    Company founded on one idea

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNice people to work with and a worth while technology in the field of education. There were some people with great idea's, some of which I hope we see in the future. Globally, it is a great brand in education and one that resonates with many people. Not everyone may know SMART technologies, but when you say you work for the SMART board company, most people have kids who have used it.

ConsCompany showed a lack of direction, mis management and stuck in the mud ways. Not sure what happened after the big shake up but the company seems to still be standing, smaller but likely better off.

    line lead

Line Lead (Former Employee) Anaheim, CA

ProsSmall company with light workload. Repeat jobs so not much in the way of surprises. Day shift, Monday through Friday. 8-5 with overtime on sixth day is common but on a volenteered basis for the most part.

ConsNo room for advancement and work became repetitive and boring after the few first month. Internal finger pointing when project does not go well.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk the floor more often.

getting better but needs a lot of work

    Technical (Former Employee)

ProsThey have one of the best technology for interactive displays when it works
one of the best software when it works
partner with Microsoft a big boost
Lync room system is good, not great

Consa lot of people in the company lack urgency
poor product development and quality testing
Buggy product that only gets fixed after it's released to public
    "frog in a well" mentality

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed some serious overhaul of the product development and testing.
    reduce manufacturing cost
Take your head out of your butt and start looking at the competition, it won't be long before customers realize SMART's focus is on revenue, not customer satisfaction.

At the front of a little-known market.

    Technical Support Specialist (Current Employee)

ProsColleagues are very nice. Easy product to showcase, learn, and troubleshoot. Slight tech edge with 60wi unit. Flexible products that work well with other technology. Impressive when showing the intended capabilities.

ConsDealing with constant product RMAs. Customers grow entitled due to extremely flexible warranty. Email threads get passed around alot, involving more workers than necessary. Little information resources in regards to creating advanced system setups.

As a fast growing company, I got exposure to the many technologies that the company used and produced.

Tech Support (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsBenefits were great. The summer co-op program which gives students opportunity to gain experience. Employees could choose, to an extent, what time they start work. This allowed for some work-life balance. Team members freely associated with each other.

ConsCulture suddenly changed from encouraging employee growth to oppression-like operations. Some benefits such as on-site medical consultation was taken away from employees. Successful managers are those that strive to please the higher ranks. Honesty and objective views are not welcome.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you focus on equipping your employees with tools necessary to do their jobs as well as provide them a less stressful work environment, they will be more productive.

Amazing opportunity hampered by poor planning and inefficiencies

    Technical Trainer (Former Employee)

    ProsExcellent tech
    Great co-workers
Wonderful partners and users, really into the boards and pedagogy.

    ConsPoorly managed departments
    Sycophancy rewarded rather than talent
Unrealistic ideas of work life balance
Communication up and down the chain of management not handled well.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a grip on your assets, your people are your ambassadors. Treat them better and they will evangelize about your products and services. It isn't rocket science.
Stop trying to maximize revenue and value for your shareholders and begin to recognise that your trainers are your front line customer facing word of mouth message delivery agents, keep them content, well trained, well rewarded and your sales strategy will follow as they will encourage your users to purchase more boxes and want more world class training.

Good company and great people, if you like change you will enjoy it here.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

    ProsGreat people.
    Change, something I enjoy.
Getting to work with a great product that makes a difference in schools and businesses around the globe.

ConsSlow to make decisions and get things accomplished.
At present time there is little upward mobility.
Need to do more for employees professional development.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your employees and recognize their efforts. Do away with annual appraisals, getting goals half or two thirds through the year then having appraisals is pointless.
