper level management, Must know someone to move up in the company, Not many vertical opportunities available, Company is strapped for cash with the construction of two new nuclear plants (which probably only 1 of which will be completed), Pay is below average at best unless you are in management, High population of baby boomers who will be retiring and putting financial stress on the company along with other challenges, New CEO is an accountant (Money guy) and makes most decisions solely on financials

    Advice to Management

Cut the fat at SCE&G to reduce unnecessary O&M, There is a habit of SCE&G having too many people on a job site or on a project, Care about your people (not just the bottom line), Don't risk the entire value of the company in the future on one project, Take care of your people and the competent ones will not jump ship, Update your approach to the job and get into the 21st century, Don't be afraid to spend money on your people (It will more than pay for itself)

    Pros

    Share Price of common stock

    Cons

There was Zero Cons 4 years ago, Times are changing and so are my Benefits!

    Advice to Management

Keep the traditions of this company alive and stop Conforming to the modern Corporation. Put employees first. With the reduction in benefits comes the reduction of quality employees which compounds into future weakness in the company.

I worked at SCANA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable overall company, solid business to be in

    Cons

Corporate leadership did not supervise leaders in the Aiken operation to ensure they where operating in a professional, people-centric, and positive manner. Used people as tools with little concern for personal obligations like children. Would demand employees stay past scheduled hours with little or no notice regardless of parental obligations. Very clicky, only promoted on likability factor--not leadership skills.

    Advice to Management

Be involved with the day to day operations of the satellite. Use unscheduled visits and employee conversations to get a true look of the practices used by management. Ensure leaders have REAL development and proven skills and eliminate nepotism and favoritism.

    Pros

good pay on the whole for a company, benefits are good, most coworkers are good to be around and work with

    Cons

bad management in the customer support area want everyone to make adjustments and not clearly communicate what they are until they are ready to fire you then all the sudden they can sit and explain it to you. The Customer Service dept is the only poorly run department in the business, if you're seeking employment in other areas you should be okay!

    Advice to Management

Shake up the current customer service management, there are some bad apples in there that are ruining the atmosphere, and making it an unhappy place to work.

    Pros

Job security and benefits are the best things about this place. You don't have to worry about this place going anywhere since it's a utility and benefits are probably on par with every other major company in this area.

    Cons

There is no opportunity for advancement. They play politics with your career. If you want to advance in this company, it's probably better to get a higher level job somewhere else and then come back to SCANA. Lots of people have done it this way. It's not really a bad job as far as atmosphere. It can be laid back and the people are okay, but when you are young, trying to marry and start a family, the pockets can really begin to hurt a little when you can't get a promotion even after doing everything they ask of you and more. I even tried to apply for a higher level position within the company and was told I could not even get the advancement I wanted that way. HR said it was a "lateral move".

    Advice to Management

I would ask that they keep the politics out of the workplace. Don't say that it's a recession and there will be a salary/hiring/promotion freeze and then promote several of your best buds in the executive management level.
